Is having a pool and nice weather overhyped?

Keithlemondrop · 28/04/2025 12:39

I have really got completely obsessed with the idea of moving somewhere with sunny weather and where pools are the norm. There is NOTHING i love more than lazing around a pool on holiday, barbecuing and socialising with friends/family.

The world is really our oyster as both dh and I have very in demand jobs. And our kids are young. I sit in my bikini in my garden on a warm day but it’s just not the same. I know you cant out run your problems but a pretty garden and pool wouldnt hurt is my view.

Have I just overhyped this in my head? It just seems a wonderful lifestyle. Putting on a sundress on a Saturday morning and then going to do a big bbq food shop, followed by a day lounging by the pool seems like HEAVEN. Or is it just a bit of a novelty to me.

Do you live somewhere like this? What is your experience?

We’ve got a pool at our summer home, and it is great! Absolutely love a swim, lounging in the sun etc. but I hate the steps to keep it clean, and fresh. Quite a bit of effort. 11/10 - would recommend.

Worriedsickmostofthetime · 28/04/2025 15:58

Also to add for £29 a month (converted) we get our pool cleaned and maintained once a week by a specialist company. It is a hack to do yourself.

I was thinking East Coast US? New England? Connecticut?

Canada is just too cold

Actually untrue - I live in Canada - although parts are certainly very cold in the winter, other parts are not as bad and very very hot in the summer.

we live on a lake and have a hottub and a great standard of living - but it is still very hard not seeing family whenever we want

Florajane · 28/04/2025 16:00

We live on the east coast of the US and have very hot summers. I have friends with pools and it's surprising how quickly they become mundane. The kids get over the novelty very quickly and never seem that bothered about using them. BBQs by the pool are nice if you like entertaining but I've definitely been surprised by how little people use them.

Agree. Ideally you want to earn your pounds and live here. I’d imagine though that getting visas etc may be a struggle although probably an improvement of late since our home affairs has had a bit of a shake up. But there do seem to be many British citizens living here so it can’t be impossible.

Yes, I assume there's a process - but no idea what it is! :) I have met a few people who have gone out there for work, but usually they get the job and THEN go out, so I assume their employer helps with visas. Me and many of my friends had one or both parents who were from the UK or Europe, but that was in the past when I assume it was easier to emigrate (to most places).

We live in Sydney and have a pool. We also have an outdoor kitchen with bbq and pizza oven and a Balinese gazebo and palm trees in our garden which makes the place feel quite resort like so obviously our life is not spent lounging by the pool but we do it enough to make us very glad we live where we do. Our kids grew up either hanging out in our pool with their friends or at other people’s houses doing the same, a very different childhood to mine.

Sounds amazing

the east coast of the U.S. is lovely. just avoid red states.

Churp · 28/04/2025 16:10

If your jobs and family are here and you like having seasons, why not just pivot to spending the six week summer holiday somewhere in the Mediterranean? You’d get a really good fix of pool and beach without upending your life. If work won’t let you work abroad obviously you’d have to take leave.

I also wouldn’t discount learning a language. It’s very do-able if you’re actually spending long periods of time immersed.

Also, to add, as a South African in the UK, when the weather is good we do routinely cook and eat outside which seems to be something that isn't htat common. we do it even more now we have a gas BBQ as we always felt bad in our relatively small garden with coals on a Tuesday afternoon or whatever. The only reason I am not BBQing this week is I've done all my food shopping and none of it is "braai"-friendly! I was nowhere near prepared enough for this glorious weather!

There must have been some emotions while you typed out BBQ there 🤣

It makes me sad that I do default to BBQ as a rule these days. On plus side, I switch back super easy when in SA or aroudn south Africans!!! Grin I tell myself it's like being completely fluent in two languages and routinely using the second one while in that country but seamlessly switching back when home!

Me too…. braai? Bbq? Check the audience and adjust if necessary. 😂😂😂

Flytrap01 · 28/04/2025 16:54

nice weather excellent, but a pool for me over hyped, id rather have a greenhouse office or the country house style gardens for the nice weather

God I genuinely think America could be on the edge of a massive economic and thus social downturn. The level of violence and crime is just too high to ignore at the moment. It's at least 4 times higher for homicide and even higher for violent crimes. If a severe economic breakdown happens then I dread to think what will happen.

