Police at door at 3am

AIBU to be worrying why the police just knocked on our door?

About 50 mins ago, door bell went. By the time DH had pulled some trousers on and got to the door and worked out it was safe to open the door, the police officer had walked back up the drive and pulled off in their car.

I called 101 and they have no record of a visit being made. No calling card was left.

Ive checked the phone and no messages from friends or family.

All our kids are at home here.

No mention of anything on village FB page and all seems quiet outside.

But now my mind is racing and I’m worried why they rang the door bell. I can’t think it’ll be routine at this time of the morning. Or do they? (I’ve not reported any issues and no calls made from this house - all kids phones are on the landing since last night.)

The police once knocked on my door and asked if they could come through to my garden to chase a suspect.
I was in a terraced house and the suspect was hopping fences between gardens, they were trying different doors to try and surround him.
Maybe something time sensitive like that.

Towwanthustice · 29/04/2025 15:12

Might have just been a routine door to door . Has a neighbour reported an incident perhaps? Don't worry they will be back if it's important. I wouldn't worry

MyTwinklyPanda · 29/04/2025 16:14

Use to work on 101. They wont know why officers have come to your home. Most forces have over 1000 officers all doing different jobs at one time, even at night. 101 can help for many things, they're more than just a gateway to speak to someone nor are they just telephonists, I use to get this alot. Unless you have a reference for an ongoing incident they wont be able to assist.

The officers were probably doing door to door. If they wish to speak to you they will come back.

It's horrid having that knock though, makes you worry and wonder!

CrazyAboutFurBabies · 29/04/2025 17:52

Was it definitely a police car they were in and did you take note of their badge numbers OP?

There are a lot of incidents - more so lately of people pretending to be police officers, very persuasive and very realistic outfits, to scope out peoples houses for robberies etc etc so be careful.

Purdycat82 · 29/04/2025 17:54

My sister had a knock at about the same time a few months back, it was because she had a ring door bell and they were looking for footage of a drunk driver who had crashed nearby

hcee19 · 29/04/2025 17:55

. All calls, treble 9"s and treble 1's are answered by the same people. It is odd the police officer never left you his card. Maybe he had been given the wrong address and was only told this after knocking on your door. Please do not worry, if it was a major issue, the officer would have waited long enough for you to answer the door and, almost certainly would have left his name and contact details.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/04/2025 17:57

They'll either come back in next few days or it was a wrong address.
The police make minor mistakes a lot I'd imagine, they could've been looking for the neighbours, or in the wrong street with the same name?
If someone had died or committed a crime they'd definitely come back.

Icequeen01 · 29/04/2025 18:17

The Op updated as the police did return!

Did you call 101 to validate their shoulder numbers before you gave your children’s names and school at crazy o’clock?

I thought that!! Might of been someone impersonating the police and she's randomly giving out her kids names!!

Omg that's actually quite disconcerting, there's no record of the visit and they didn't leave any kind of 'We knocked but got no reply' type of card etc. I don't know but something feels really off about it. Were they really police? I mean if they had a police car then fair enough but? Not to mention 3am!!! That would pi*s me off straight away tbf! Don't they have any respect!!

*rubs crystal ball in a menacing manner

I reckon they’ll come back in about an hour and a half and say it was all about a missing child or summat.

*puts crystal ball back in a Tesco bag for life.

I was responding to other posts that indicated the police do knock people up in the early hours without good reason. That is unacceptable.

Here in the US, "knocking people up" means getting them pregnant. That would probably be unacceptable for the police to do that, at least while they're on the job.

I hope the child is found.

HRR107 · 29/04/2025 20:06

As everyone as else has said, if it was important, I think they would have been more persistent, so try not to worry.

Around a year ago I had police hammering on my door at around 4am. I looked out the window and was shocked to see it was police so went straight down. Turns out they were looking for someone who lives in the flats behind and got our addresses muddled up. It’s probably something along those lines so I really wouldn’t worry!

twoshillings · 29/04/2025 20:19

This happened to us last year, doorbell went at about 1.30am, we rushed down in a panic when my husband said it’s the police. When I answered the door the lady said they had a call from this house, when I said that was impossible as we were all asleep she relayed it to the radio and they confirmed it was a call that hung up on them but they didn’t have an exact address. They apologised for waking us and left

Bethany45 · 29/04/2025 20:23

I had similar ca 9pm but he was there in plain clothes showed me his warrant card. He was just asking if I had seen any disturbance last night and if my cameras had any recordings - gave me his phone number and email

so I looked and didnt find anything so happy to do my bit for our manor😀

JohnTheRevelator · 29/04/2025 20:35

It couldn't have been that important because they'd have contacted you again.

They’d have come back within 2 hours if it was important.

Or an hour and a half.

Or thereabouts 🤦‍♀️.

MsAmerica · 29/04/2025 21:31

Okay. Why not call the chief of police? That's what I did.

We once had the police knock in the middle of the night. A suspect had ran down the street and in the process knocked our bin over. They wanted to know if we had seen or heard anything. We had heard a noise but hadn’t looked out.

it was probably something like that but as said above local station should have a record

Yes this. We've had it twice as we live rurally and they were out looking for offenders in our garden (which is woodland).

LittleGreenDuck · 29/04/2025 22:12

Jeez, do people lose the ability to read after about 3pm?

Try reading just the OP's posts if you can't be arsed to read the full thread. There's only two, it won't take long.

Exactly, I despair!
