Police at door at 3am

AIBU to be worrying why the police just knocked on our door?

About 50 mins ago, door bell went. By the time DH had pulled some trousers on and got to the door and worked out it was safe to open the door, the police officer had walked back up the drive and pulled off in their car.

I called 101 and they have no record of a visit being made. No calling card was left.

Ive checked the phone and no messages from friends or family.

All our kids are at home here.

No mention of anything on village FB page and all seems quiet outside.

But now my mind is racing and I’m worried why they rang the door bell. I can’t think it’ll be routine at this time of the morning. Or do they? (I’ve not reported any issues and no calls made from this house - all kids phones are on the landing since last night.)

When I was a response cop, my colleague and I nearly gave a poor couple heart failure by hammering in their door in the early hours, following a call saying a domestic was ongoing. They were totally bewildered.

It turned out we were at ABC Terrace and the incident was at ABC Avenue (or similar) We were so apologetic, and they were very gracious about it. After they were able to breathe properly again. 🙈

Luckily the correct street was the next one along so we weren’t too delayed getting to the genuine caller.

*rubs crystal ball in a menacing manner

I reckon they’ll come back in about an hour and a half and say it was all about a missing child or summat.

*puts crystal ball back in a Tesco bag for life.

No, that can’t’ be right. The police are known for their “we tried to arrest you but you were out. So we arrested your neighbour instead” calling cards. I think they use the same ones as DPD 🤣

"I'd be dropping a line to the Chief Constable"

I bet that would make him put down his custard cream and have a good long think about his leadership style Grin

This is absolutely hilarious.

They came back. About an hour and half after first visit.

They explained they were trying to locate a vulnerable child and a number registered to our address related on one of this child’s friends. They gave the name of this vulnerable child and friend whose number is registered to our house but neither rang any bells with us. We did give them ours kids names and schools and going in case it helped them.

Relieved for us but very sad for the family who are obviously going through hell right now.

I had something similar - police banging on door at 3am for a child at risk who was 13. My daughter had a friend here for a sleepover so I had to wake them up to show it wasn't the girl in question. They vaguely knew the girl but had no idea where she was. Police also woke up two lots of neighbours although we are not hard to find....

Okay. Why not call the chief of police? That's what I did.

I think your exaggerating there a bit....you wouldn't even be able to get a number for the cheif of police!!

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 30/04/2025 06:58

You havnt wrote a tweet or Facebook post saying something against the narrative have you🤦‍♀️

Here in the US, "knocking people up" means getting them pregnant. That would probably be unacceptable for the police to do that, at least while they're on the job.

I hope the child is found.

Does over here as well.

@EffortlesslyInelegant - I'd love to be your friend....this post had me properly lolling Grin

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. The point is to call the administration, not just the public line.

His donut, don’t you mean? 😄

could be something in neighbourhood - and they are checking for witnesses etc

Menobaby79 · 01/05/2025 04:47

One came to our door once while we were at work. We saw him on the Ring doorbell. Never found out why but called the station to ask why he came.
They said it was possibly to see if we had any doorbell footage of an incident on our street. He didn't come back anyway.

I don't understand why it took so long to open the door.
Did nobody look out of the window and see it was the police?

I don’t understand why you don’t understand. It was the middle of the night; OP and her husband will have been woken unexpectedly. Surely you must know not every property has the same layout? Maybe OP’s bedroom is at the back of the house? Or she simply can’t see from her bedroom window who is at the door.

My bedroom is in the attic conversion, two floors up - no way could I see from there, in pitch dark, who was at the door. I’d also have to get down two flights of stairs to answer it (assuming I actually did and didn’t panic it was an intruder trying to bring me to the door).

Calm down.
Perfectly simple question. It is the first thing I - and any normal person - would do.
Not my fault you live up in the Gods.

I missed the bit where OP gave timings. Maybe the police did their version of knock and run 🤷‍♀️.

Waking up from a sleep, getting decently dressed and going to the door and opening it does generally take more than a second or two.

And ‘looking out of the window’ is subjective. Maybe, as the pp mentioned, OPs window does not overlook the front.

Oh okay. He saw the car drive away from the door but the property doesn't have a single window on that side.
Yeah, yeah,
I smell BS.

Oh FFS - it’s hardly “The Gods”. It’s just not right by the front door. Most people’s bedrooms aren’t.

I’m perfectly calm. You’re the one trying to suggest OP is making it all up because her husband didn’t get to the door in time.

Hells bells I missed where OP said she has no windows on that side! Thank god you’re paying attention!

I guess I’m lucky in that although I have bedrooms that don’t overlook the front, I do have other windows on the front. I generally don’t look out of them at night though. It’s dark.

Yes - I think OP is attention seeking.

IndigoViolent · 01/05/2025 13:38

Well if she is, she’s hardly picked the raciest of topics, has she? And you’re supposed to keep the mystery going; not confirm a couple of posts later that it was just a house to house and there’s no mystery.

I can only see one person trying to draw attention to herself, and it’s not the OP.
