To think this isn't great for £55?

We ordered 20 cupcakes from a local cake shop for my child's 6th birthday to give to her friends at the end of the day at school. Paid when ordering (no images available or book to choose from and the staff member serving just told us to go online to look at examples on their social media profile, but we were in a queue and didn't even have WiFi). Picked them up today. I'm not going to complain and I'm sure they're going to taste nice but at £55 for 20 of these, were my expectations not reasonable?

They look fine. Made to order baked stuff is always expensive. You're mad to spend that for 6yos after school though. Bag of lollies will do next year.

CrickityCrickets · 01/05/2025 20:50

Ridiculous and they didn't even get her age right, they say 9, not 6. Ask for a refund.

OK thanks for posting about Lolas.. This is a great example of what I'd hoped to see/get to choose from before the woman who served us just told us to go online to see what they do (while we didn't have any wifi..): https://www.lolas.co.uk/products/assorted-classics-mini-cupcake-box?_gl=11264ka9_upMQ.._gaMTM2NTE3ODUyMS4xNzQ2MTI4MzY3_ga_2V2RNL1XXP*MTc0NjEyODM2NC4xLjAuMTc0NjEyODM2NC4wLjAuMA..

So.. i've read the replies and what i'm taking from this is "not great, they're ok" and in some parts of the country this is more than ok for the cost.

But lesson learned, never buy something like a cake you haven't seen - and next year I'll be baking the damn things.

Thanks all. this has been helpful - while i'm still disappointed, i feel slightly less stupid at what happened.

Honestly, I think your expectations were unrealistic for the price you paid.

The Lola's cupcakes are a lot more expensive. I don't think you have anything to complain about.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 01/05/2025 20:51

I mean what more were you expecting? I’m not sure what more could have been added. Gold leaf?

£55 for 20 seems a lot but they have to factor in overheads, ingredients etc so maybe not.

SallyWD · 01/05/2025 20:51

They look ok but no better than the beautiful cupcakes you can get at Waitrose. You could have got 3 boxes for just over £20. g.co/kgs/h9ZDELt

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 01/05/2025 20:51

Wow.
While not terrible, I made a batch today that look better, and I'm certainly not professional. I would expect better for £55. Hopefully they taste great!

HÆLTHEPAIN · 01/05/2025 20:51

Price wise they’re not bad but I know what you mean - they do seem a little amateur. I used to charge £20 for a dozen when I was learning and mine were generally better than that.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/05/2025 20:52

Crikey, I used to buy two dozen ready made fairy cakes, ice them, shove them in a paper case and bung stickers on! Probably never cost more than a fiver, admittedly 20 years ago. Alternatively, a big bag of minis or those little packets of Haribos.

Those are 12 mini cupcakes for £2.25 each. You got full size for a similar price. I imagine if you'd have asked for bitesized cupcakes, your local bakery would have done them cheaper.

GreenSkyes · 01/05/2025 20:52

I think per cake, that breaks down cheaper than most people pay, certainly locally to me. DC friend said she paid £4.50 per cupcake for a class of 30!

People saying the ingredients are cheap etc. the shop need to factor on staff wages, bills, insurance and you're paying for the person's skill and ease.

Hope your little one has a lovely birthday.

Wheech · 01/05/2025 20:52

Whether I considered myself ripped off would be down to how they taste. If they've been made with decent ingredients eg butter not baking spread, and homemade buttercream made with butter, then I'd be happy. If they've been made with shit ingredients and premade icing and basically taste like they've been bought from Tesocs, then I'd be pissed off.

I agree with @notwavingbutsinking . You can buy ones that look not a million miles from these from Aldi for buttons and could stick a few extra decorations on top. The difference is hopefully the taste and decent ingredients.

Why does everything need to be ‘shoved’ and ‘bunged in’ these days. What happened to ‘put’?

You’re downplaying your effort for some reason.

Moonnstars · 01/05/2025 20:54

£2.75 for a cupcake sounds reasonable and is the price you would pay locally if buying off a market stall for something of a similar quality. There are better shops near me, but they again would be a higher cost.
Going to a bakery is always going to be pricey, especially compared to a supermarket, because of the labour costs. Just think about the time it would take to bake the cakes, the staff member to do it, the costs of having the oven on and so on.
I don't know why you would pay for fancy cupcakes for a child's birthday party though. I am not sure if you have hosted one before but there is a good chance some will end up in the floor, some will take one bite and leave it and others might just lick the icing off.

Also just noticed you want to hand them out at school - have you checked and got an ingredients list? There may be children with allergies that can't have one or the teacher/parents may need to see the ingredient list.

Holeypyjamas · 01/05/2025 20:55

Why is everyone trying to fill kids with excessive shit? It’s so extra.

Also, if you can afford £55 for cupcakes, you should get yourself some phone data.

Well, some people try to patronize local small businesses.

I think your cupcakes look fine,OP, but that is an ungodly amount of white flour and sugar for little kids. Maybe just a piece of chocolate next time.

Well I didn't bake the little buggers!

LizzieSiddal · 01/05/2025 20:58

They dont look very professional at all. I’d take off the 6s because they look dreadful!

BunnyLake · 01/05/2025 20:58

I looked up one a few miles from me who do 24 for £65.

Not mini though.

Or even these, £2.80 for 4. But they won’t be as nice bakery made.

They're not amazing but I'm sure the kids will love them. All we ever get is mini bags of Harribo!

StrawberrySquash · 01/05/2025 21:02

TBH the Fiona Cairns don't look that great in person. Hamdmade stuff is expensive and it shocks us because machine manufacture (and cheap foreign labour) make us not realise how much work actually goes into stuff.

Favouritefruits · 01/05/2025 21:03

Think the £6 Asda ones look just as good. I’d be a bit perfect off too!

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 01/05/2025 21:04

Lyannaa · 01/05/2025 20:46

I think they look nice. £55 is probably what I’d expect to pay. It costs about £90 for a handmade bespoke birthday cake these days (sometimes more).

Yes but these weren’t for a party, they were for handing out at the end of school.

The kids will have barely looked at them, just inhaled them.

Sounds like a school gate arms race TBH.
