Is having a pool and nice weather overhyped?

Keithlemondrop · 28/04/2025 12:39

I have really got completely obsessed with the idea of moving somewhere with sunny weather and where pools are the norm. There is NOTHING i love more than lazing around a pool on holiday, barbecuing and socialising with friends/family.

The world is really our oyster as both dh and I have very in demand jobs. And our kids are young. I sit in my bikini in my garden on a warm day but it’s just not the same. I know you cant out run your problems but a pretty garden and pool wouldnt hurt is my view.

Have I just overhyped this in my head? It just seems a wonderful lifestyle. Putting on a sundress on a Saturday morning and then going to do a big bbq food shop, followed by a day lounging by the pool seems like HEAVEN. Or is it just a bit of a novelty to me.

Do you live somewhere like this? What is your experience?

Gosh I'd love to have a pool even in the UK! I've toyed with the idea for as long as I can remember. But unfortunately we physically do not get long enough periods of sunshine in the south (unless the pools heated of course) 👀

PurpleThistle7 · 29/04/2025 11:20

I’d love it for some of the year but would not love the 40+ days that are inevitable in the middle of summer in places with that sort of climate. Ideally I’d have two homes but that’s entirely unrealistic for us!

angelinawasrobbed · 29/04/2025 11:24

For the last few years (now it’s just me, no kids) I’ve heated it just at the beginning of the season to take the chill off, then tougjed it out without. I do swim on ot ‘properly’ though

unsync · 29/04/2025 12:09

Highly recommend it. Just sitting here watching the yachts go by on a twinkling Med. Had a little paddle this morning when I got the bread. Will be popping out for ice cream later. Sun is out, not a cloud about and a gentle sea breeze to keep us cool. 22°C.

MightyGoldBear · 29/04/2025 12:33

Depending on the space you have op would your own pool with a greenhouse over it work for you? That's what we've got and it's lovely there are various price options too it doesn't have to be mega expensive at all. Our pool cost £130 with solar panels too you can heat it. I'm finding the UK is getting very hot but then I don't have much heat tolerance 🤷🏼‍♀️

tiutinkerbell · 29/04/2025 12:34

It is not overhyped, I absolutely love it.

KvotheTheBloodless · 29/04/2025 12:39

I'd hate it, the hot weather would be annoying when I needed to do anything other than lounge about the place. Holidays aren't real life - imagine having to do the shopping, go out and about, go for a run...etc. in 35°C!

I think posters are thinking it will be 22 degrees most of the time. But most places in the world with warm weather are now 35. Crept up over the last decade. And will be 40 pretty soon.

ForAzureSeal · 29/04/2025 12:53

I think concern for me with US would be the point about work expectations - long hours and very limited holiday allowance. I much prefer idea of south coast of England like a PP if you can afford it.

I also expected more answers about costs, time for maintenance and any concerns about water restrictions.

We’ve been in the algarve 20+ years. Yes summer is hot but we survive and it’s only for a matter of weeks. From September to May it’s either v pleasant or quite cold, we’ve just had the coldest wettest winter for over 20 years

I’m in the Caribbean and it averages 28-32oc all year round and I generally love hot weather, but working out is tough.
I run at 5am before sunrise when it’s still 27oc but the road isn’t hot. The rest of the day to day isn’t bad because everywhere has A/C.
A UK summer is a different beast compared to somewhere like the Caribbean where we’re so much better equipped for hot weather.

JoyDreamer86 · 29/04/2025 22:49

I've been back in the UK a few months now after a longish period abroad, cannot wait to go back!

Icebreakhell · 29/04/2025 22:59

If I were rich I’d move to LA in a heartbeat.

Good god I wouldn't. Even if I were a sun worshipper. There are so many better places. I had a friend who lived there so I visited a number of times. I wouldn't want to live there.

He left because every year the fires got closer...

...that alone is enough of a reason for me, before you consider the crime, the expense, the working practices, the poverty, the roads, the earthquakes and the politics.

Plenty of people in countries with four seasons have pools, it's not either/or.

Really?! I had no idea! This is brand new information for me! It's not as though, based on my post, that you could glean that I live somewhere like that myself, based on my comment that it gets hot here in the summer but I like the four seasons. 😒

OP had only made one post when I made mine, I thought she was intending to move someplace hot and sunny all year. B

But what’s the point of living in a climate where one has to hide indoors in aircon most of the time?

You acclimatise, I very rarely run air con, would have to be 35 plus before I'd need it now, but do feel cold if it's under 20 degrees. I run / hike with dogs twice a day, every day, but Perth has a desert climate, so in summer it's hot days, but cooler nights (with the odd exception).

But people do and just get on with life. You do get used to it though.
It is quite the same in reverse for those in a cold climate. We are not so used to that, so for example the past few days have been chilly around 19/20c and people have their jackets and scarves out.

CloverPyramid · 30/04/2025 07:05

I don’t think the sunny weather and pool are overhyped. If I could click my fingers and the UK was sunny and 16-22 degrees all year round, I’d do it. But moving countries is a lot more than that.

I’ve lived abroad a few times in my life and for me personally, the trade offs have never been worth it. I’ve greatly enjoyed living there, but knowing it was temporary was what made the hard bits tolerable and gave me the motivation to make the most of it.

TheHerboriste · 30/04/2025 03:59

Because my life isn’t a holiday. I still work full time, and have to ferry kids to/from activities. We do spend a lot of time outdoors, in the ocean or on a boat, but when the weather is hot and sunny all year round, it just becomes part of life.
We don’t hide indoors, but during the time of year when it’s 35oc and humidity is 80%, being outdoors isn’t that much fun.
