Colleague eating egg mayo sandwiches - to say something?

DontGiveUp90 · 25/04/2025 14:52

As above really…my colleague is lovely but insists on eating the most foul smelling egg sandwiches for her lunch. It lingers all afternoon and makes me feel sick.

Would I be unreasonable to say something? We don’t have a break out area where she could eat them as only a small office.

OP posts:
ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 25/04/2025 15:15

Ask her to keep them in the fridge to reduce the smell. If she's got any social graces she'll take the hint and stop bringing them altogether.

Ifeelabitsick · 25/04/2025 15:15

Christ you all need to get a grip.

Gosh I'd be vomming.😳 I know everyone's going to jump on this statement but that sounds revolting.

Eating eggs is revolting? Don’t be daft.

toomuchfaff · 25/04/2025 15:17

Looks like you need to get onto management to provide break out facilities so she doesn't eat at the desk. Shouldn't be eating in the "office" space anyhow, encourage her to go away from desks to eat?

BlueTitShark · 25/04/2025 15:18

Oh dgs, it’s an egg sandwich. Not some random past their best, rotting whatever.

You remind me of someone complaining I was eating garlic and it was awful. I was eating some hummus. Store bought. It had no garlic in 😂😂

BarnacleBeasley · 25/04/2025 15:19

Come on, everyone who's ever been on a school trip knows that egg sandwiches stink. There was always one child who would try and eat one on the coach.

Sulu17 · 25/04/2025 15:20

My profound sympathies OP, I cannot bear egg sandwiches and even reading about them has made me feel a bit nauseous.

I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to say anything but I'd have to keep a deodoriser on my desk. I would hate this situation.

BlueTitShark · 25/04/2025 15:20

@BarnacleBeasley is it only egg sandwiches or hard boiled eggs in general?
You never eat hard boiled egg ever then? And you’ll disapprove of hard boiled eggs in a salad too?

Because strangely enough, that never seems to be an issue…..

Open the windows and spray some room scent spray or febreeze. You cannot police what she eats

In lots of workplaces those sorts of sprays are banned

Eggs. And mayonnaise.

Grow up.

stripedrollerskates · 25/04/2025 15:21

I think the bigger issue here is that you don’t have anywhere outside of your office to eat lunch.

I thought there was garlic in hummus.

SouthWesterlyBreeze · 25/04/2025 15:23

I LOVE egg mayo sarnies so I'd tell you to go away or eat your lunch somewhere else.

millymoo1202 · 25/04/2025 15:23

I’d have to say something as I hate any form of eggs 🤮

All bought hummus has garlic in it that's why I make my own.

I do eat hard-boiled eggs, but probably wouldn't in a shared office space. I actually wouldn't eat anything in a shared office space that a colleague had specifically told me they struggled with the smell of, and I'd hope my colleagues would be equally considerate to me.

Egg sandwiches do smell stronger, and especially when they haven't been in the fridge. I think it is to do with the freshness (or otherwise) of the egg.

I was just thinking that that would irritate my asthma!

I'd rather the smell from the egg sandwich!

I don't think she is offering to share her lunch around.

Megifer · 25/04/2025 15:27

Good lord no, I'm not a huge fan but i wouldn't say anything, I'd hate to be labelled as the overly sensitive one who overreacts to a perfectly normal lunch.

I'd just mark it down as one of those life smells that makes me wrinkle my nose but just get on with it like an adult.

suki1964 · 25/04/2025 15:28

In my last job the guys would kick off if I opened a tin of sardines to have on toast. I ignored them and carried on

Because the smell of their pot noodles turned my stomach

I never said they couldn't eat a pot noodle, so Id be dammed if anyone was telling me what I could eat for lunch

babyproblems · 25/04/2025 15:29

i thought my mum was the last person on earth eating egg mayo sandwiches. It can’t be her as she is retired so there must be two of them 😂😂

LittleBigHead · 25/04/2025 15:30

IsIroningEssential · 25/04/2025 15:06

I think this is quite amusing. I love an egg sandwich. Never occurred to me that my colleagues would have an issue with it 😂

Me neither.

And I have colleagues who seem to eat whole heads of garlic for their supper, but I don't say a word.

Saladleaves17 · 25/04/2025 15:31

Yes I would say something. I used to work with someone who would heat up a can of tuna in the microwave every lunch time and it made the whole staff room and surrounding areas stink of fish. It got to the point where people refused to use the staff room, one was gagging so much we thought she was going to be physically sick and you couldn’t use the microwave after as your lunch ended up having a fishy taste. - I’m gagging thinking about it! Management stepped in and asked him to eat something else or at the very least not heat it up and he did as they asked.

It’s not okay to be inconsiderate to your colleagues. There are thousands of other things she can eat that won’t cause people to feel ill. But she may not be aware of how you are feeling, so i would definitely just ask her politely. If someone asked me to not eat something as it was making them feel ill, I would try my best to not bring it in again or would make sure I ate somewhere else.

LittleBigHead · 25/04/2025 15:31

Mmmmm this is making me want a really fresh white bread, with egg, mayonnaise & cress sandwich, expertly filled (by me) with Seabrooks salted crisps.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 25/04/2025 15:32

I like an egg mayo and tomato sandwich but in the privacy of my own home.
