Tipping 10% for a haircut.

based in London (Leytonstone not central).

Is it acceptable for me to tip £5 for a basic £44 cut, or will that come across as stingy

thanks

I’ve never, in my life, tipped for a haircut. So your tip is very generous, as mine would be zero

I’m in a small town, I tip around 20% for a £25 dry trim, but I like the lady and feel cheap for just getting a dry trim.

Maybe just take £50 in cash and say ‘keep the change’ as you hand it over, then you can swiftly walk out?

JandamiHash · 26/04/2025 11:08

It’s 10% more than I’ve ever tipped on a haircut. Then again I go to a higher end salon and pay a lot more than average and my hairdresser drives a Range Rover and wears a £400 jacket so I figure she doesn’t need a tip

SallyWD · 26/04/2025 11:08

My haircut is £68 and I tip a fiver. I think that's plenty. My hairdresser works at a salon but is self employed. I only ever have a hair wash and trim so I think she's getting loads of money from me!! I also tip £3 to the junior member of staff who washes my hair.

Growlybear83 · 26/04/2025 11:10

I think 10% is the expected rate, although if I was paying £44, I would probably round it up to £50.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/04/2025 11:10

I don’t tip anymore as I already pay £70 for a cut and colour when I could colour it myself.

3678194b · 26/04/2025 11:10

I tip nowhere near 10%. I'll just round up, say £95 round to £100.

My hair dresser is self employed working at a salon where they don't have juniors etc, each stylist is self employed and they've just put their prices up. It's expensive enough as it is.

FarmGirl78 · 26/04/2025 11:11

How perfectly timed! I have JUST come out of the hairdressers without tipping as it's gone up from £35 to £40 without warning. I was too stunned to say anything. That's for a trim in a working class northern town. I'll be looking for somewhere else next time.

justkeepswimingswiming · 26/04/2025 11:12

Hair cuts are expensive enough without having to tip!

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 26/04/2025 11:13

I've never tipped a hairdresser aside from my last appointment before Christmas. I've actually just given up going at all because the price of going every 8 weeks for a cut and colour has become astronomical.

MissUltraViolet · 26/04/2025 11:13

I don’t tip for either myself or DD. Prices have gone up so much in last couple of years that I sometimes struggle to afford it at all let alone giving more on top!

CiaoMeow · 26/04/2025 11:13

I used to tip, but with extortionate prices that many places charge, I've now stopped. I don't feel guilty.

Anewuser · 26/04/2025 11:13

I’ve often wondered this.

Just paid £180 at the hairdressers and gave her a fiver. She must think I’m really stingy. No way would I give £18 tip. I’d rather give nothing.

FarmGirl78 · 26/04/2025 11:15

I think I've previously tipped because when I was little my Mum did, but I've just realised from other comments that was to the Saturday girl who just washed hair. Whereas where I go it's the same person who does the whole appointment.

SilviaSnuffleBum · 26/04/2025 11:15

I have always tipped any time I am pleased with the cut/colour, but never more than a fiver. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/04/2025 11:17

I always used to tip the hairdresser, in every salon I’ve been to. I’ve stopped now though, because the prices rise without warning, so a cut and colour is over £150.

Expected by who?

Expected by who?

By hairdressers. It’s been the norm as far back as I can remember to the early 1960s to tip hairdressers, as well as taxi drivers and waiters/waitresses.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/04/2025 11:35

Would a 'tin' of Quality Street be acceptable?

Our Bin Men seem quite content with that once a year - and they come to our house every other week.

alcoholnightmare · 26/04/2025 11:38

I think you’re very generous! I tip £10 for my regular cut and colour (well over £100), and £20 at Christmas

Sorry off topic I know but £40? Oop North for a trim?! May I be nosey and ask is this a specialist trim or just a regular dry trim?

Ah, sorry, wash and blow dry trim.

Iwilladmit · 26/04/2025 11:53

I tip my hair dresser £50

BankHolidayBonanza · 26/04/2025 11:58

A few pennies would be insulting

£5 is perfectly acceptable, many clients do not tip at all.

My hairdressers have tins with the name of each member of staff, some client just put 1 coin or 2 in them - it's not a bad idea, they don't feel embarrassed that they give "too little", it's better than not giving anything, and it adds up.
