Colleague eating egg mayo sandwiches - to say something?

DontGiveUp90 · 25/04/2025 14:52

As above really…my colleague is lovely but insists on eating the most foul smelling egg sandwiches for her lunch. It lingers all afternoon and makes me feel sick.

Would I be unreasonable to say something? We don’t have a break out area where she could eat them as only a small office.

OP posts:
FrenchandSaunders · 25/04/2025 16:58

Has anyone tried the new M&S egg mayo and cornish cruncher sarnie 😛

Lighteningstrikes · 25/04/2025 16:58

You’re being utterly ridiculous.

Is this the only worry in your tiny world?

Mangolover123 · 25/04/2025 17:07

I love an egg mayo sandwich (misses the point) - to be honest I think you have no right to ask her to stop.

Megifer · 25/04/2025 16:43

"I mean, fine, do it, but know that everyone is calling you 'Stinky Egg Woman' behind your back."

Yea, if your colleagues are, like, 5 years old.

Exactly
Its childishly pathetic

OP YABU

Its not only about You.

GeorgianaM · 25/04/2025 16:50

'Jesus wept Maureen! I don't know what is in your sandwiches but it smells like it's been dead awhile!' Then lots of heaving and opening a window and pointing a fan in her direction.

How pathetic

Freehugs · 25/04/2025 17:10

Very cheap, filling and nutritious lunch. If she’s eating them every day I wonder if she’s just trying to be frugal. Cost of living is a bitch right now, I don’t think I’d say anything and try to find other solutions like opening windows/doors. If the smell is lingering due to her lunch box in her bag or sandwich bags in the bin, maybe a gentle conversation about how much the smell is bothering you and ask if she could wash out her stuff after eating or dispose of packing else where. I would assume that a bin or lunch box with home made egg mayo would fester quite a bit. Not had a home made egg sandwich in a long time now in the mood for one 😝

safetyfreak · 25/04/2025 17:12

I love egg sandwiches but I am aware they smell so don't eat them in public around others.

But, you cant tell someone else not to eat them...they are a popular sandwich.

Ifeelabitsick · 25/04/2025 15:15

Christ you all need to get a grip.

And your problem is??? There are some amusing conversations on here and if you don’t approve, perhaps you should stay away! Things don’t always have to be serious, or life-changing. Don’t be such a grump! ☹️

Magnastorm · 25/04/2025 15:12

This is a radical idea but.... just say to her "do you mind not eating those sandwiches in the office please, they stink the place out".

Not hard.

If someone said that to me i would tell them to do one
Its an EGG sarnie fgs
hardly the end of the world
No wonder so many kids grow up to be entitled and snowflake if this is how parents behave

Growlybear83 · 25/04/2025 17:14

I would much rather put up with a bit of a smell from someone’s food than hearing them crunching and slurping. I think there’s every bit as much of an argument for banning eating crisps in a shared work area as egg mayonnaise sandwiches.

Spinachpastapicker · 25/04/2025 17:15

Poonu · 25/04/2025 15:00

Gosh I'd be vomming.😳 I know everyone's going to jump on this statement but that sounds revolting.

Yeah I’m going to jump. It’s just eggs and mayo. Honestly, you sound pathetic.

MimiGC · 25/04/2025 17:15

I have shared an office with someone who microwaved tinned fish and a different office with someone who microwaved their leftover curry. Some people are simply inconsiderate.

TonTonMacoute · 25/04/2025 17:20

The problem here is that there is no separate room for people to eat their lunch. I don't think anyone should have to eat in their office - both for their sake and their colleagues'.

The McDonalds advert where some woman is chowing down on a burger and spills mayo on her skirt makes me sick, I couldn't imagine having to work while someone ate a MaccyDs right next to me in the office.

Vile. Do people really have to put up with this these days?

Chocolatefreak · 25/04/2025 17:24

If she’s trying to save money by bringing her own lunch then maybe her options are limited - lots of sandwich fillings smell - sardine, egg, tuna etc. Also, pretty much anything smells if you microwave it. What do you eat for lunch, OP? Are you pregnant or do you suffer in some way from strong smells or allergies?

At least egg sandwiches aren’t actively bad for your health - unlike smoke, or febreezeHmm

It seems a bit unreasonable to complain about something that’s a fairly standard British lunch. Maybe you could suggest that she limits the smelly sandwiches to once or twice a week - or ask her how she feels about going to eat in the park with her sandwich, if that’s an option.

Kxidwn · 25/04/2025 17:27

Really? It's only an egg sarnie. Open a window

HarryVanderspeigle · 25/04/2025 17:29

MoistVonL · 25/04/2025 16:52

Who calls it "smelly egg sandwich"? I don't know anyone who says that.

It's less smelly than fish or ripe soft cheese in a sandwich.

Well Mr Lipwig, maybe all that garlic in Uberwald is masking the smell for you. I agree that I also wouldn't take a mackerel or camembert sarnie to work. All things that are unlikely to be enjoyed by colleagues hours after the making, especially if they haven't been in the fridge.

greengreyblue · 25/04/2025 17:30

I can’t imagine they smell that bad.

TortolaParadise · 25/04/2025 17:31

I hear you OP. I can not bear the smell of tea and wear my perfume heavily to block it out. For me the smell of tea is vomitable (might have made that word up) but it is such a popular drink there is nothing I can do. I am sure there a folks who can't bear the smell of my perfume too! I always open windows but folks complain about the cold. I give up. 😩

Coconutter24 · 25/04/2025 17:31

FrenchandSaunders · 25/04/2025 15:03

For some reason shop bought egg sarnies don’t smell like home made ones.

Shop bought egg sarnies smell foul, like someone has just farted in the packet!!

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 25/04/2025 17:34

I hear you @DontGiveUp90 - they absolutely stink and anyone who thinks they don't must have no sense of smell.

I used to work with this real jobsworth. She used to very ostentatiously open the windows and the office door when I ate a sandwich. I wouldn't have minded but it was only ham and cherry tomatoes!

We lost our microwave at one stage as one idiot senior manager decide to heat mince pies in it... with the foil cases still on them!!!

Here’s a radical idea. If you don’t like it, tough
Do you mind not imposing your excessive olfactory sensitivity upon colleagues

Our cleaner in work asked me not to wear Samsara perfume as it gave her a headache!

Christ you all need to get a grip.

This. At our work people microwave eggs, curry, fish...whatever they like and rightly so. If you don't like the smell then leave the room

Boutonnière · 25/04/2025 17:36

I love egg mayonnaise but it’s up there with fish for not eating in confined spaces like offices, trains etc. Bad manners from those eating without thinking about the effect on others.

I think that's just rude and insensitive. People should avoid bringing particularly smelly food to eat at their desk. If there's a separate eating area, that would be different because people could avoid it!
