Does anyone have misophonia?

I’ve heard it called a number of things, linked to autism, hyperacusis, etc.

I have it. I hate the sound of people, some in particular, eating - not just how everyone hates nails down a blackboard kind of thing - but like a phobia, but instead of extreme fear I have extreme anger.

I will not entertain the idea of being in the same building as the person who triggers me the most - it’s had a huge impact on my life and has gotten increasingly worse.

There are a few other sounds too. But eating is the main one. Does anyone else have it?

yabu: pull yourself together
yanbu: you have heard of it, have it, or understand where I’m coming from

Yep, I have it, it's horrendous.

TwoFeralKids · 02/05/2025 06:34

My husband does. He uses white sounds generators although they don't always work.

No, but I have heard of it, how long have you had your diagnosis?

I haven’t been diagnosed - it’s actually not in the dsm and psychologists/ counsellors haven’t heard of it in my experience

I have it and it also makes me angry.... My list is endless, people talking and laughing loudly (some women's screechy voices). my phone ringing, workmen and radio 1, the tap dripping... the sound of colleagues droning on and on about some boring story. Mobiles on loudspeakers, children crying especially when they do that breath holding thing and you are waiting for the next almighty wail. Music in pubs.. I think it's an age thing - I just want some peace, I totally get you!

I’m the same , I don’t think it’s age
some people are just loud, inconsiderate and don’t know how to behave politely in public

VirgosNeedGoals · 02/05/2025 08:35

I have this and it's ruined my life. I fucking hate 95% of the human race because of it. I refuse to go anywhere including my work place without ear buds.

I have it a bit. It's wet slurpy mouth noises and tends to be just certain people. My dog does a licking thing. Someone on the train yesterday sat down breathing heavily and then it turned into lip smacking. And someone I know who used to take each individual crisp and crunch it in half loudly.

Your poor dog 😂

JorgyPorgy · 02/05/2025 08:41

AleaEim · 02/05/2025 00:27

Oh I can’t stand that either but never knew how to describe it.

I’ve always hated mouth sounds but since having my baby 4 months ago, I now also can’t stand my dogs making licking noises or the tip tapping sound of them on the wooden floors.

Poor doggo 🐶 😕

LolaLouise · 02/05/2025 09:17

I have it. Pretty bad, to the point i cant have a bubble bath or drink fizzy drinks as i can hear the popping. Chewing, humming, breathing too loudly, snoring, football matches or other sports where you can hear the crowd roaring, repetitive tapping of a foot, people clicking pens, the kids game controllers and keyboards, the kids when they were little kicking balls against walls or fences, people who stop outside my home and leave the car running, clocks that tick, music being played upstairs or next door when i can hear the bass or beat, toys that played the same tune over and over and over when the kids were little, theres 1000s more. But all the above make me irrationally angry and feel like my head is going to explode.

Diagnosed ADHD too. I live with a fan on next to me, and i watch everything with head phones and subtitles when others are in the house, or very quietly with subtitles on my own.

Carolynpig · 02/05/2025 09:23

Probably got it too but with me it’s incessant small dog yapping, it makes me absolutely rage. Mind you my husband is sick of the dog barking at the back of us too so perhaps our neighbour is just being a total pain.

youflaminggalah · 02/05/2025 10:59

I have it and at times it is the bane of my life. I remember being affected by it as early as ten years old. I get very disturbed by the sounds of whispering and soft speaking (so many TV shows nowadays do this!), kissing and yawning, especially when people do the ‘hrrr’ sound at the end. It’s more than mild irritation, it’s an intense feeling of panic and distress.

PassingStranger · 02/05/2025 16:27

Yes

MyBoysHaveDogsNames · 02/05/2025 16:31

I have it and someone in my office is just constantly eating. Don’t know how she fits so much in. Was on an induction the other day and someone ate a frigging apple in a tiny room! So loud! At home I put music on. At work I use earplugs. Social!

zingally · 02/05/2025 17:29

I have it, and it's definitely got worse over the years.
I remember as a child, feeling irritated by the sound of someone biting their nails near me. That little clip-clip sound just really got my goat, but that was it.
Now it's loads of things:
Audible swallowing.
People who sound "wet" when they talk, like they have a mouthful of saliva sloshing around in there. In a similar vein, people who stop talking mid-sentence to audibly swallow with a pained grimace. My best friend does it sometimes, and I love her dearly, but fucking stop it.
Sniffing.
Gulping or that sort of hiss noise people make when sucking down the last bit of a drink from a cup.
People eating crisps near me - but varies according to context. In the staffroom at work, absolutely fine. Sitting behind me on a train? I genuinely want to turn around and full-send punch you in the face.
Nail biting.
Knuckle cracking.
The sound of people kissing. I think it's tied into that "wet" mouth sounds category.

