Would you tell a child off / tell them not to say ‘ oh god ‘ or ‘ jeez ‘?

is this like swearing ?

I think my DD said Jeez once in front her aunty, who told her not to say it. She’s 5.

on my way home tonight I said ‘ oh god ‘ at a traffic situation and my kids repeated it.

and it made me think that I hope they don’t repeat it.

I have heard my other nephews and nieces ( from a different SIL ) say this and I didn’t think to correct them on it ( especially as their parents were there ).

I hadn’t really noticed my DD saying it a lot at all. But her aunt did pick up on it. Anyway then it made me think in the car today that I don’t want my kids saying it in case there are other people who think it’s bad for kids to say this kind of stuff. Of course I refrain from swearing but the occasional ‘ oh god ‘ or ‘ jeez ‘ slips out.

thoughts ?

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. A lot of small American kids say jeeze
My late father used to say "Christ on a bike".

HaddyAbrams · 30/04/2025 18:36

If they said it occasionally then probably not. My niece says "Oh my God" approximately every third sentence and it grates a bit. It's not swearing, but I don't really like it.

kwetu · 30/04/2025 18:36

Oh god and oh jeez can be offensive to someone religious for instance but in the scheme of things there’s a lot worse they could pick up on and repeat.

CopperWhite · 30/04/2025 18:37

If I was responsible for a child who said those things I’d tell them why it’s not nice and that it offends some people. If their parent was there I wouldn’t say anything.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2025 18:37

I told my children not to because it upsets some people. But I wouldn’t have told them off.

TwilightSkies · 30/04/2025 18:38

Doesn’t bother me at all. If people are offended by it, that’s THEIR issue.

haveyubin · 30/04/2025 18:39

Yeah so I think it’s nor necessary to correct a child in their parents presence if their parent hasn’t corrected them.

but SIL is religious, so that’s probably why she did that.

I wouldn't tell them off

Gymrabbit · 30/04/2025 18:40

You know those awful:
‘I was today years old when I realised’ posts.

well I was today years old when I realised that ‘oh Jeez’ was a reference to Jesus!

BobbyBiscuits · 30/04/2025 18:41

Well you can't have it that they're both offensive. Either you shouldn't use god's name in vain, so don't say 'oh god'. But do say 'jeez' because it's not an actual word that relates to god. In fact it's not a word at all. So can't be offensive as it's purely created to avoid being blasphemous?!

haveyubin · 30/04/2025 18:43

I don’t find either offensive at all. It’s not about me though, it’s about how my kids are coming across it they say it. SIL shouldn’t have corrected her in front of me but it did get me thinking.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 30/04/2025 18:43

I've told my kids not to blaspheme because if you're not religious why would you be invoking him at all, there's plenty of non offensive terms to use. I'm not religious and it does slip out some times but I don't want them to use it without thinking.

Topseyt123 · 30/04/2025 18:43

I wouldn't bother with it myself. I don't find either offensive and wouldn't tell any child off for using them

My Dad used to tell us not to use them as children, but we still did and all our friends did too. He wasn't even a particularly religious person.

Girasoli · 30/04/2025 18:44

I tell my kids to say "Oh gosh" instead...we're Catholic.
DS2 keeps singing the "Steve lava chicken is tasty as hell" song from the mine craft movie atm. I told him not to sing the he'll bit at school!

BumbleBeegu · 30/04/2025 18:45

It wouldn’t bother me really, but in my school we have to have a ‘quiet word’ with a child if they say either of these, as we are a Church School.

One of my lovely 7 year olds told me today (ever so innocently) that she ‘feels a bit crap’ 🤣🥴

Took great effort for me to explain that ‘a bit rubbish’ may be better to say in school. 😆 She explained that her mum says crap…and ‘is it swearing Miss Beegu 😳?’ Bless.

Gundogday · 30/04/2025 18:47

If it were my child, or in my care, I would have a quiet word.

purpleme12 · 30/04/2025 18:48

'oh jeez' isn't swearing
It's fine

'oh God ' the only people who are offended by this are really strict Christians. Most Christians aren't bothered. So it's rare you'll come across people who are bothered

I say 'oh God' so no I've never been bothered about my child saying it

CaramelGhost · 30/04/2025 18:50

I wouldn't tell my 12 year old off unless they were saying it at me/in response to something I have said. Same when they were younger. They get a telling off for "what the hell". Not sure what the difference is but it feels different 😃

meganorks · 30/04/2025 18:51

No, I wouldn't. Based on how popular the use of 'OMG!' is, I'd say you onto a losing battle!

Skirtless · 30/04/2025 18:55

haveyubin · 30/04/2025 18:39

Yeah so I think it’s nor necessary to correct a child in their parents presence if their parent hasn’t corrected them.

but SIL is religious, so that’s probably why she did that.

And she needs to find her own way to resolve her religious discomfort. Not make it someone else’s problem.

MissyB1 · 30/04/2025 18:55

I don't like hearing it from kids, makes them sound a bit rough in my opinion. Yes I will get flamed no doubt for being "judgemental" or "snobbish" but it makes me cringe when kids do it.

TheCurious0range · 30/04/2025 18:56

DS is 6 I've explained blasphemy and why some people are upset by it. He understood. He says gosh, crikey or more recently oh biscuits, no idea where that one is from but I can't see an issue with it. I also tell him words like stupid, idiot, bloody etc are rude, he just calls them swears and knows he shouldn't use them, he does have a tendency to pull his cousins on it....

purpleme12 · 30/04/2025 18:59

'biscuits' in this context is from Bluey

This.
It seems this day and age everyone will find some sort of offence in anything.