Mimilamore · 28/04/2025 17:23

Recently returned from a holiday in a hot, humid climate… having a pool to get into at any point was wonderful…. not overhyped!

seanconneryseyebrow · 28/04/2025 17:28

I had this - I moved to oz, we had a pool and this lifestyle for 15 yrs. It was awesome. But I came back because I missed family, British humour and history. People won’t get this but I really really missed connecting with people through humour. Brits are just so different. I’m just much happier here.

The east coast of the US is FRIGID for at least 6 months of the year. Spring and autumn are lovely, but not summer dress weather. It also gets incredibly humid in summer depending on where you are. If you want somewhere temperate (most of the year) that is English speaking then California is your best bet, likely LA or San Diego. Editing to add, I live there as a former Brit, and it is quite delightful. I enjoy getting rain on a limited basis, and no longer being vitamin D deficient. I also lived in the east coast for many years, so the comments above are based on personal experience. I prefer the California sun and consistent temperatures. It is also very liberal as a state. Oz is great, but you are correct that it is far. Canada can be great depending on where you are.

Mypoorbody · 28/04/2025 17:36

I’m sure parts of it would be wonderful if you love the outdoors
Just remember that you won’t be on holiday. The pool etc may be great, though sometimes expensive to maintain.
Depending where you live in that heatheat you will also be carrying groceries to the car, waiting in the heat for a bus, inside working on a computer much of the day.

Pick area carefully as well, some places are getting too hot -,wildfires are getting closer to cities. In some places in the US (not all by any means) there isn’t a pavement/sidewalk so you have to drive or cycle somewhere to then walk.

Pls Can I ask how safe you feel in South Africa?

Edited

She prob doesnt....Her username is worriedsickmostofthetime 🤣

As an aside I bloody LOVED SA lifestyle. Absolutely epic...

I was desperate to move to cape town prekids- i even had a provisional job lined up via my employer but DH thought it was too dangerous and nixed it...

Moveoverdarlin · 28/04/2025 17:41

I’d like a pool in this country but I wouldn’t move abroad for one. Our NDN have one and they have used it a lot this year already.

Waitingfordoggo · 28/04/2025 13:05

I live on the south coast (England) and we have a pool. It doesn’t get used very much unless we have people round for BBQs.

Last summer wasn’t good weather-wise, but all of the other summers over the past eleven years we’ve lived here, there have been plenty of pool opportunities from May-September. When we first moved here, it got a lot of use as the kids were still young and there were also lots of kids in the neighbourhood who used to rock up every day with their towels and lilos 😂 The kids don’t go in it much now they’re older, unless they have friends over. DH uses it a fair bit. I have only been in it three times in the 11 years we’ve been here. We also live 500m from the beach and I very rarely go in the sea either- I’m not a swimmer! I do like lounging in the shade by the pool though. When friends come for a BBQ they always say they feel like they’re on holiday.

We use ours a lot between April and September, and it’s really lovely. A total blessing.

ShowMeTheSushi · 28/04/2025 17:43

Yes it’s like having a second job: cleaning, closing, reopening… but in a heatwave, it’s the one thing that makes you forget all the hassle.

Augustus40 · 28/04/2025 17:45

I got living in a warm climate out of my system in my 30s. I lived a year in Turkey.

Unrelenting heat is just so sapping and monotonous. Plus I don't really like swimming!

My username is more a reference to the plethora of family members with problems who have become to depend on us for medical and financial care. My dad currently has cancer and the medical care he has received here is so much better than the care my BIL received for cancer in the UK. So that’s another upside!
That being said I don’t recommend living in SA for the feint of heart. Whilst there are plenty of amazing things about living here you do need to have a thick skin.

coxesorangepippin · 28/04/2025 18:01

We live somewhere where it is reliably warm and sunny for ten weeks during the summer and you can have those ten weeks in the pool

It is bliss and a very easy time

coxesorangepippin · 28/04/2025 18:03

Canada isn't cold all year

It's cold Nov - April
