Bought a dishwasher from Argos and just filled in their customer satisfaction survey, giving them top marks throughout.

Then they asked me the question below. AIBU to find the wording offensive?

What is it, specifically, you are finding offensive ?

DontKnowHelpMe · 28/04/2025 14:51

"Do you have..."

bowsbunniesandbooks · 28/04/2025 14:51

Uhm, what wording exactly do you find offensive?

DontKnowHelpMe · 28/04/2025 14:51

ExtraOnions · 28/04/2025 14:50

Do you identify as...

Identifying as something doesn't mean you are or you have something.

MrsMitford3 · 28/04/2025 14:52

I am assuming you didn't like "do you identify as" versus just asking if you have one of the following condition.
As if it is choice?
I do agree it is awkwardly written.

Ihateslugs · 28/04/2025 14:52

I would not answer this question, I can’t see any reason to when buying a dishwasher! I assume it’s there to gather info about diversity but there are limits!

Northerngirl821 · 28/04/2025 14:52

It’s badly worded but “offensive” is a bit of an extreme response!

Burgerqueenbee · 28/04/2025 14:53

Is it not so they can ask further questions to make sure the website/ordering process was appropriately accessible if you have one of those issues?

MemorableTrenchcoat · 28/04/2025 14:53

In what way are you offended?

Ablondiebutagoody · 28/04/2025 14:53

Offensive is very melodramatic. Just tick prefer not to say.

RocketPanda · 28/04/2025 14:53

It feels as if for example being a wheelchair user is something a person can opt out of if they identify as someone with no mobility issues.

Andylion · 28/04/2025 14:54

I think the use of the word “identify” here is inappropriate.

DontKnowHelpMe · 28/04/2025 14:51

Do you identify as...

Identifying as something doesn't mean you are or you have something.

Thing is, two people can have the same thing, and one considers it a disability and the other doesn't.
Only one will identify as being disabled.

It's not just something you are told you are, as a fact

Worldgonecrazy · 28/04/2025 14:56

Identify?? How lovely it would be identify as someone who was not disabled!

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/04/2025 14:57

What are you offended about? You do you, but I can’t see what the issue is myself, I just wouldn’t answer it if I didnt want to.

They’ll both have the condition, whatever they feel about it 🙄

PineappleChicken · 28/04/2025 14:59

It will also be to cater and pander to all the self-diagnosers who ‘identify’ as neurodiverse but have absolutely no intention of going for an actual assessment.

KarmenPQZ · 28/04/2025 14:59

I dunno I kinda see what they’re getting at. In Covid I was classed as clinically vulnerable which I take great offence to and I don’t identify as vulnerable in any sense of the word.

you might have a visual impairment that’s real to you but not medically diagnosed.

Some d/Deaf people consider that they have a disability.

Some consider that they are not disabled but different. They would probably find the term Impairment quite offensive.

Some have lost their hearing with age and would just see themselves as people who sometimes use hearing aids.

All of these people could have the same level of hearing loss but not all would identify as disabled.

TheOriginalEmu · 28/04/2025 15:06

I suspect they ask it that way because many people with disabilities are averse to using the word ‘disabled’. It’s like they don’t think they can say they are disabled until someone allows them too. Asking ‘do you identify as’ means more people will consider the question.
I didn’t consider myself disabled even after I’d bought a wheelchair because my
mobility was so impacted by my condition. 😂

Now I have a very visible and very obvious disability, but back then because I could walk a bit and no one had prescribed me the wheelchair I still didn’t think I deserved to use that word for myself.

so, I don’t feel there is anything offensive about this wording.

OoooopsUpsideYourHead · 28/04/2025 15:10

I know quite a few people who are sure they have autism but have never gone for diagnosis.

So would it be correct to say they identify has having autism?

That's if it's the 'identify' bit that you find offensive OP.

Difficult to say as you haven't told us.

TheOriginalEmu · 28/04/2025 15:10

…and why would Argos want to ‘pander’ to people? What possible motivation do they have for that?

Delphiniumandlupins · 28/04/2025 15:17

Are you normally easily offended? Congratulations on your new appliance.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 28/04/2025 15:18

"Impairment"? Did I miss something in the Equality Act? I definitely don't "identify" with my disability - my disability is not me, it is an aspect of me.

3beesinmybonnet · 28/04/2025 15:18

It was the "do you identify as" wording re disabilities. I don't have any disabilities but thought if I did I'd have found this offensive, but didn't want to be getting offended on others behalf if they themselves think it's OK IYSWIM.
