I was in blackout and parents haven’t even texted me

I live in one of the countries where there was a power cut, it was frightening at the time and still feels a bit unsettling. My parents haven’t even WhatsApped us to see how we are (they still live in the U.K.)

Is this normal?

This is a bit harsh. People may not keep up to date with every country but they tend to keep up with the one their kids live in.

I totally agree with you and I get why OP is upset. But sometimes some news can genuinely be missed.

ThisLivelyRaven · 01/05/2025 20:35

Am I missing something, I thought it was a 12 ish hour power cut - was it something more serious?

sarcasm!??

Shotokan101 · 01/05/2025 20:55

It's a couple of days power outage not a bleedin' earthquake. YABU

SidekickSally · 01/05/2025 20:56

So your parents don’t seem to have kept up with the news. That’s all.

I find it interesting that at no point the OP ever had any concerns about the lack of contact from parents and why that may be. it was all about the OP.

Self absorbed from both sides!!

I've seen the news in the last few days and saw nothing about the black outs, had to Google after seeing this post, so I'm sure they were probably just unaware.

What news did you see? It was headline news on all major channels on Monday (when it happened) and Tuesday morning.

Bellie710 · 01/05/2025 19:53

Sorry if I don't have the same hysteria as everyone else about a blackout, we have gone 9 days with no power, internet or phone lines so 12 hours would not make me think I better check on them nor would it concern them in the slightest!

Was the entire nation you lived in, in blackout with all services out for 500 miles around? Did you have water? Was there radio? Did you know why the power was off? Yeah, I thought not 🙄

Most of the news I saw/heard/read was about the royal family, the pope, trans women, some crime stories that didn't catch my attention, traffic issues/road closures. I don't deliberately sit down to watch or listen to the news but I have been around it and had the radio on in the car this week, and I clicked on a couple of news websites following articles being shared.

MumTeacherofMany · 01/05/2025 21:32

To be fair I knew nothing about it OP... maybe they are the same

...and the cyberattack on M&S - now that did get a lot of people near me worried!

Edited grammar

Well, to be frank, I think that’s a damn shame.

There was a state of emergency. Would a “you ok? Seen in the news what’s happening!” Text been too too much of a stretch?

Honestly, this thread has destroyed my faith in human nature. It really has.

I couldn't agree more. I keep coming back to this thread out of some morbid fascination. And each time i do I I'm even more horrified by what I'm reading.

I'm truly shocked by the insular, uncaring attitudes from the majority of posters.

It's as depressing as it is unsettling..

I said WAY up the thread that if this is a microcosm of society, we're fucked & now i think we're REALLY fucked 😬😭

Hopealong · 01/05/2025 22:02

Live in Portugal. We lost power and water for about 12 hours. That in itself was not so bad but 2 hours in to the outage we lost all internet and mobile phones went to emergency calls only mode. Difficult to say exactly how it makes you feel, not frightened exactly but without being able to find out what is going on, you can't help but feel anxious.

Before we lost communication it was main breaking news item on BBC. No message from my Mother either but she has unfortunately become increasingly self absorbed in her eighties, so my expectations were not high.

I'm thinking of buying a battery operated radio!

crumblingschools · 01/05/2025 22:10

People saying they didn’t know about it are not really showing their high intelligence levels, it was all over the news

With the build up of cyber attacks it may be useful to keep an eye on the news

Perhaps we don't have high intelligence levels? Rumbled 🙄

Weird, because it was definitely headline news on all mainstream stations like BBC News.

crumblingschools · 01/05/2025 22:16

@Lifestooshort71 but why would posters proudly declare they knew nothing about it when it was all over the news

You've got me there. I suppose they skimmed it and latched on to topics more relevant to their lives? There seems to be so much global stuff going on atm that perhaps it was filed away as too exhausting to contemplate.

Thefsm · 01/05/2025 22:22

I would t expect anyone to check in on me over a power cut of less than a day u less I was on some kind of medical alert thing that required power. It never occurred to me to check on any of my friends in those places affected. We e lived without power for a week after a hurricane and nobody checked on us after the initial “is your house still standing”

Stopeatingcrispsanddips · 01/05/2025 22:31

The people who are STILL not getting it after it being explained to them several times are either completely on the wind up…or as thick as pig shit, it’s shocking

It really is shocking. I'm surprised at your parents not realising, especially if your dad watches the news a lot. It was all over the news and I would definitely expect them to have picked up on it and contacted you.

PaperSnowAGhost89 · 01/05/2025 22:57

That really is horrible, I'm sorry you still feel unsettled too. It's scary!
However, I definitely think it was a much bigger deal in the actual countries it happened in.
In the UK it has barely been reported at all. I only found out about it this afternoon. I keep an eye on current events and had heard nothing. Only one person in my work place was aware, and that was because a family member of hers was currently on holiday there. So in the kindest possible way, there's every chance they are completely unaware or are not aware of how much of an ordeal it has been for you or the severity of the situation.
Hope you're okay x

purplepie1 · 01/05/2025 23:08

I’m in the uk and the last one we had was 4 days. No one checked in with us.

Braygirlnow · 01/05/2025 23:12

Why not call and ask? Maybe they didn't realise how bad it was, judging by the posts on here they may not.
