based in London (Leytonstone not central).

Is it acceptable for me to tip £5 for a basic £44 cut, or will that come across as stingy

thanks

How do ye deal with not tipping with the new cars machines asking do you want to tip before you insert card

So awkward

My salon has a QR code on display and if you want to leave a tip, you select your stylist in the app. It’s completely separate to the bill transaction, and is optional. Staff get to keep 100% of their tips (though I assume they tip out to junior staff.)

Bert2025 · 27/04/2025 07:33

I tip £2 - 3 per appointment. Not much but better than nothing and shows my appreciation for the service i get which is really good. I quite often have no cash on me and you can't add it via card machine where I go so I sometimes don't tip and tip more the next time. Been going to the someplace for about 20years now and my hairdresser knows what I am like!

I always tip my stylist and the girl who shampoos me. The salon has an online tipping system whereby you scan a qr code which is displayed in various places - mirrors and the reception desk. So don’t have to worry about having cash on me.

I tip £3-5 for cut and blow dry which costs £47 these days and £10 if I am getting highlights done which is about £100. Also give the junior who washes my hair £1 or £2 depending on what change I have, £1 feels a bit tight these days but I reckon she washes 5 people per hour so if everyone gave that, she would be doing well.

itsgettingweird · 27/04/2025 08:40

I always round up to nearest £10.

My ds has his cut by a pop up barber in town £8 so give a tenner. (Use to be £7.

Lady who threads my eyebrows is £7 - I give a tenner.

My hair cut is £23 I hand over £30.

Of I go for wash cut and blow dry it’s £35 so I give £40.

I don’t look at it as percentage. I just round up. I think this happened more when people paid cash but I imagine now it’s generally all card and people get offered to add tip (privately) if shows you’ve clicked 5 or 10%, an amount or another %tage.

I wouldn’t worry about it though. For a £44 haircut I’d add 10% to round up to almost £50 via card machine but would pay £50 if cash.

I literally don’t understand the logic behind tipping hairdressers.

Bar and waiting staff I get because it’s a minimum wage job and it’s often youngsters. Ditto delivery drivers and riders.

Taxi drivers I suppose because you typically handed over cash (until recently) and probably would also be keen to get out the car, and might also be with friends on a night out or whatever (so more temptation to be generous and say keep the change rather than make everyone wait for them to count out £1.70 or whatever).

Why hairdressers?

There's no logic to tipping anyone. As you say, NMW, everyone gets at least that. Not all NMW earners are tipped so the expectation is just that. I don't toe the tipping party line as it's skewed to waiting staff.

I tip for really great service - and I heavily tip for the services that matter to me. Everyone else can do what they want.

Peacepleaselouise · 27/04/2025 09:24

I pay £60, that’s a fair amount for the costs involved (no expensive products/dyes). I sometimes tip but not 10%. I don’t really agree with tipping. Just charge the amount that you deem fair and I’ll decide if I’m willing to pay! But that is a bigger rant about tipping culture…

Reliablesource · 27/04/2025 09:27

I wouldn’t tip for just a haircut. But now that I need my hair coloured as well as cut, it takes a couple of hours and costs about £100 a time and I tip £5 cash. I have observed that most customers don’t tip at all in the salons I go to, and it’s an affluent area.

Tips for hairdressing are a grey area and I’m never sure what the etiquette is.

£7 is a massive tip for a £23 haircut! But nice that you're generous.

It is huge. But they are also very good and that cut is usually by the lowest stylist type who is likely on minimum wage and learning. If they up their charges I’d still only hand over £30!

Also I like them because these places still take cash - I hate the card machine where you have to add tip yourself or even worse the QR system where you scan and tip.

All the time my local hairdressers allow cash payments I’ll continue to tip the young stylists well!!!

itsgettingweird · 27/04/2025 09:54

I might add I’m not someone who’s there every 6 weeks. I get a cut 3-4 times a year!

TourangaLeila · 27/04/2025 09:57

I never tip. Hairdressers make shit loads of money. Unless you run a salon with big overheads your laughing all the way to the bank!

I once got talking to an old school friend who rents a chair in a salon and her weekly take home was 2.5k net!!!!

Bollocks am I tipping

EveryFlavourJellyBeans · 27/04/2025 10:00

I used to tip. In 2020 my hairdresser charged £35. Now the same service is £55. According to the government inflation calculator it should be around £43. So I don't tip anymore.

SallyWD · 27/04/2025 15:46

My hairdresser charges £68 and I only have a wash, a trim and a blow dry. I stick with her because I like her. She's only holiday every few weeks it seems, going to the most exotic locations. I really don't think she's struggling for money. I still tip her a fiver but wouldn't go above thar.

ExtraOnions · 27/04/2025 15:50

Would you tip a Chiropodist, or a Physiotherapist ? What about a Plumber, or an Electrician?

Why would you tip a hairdresser ??

Catwoman8 · 27/04/2025 16:02

I don't intend to tip, however if the overall cost was £88 for example, I'd give the hairdresser £90 just to round up , it's cash only and I'm not fussed about a couple of quid. If I was paying on card, they would get the exact amount.

Notsosure1 · 27/04/2025 16:14

Anewuser · 26/04/2025 11:13

I’ve often wondered this.

Just paid £180 at the hairdressers and gave her a fiver. She must think I’m really stingy. No way would I give £18 tip. I’d rather give nothing.

Yeah it’s difficult if your treatment already cost a lot of money - an expected 10%+ is unfair when others are tipping more manageable amounts for their 10%’s. It’s like in a restaurant if you order the steak and more expensive drinks, your bill racks up and so does the tip if you’re working to a blanket percentage. It’s the same level of service for waiting staff as it would be for cheaper items but you’re expected to pay more in the service charge.

Of course in most places tipping is optional, it’s the feeling of guilt if you’re a regular customer I guess.

I went out last night and the CF’s had included a 13% service charge on the bill!

Wendalicious · 27/04/2025 16:22

I work in a school office and get paid badly but do a great job- please tip me 😉

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/04/2025 17:38

I never do it. My hairdresser is expensive, and not that transparent about pricing, I find.

CarpetKnees · 27/04/2025 17:56

This makes me so angry.
No-one should be allowed to present you with a bill that is higher than the prices they advertise - so in this case, the prices on the menu.

Marble10 · 27/04/2025 18:55

I also round up, my hairdresser knows this too so my amount is always £125 or £135..so £130 or £140 I end up leaving
I wouldn’t go to the hassle of leaving £13.50 for example.

DemBonesDemBones · 27/04/2025 19:57

@ExtraOnionsI always get people that work on our house a gift when they finish the work. Alcohol or chocolates or a cake or something.

hattie43 · 27/04/2025 20:04

I tip a fiver . Tbh I wish I hadn’t started but now I’d feel awkward stopping