Catlover77 · 02/05/2025 17:35

Oganesson118 · 02/05/2025 01:58

I think I might. I struggle when there are several distinct "layers" of noise. It's fine out and about where it sort of becomes a "dull roar" as one of my old teachers was fond of saying but the other day, the TV was on relatively loud (for my liking), my daughter was talking and my husband was loading or unloading the dishwasher and honestly every clatter of the plates made me shudder.

I suffer badly with hearing multiple levels of noise. Also people tapping, babies crying/gurgling/laughing, most tv adverts. It has got worse as I’ve got older and I have to escape from the noise

crazeekat · 02/05/2025 17:47

I have this with folk eating beside me. However. It’s only certain people. Anyone what I call eating like a pig - noisy eaters who eat with their mouth open or chomp. I can’t eat it, I have to leave. Or someone half tasting something, like licking something then chomping their lips to taste it drives me fucking bonkers. It makes me so mad. Just eat the stupid thing. So there’s a few people I can’t bear to be around when they eat, and others who are really quiet and I don’t mind. It’s the noise.

crazeekat · 02/05/2025 17:49

Oh forgot the sniffing. Makes me sooooo mad. Work with two girls who constantly sniff. Literally seconds after sniffing they sniff again. It’s a habit they both have. It drives me crazy

Viviennemary · 02/05/2025 17:52

I don't like screechy noises or even loud music in pubs and elsewhere. Or lawnmower noise and some bird calls. Not keen on eating noises either. But don't think it's a phobia. House alarms going off are awful. I still hear them even when they stop. Horrendous.

SnoozingFox · 02/05/2025 17:54

I can't bear it when people crack their knuckles, it makes me ragey. As does the hell which is "clapping along" in time with the music like the audience does on Strictly.

doneandone · 02/05/2025 17:58

Yes I have it. I absolutely cannot stand to hear dh eating (it doesn't bother me if I'm eating though as I guess my noise blocks out his noise) I take myself off in to the other room, it's like his mouth is a megaphone as dc eating doesn't bother me. It makes me irrationally angry!

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/05/2025 18:02

Sorry (happy?!) to break the news to you all but it's something that's very easy to fix. At some time in your past you attached an emotion - annoyance at being woken/disturbed, disgust, anger, etc - and therefore you're on high alert for that trigger. A quick session or two with any decent hypnotherapist will break that link.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 02/05/2025 18:03

Ohh me too. No autism or that though.
Slurpy eating noises
Typing noise
Mass clapping
Women with high pitched squeaky voices
I feel irritated just thinking about them 😂

Fidgety31 · 02/05/2025 18:06

Yes. I cannot eat with anyone else . Not even my own children .
the sounds of some one eating fill me with absolute rage .
if I am at work or out someplace and someone eats - I have to move away .
I have in the past lost my temper at people for eating - biting into an apple for instance .

Drinking sounds are the same . Even an advert where the ice is being tipped into a glass is horrific for me to hear.

it definitely has got worse as I have got older too.

Itiswhysofew · 02/05/2025 18:52

There are sounds that affect me and can make me rage, yes; but I don't think mine's misophonia.

The sound of crunching snow sets my teeth on edge.

Whistling makes me cringe and sets my heart racing.

Loud sneezing makes me really angry.

What I call wholesome sounds like hot water from the kettle being poured into a cup or teapot, soup being poured, bloody annoy me.

It's all a bit weird really. Think I'm just an irritable individual Grin

PaintedPottery · 02/05/2025 19:06

Eating noises make me rage.

The noise of an idling bus at a bus stop makes me feel nauseated.

Motorbikes speeding up as they head towards the 60 zone in the 30 zone makes my jaw hurt. Or when they speed past when I’m in the car.

RobertaFirmino · 02/05/2025 19:13

I have it too, mouth noises inc. eating, certain voices, people singing along to the radio, the sound polystyrene packaging makes, flip flop noises - they are all painful. They really do hurt. I know that sounds odd.
