To think that having a mammogram carried out by a man is preferable to a long wait for an appointment.

I know many people who wouldn't be here now without early detection of breast cancer due to the screening programme.
I have had a few myself.
It's not something I look forward to but it's a few minutes of discomfort that could save my life so I put up with it.
Given the choice I would prefer a woman carry it out as it is quite intrusive but as there is a shortage of female staff I would be ok with a male member of staff as long as there was a chaperone and Iwas told in advance.
If they do change the rules I think there should be a choice.

If you would rather die of breast cancer than have a qualified person perform a diagnostic procedure on you, you should sign a piece of paper to say that's your choice and get on with it.

NO NO NO
Women should be doing this job. Why are you setting up a completely needless either/or situation here? Women NEED a woman to do this job for us. FFS.

Most on the thread are okay with it being a man so that’s your personal opinion but don’t speak for everyone.

Indianajet · 29/04/2025 13:04

It amazes me that women who are making a huge song and dance about single sex toilets, can be so nasty about women who would be uncomfortable with males performing mammograms. It is fine to have different opinions, but there is no need to be so dismissive about other people's fears.

It is not a diagnostic procedure for most. It is a preventative health screening.
I was sexually assaulted by a GP at 18 years old. Thank you for being so understanding of why women might opt out of mammograms. Such empathy.

You are free to opt out, just accept the consequences of it and free up appointments for others.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 29/04/2025 13:10

Do you have any idea what background knowledge is required to do a mammogram and use radiation safely? A degree, years of postgrad experience amd further training. It isn't something a woman with a spare couple of hours a week can do
Don't you think the society of radiographers may have already explored this, but obviously it isn't tenable or they wouldn't have resorted to allowing males to do it

That isn’t what screening programmes are all about.

What happened to giving women a choice? Those who don’t mind being seen by men can be seen by men, and those who prefer to be seen by a woman get seen by a woman. Men are there to supplement female mammographers not replace them so there shouldn’t be any problem with accommodating everyone’s choice.
I don’t understand why you need to be unpleasant about this

I haven’t seen anyone on this thread being nasty towards women who don’t want men performing their mammograms. Most people have said women should be able to request women. It’s just that some of us would be fine with men, if needed - I don’t see how that view is nasty?

You probably wouldn’t say that if you got diagnosed wihh the breast cancer and the surgeon was male.

But that is different, male surgeons carry out swift examinations then any surgery is carried out while you are sedated and unaware, obviously.

Mammograms are fairly lengthy procedures.

We are stood topless while the hcp manhandles breasts into a riculous apparatus. The whole thing is painful and unpleasant so on top of that you don't want a bloke being the one squeezing and contorting breasts.

They need to overhaul the whole thing tbh. If men had to squeeze their cocks into clamps to be screened I'm sure someone would have developed a quicker and easier way.

If men had to have someone shove a finger up their butt to conduct a prostate exam I’m sure someone would have developed a more dignified way. Oh wait… 🧐

What brilliant ideas do you have for how an accurate x ray of a breast can be taken? Maybe you can send them to the NHS so they could implement them.

It is a choice - you can go or not go. Not being seen by a man won't magically make more female radiographers appear.

I can't imagine declining any medical procedure because of who is performing it, unless there are concerns about their qualifications.

Anyone considered men with breast cancer? Is it ok for their breasts to be handled by a female?

Oh I don't know it isn't as if technology isn't advancing rapidly. To have to squeeze breasts info a vice like apparatus seems rather archaic to say the least.

Sadly I'm not a tech expert , I am however suggesting thst those who are should have come up with a better system.

Men do not get routine breast screenings.
Many women like myself would put up with a lot more if we have cancer, than we would for a preventative screening.

Right. But my point is that there are many uncomfortable or undignified procedures including ones for men.

Honestly, no, they make up a tiny percentage of the breast cancer rates and don't have routine screening.

This is an issue overwhelmingly affecting women. It's absolutely OK to discuss that without considering a tiny percentage of men.

It is nothing like the other way round. Men don't care if they have tests on their 'breasts' as they aren't actually breasts like women's <obviously>. It is just tissue to them like having an arm xrayed.

There. Are. Female. Radiographers. Already. They will carry out the mammograms on women who want to see a female radiographer. Male radiographers will be in addition to the female ones, not instead of. There will be more radiographers so no one will need to choose not to go. So you don’t need to tell other women to put up with being seen by a male or die.

Your inability to imagine why someone would draw a different conclusion to you isn’t something I’d boast about but then we’re all different, aren’t we?

I know nothing about male breast cancer but I would hope that those who come forward are examined by men if that’s what they wish

SereneSquid · 29/04/2025 13:31

You don't have a choice in other services about seeing a woman. If you ask you get told no. I asked to see a female Dr when I was referred with a lump and was told no.
So I simply do not believe I will get a woman at screening. It looks like it will be agreed. At the moment there will be mainly women doing it, but if it is a man, I will just opt out.
