To think this isn't great for £55?

We ordered 20 cupcakes from a local cake shop for my child's 6th birthday to give to her friends at the end of the day at school. Paid when ordering (no images available or book to choose from and the staff member serving just told us to go online to look at examples on their social media profile, but we were in a queue and didn't even have WiFi). Picked them up today. I'm not going to complain and I'm sure they're going to taste nice but at £55 for 20 of these, were my expectations not reasonable?

They looks fine to me for the price per cake I don't know what else you would be expecting?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 01/05/2025 20:29

Yeah, I'm sure they're tasty but they're pretty basic...I'm sure you could have baked them yourself for about a fiver!

MalcolmMoo · 01/05/2025 20:29

It’s there now. It’s hard to tell from the picture OP, to me they look like pretty standard cupcakes in a box. £2.75 a cake seems about right and what I pay for similar cupcakes round here. I think it’s just the going rate.

sprigatito · 01/05/2025 20:29

They do look a bit shite tbh. The numbering is clumsy and the sprinkles are meagre and boring. I’d be disappointed.

nomas · 01/05/2025 20:29

They look really nice. Where in the country are you? That looks fine £55 in my city.

Hesma · 01/05/2025 20:29

What did you expect at less than £3 per cupcake. Looks reasonable to me for such a cheap price

user1471538275 · 01/05/2025 20:30

They look better than many of the ones I looked at for the same price.

Annettecurtaintwitcher · 01/05/2025 20:30

I think they look fine! I would have just bought them from the supermarket though because I am cheap!

DownWithCremeEggs · 01/05/2025 20:30

They look fine to me.

RipleyJones · 01/05/2025 20:31

Understand your disappointment.. they look a bit basic and lacking in fine detail. Not much you can do about it now, but yes, they’re pretty average.

Gundogday · 01/05/2025 20:31

You can easily pay £1.50-£2.50 per cake in a shop, or more at a farmers market, so that dorsn’t sound too bad.

This. It's the cake equivalent of throwing a bucket of water over a car and charging someone for "washing" it.

SilverPicnicHead89 · 01/05/2025 20:31

I suppose i think they're a bit "basic" for a local shop multiple people have raved about. And the sloppy colouring on the number isn't great. we're in the middle of nowhere (rural) and this is a local shop in the nearest small town. i have no idea what Lola's is 😁

No it isn’t. She ordered decorated cupcakes and got them.

Theunamedcat · 01/05/2025 20:32

Honestly they do look a bit unprofessional the "6" ones do anyway if they had done them all with the sweets and sprinkles it woukd have looked more polished

The price is a little higher than I would have paid but not beyond the realms of possibility

Next time buy cheap fairycakes from Tesco they fit in the bags easier

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 01/05/2025 20:32

What were you expecting? Isn’t that £2.75 per cupcake? That's always going to be steep.

I thought most schools had banned birthday cake anyway, but I’m sure there are nice supermarket cupcakes that would have done the job.

Viviennemary · 01/05/2025 20:32

They look ok. But nothing very exciting. Can a cupcake be exciting. Very basic. Disappointing . Not worth £55.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 01/05/2025 20:33

They do look very basic and boring. I'd be upset too!

SilverPicnicHead89 · 01/05/2025 20:33

Size? Er, i haven't measured them. They're about 3 inches?

They look a bit shit to be honest. I can understand your disappointment but to your kiddo they will be fine. More sprinkle would have been nice but move on and make different choices next time

Heronwatcher · 01/05/2025 20:36

I think they look fine. That said why didn’t you just go to a shop and buy some? You do realise that most of the kids will just lick the icing off and then bin them?

Amiwrongamiright · 01/05/2025 20:36

Yeah they look fine but in a, they look like they cost £10 a box in the supermarket kind of way. I can understand your disappointment with spending £55 on them. I would expect cleaner lines with the number 6. Like it looks ok but something I could do and I’m not a professional.

I wouldn’t complain but I think, don’t hate me, you shouldn’t pay £55 on cakes you haven’t even seen photos of or examples of in future haha

Peacepleaselouise · 01/05/2025 20:37

In my area that would be on the cheaper end for bog standard ones - but that is why I buy them from aldi!

Birthday is a weekday and there aren't any shops near us, we have to drive to the next town over so my partner arranged to collect them the day before (driving there on the way back), because we can't get to any cake shops on the day
