AIBU to cancel interview due to COVID?

Sexisthairdressers · 24/04/2025 07:21

I have a job interview this morning but have COVID. Didn't sleep. Work up feeling crap and did a test. Just emailed to cancel. Feel terrible that it's last minute and really want the job. Have asked to reschedule. Did I do the right thing? AIBU? For info, it was a 4 hour interview (tests etc then face to face interview - just don't think I could have got through it - quite apart from not wanting to infect everyone).

Actual evidence, peer reviewed, written by people who understand science and statistics?

Yes

Over40Overdating · 24/04/2025 10:02

@Mumoftwo52 it’s not just old people who are at risk from Covid, so adding ageism to your ableism.

Fatalities might not be in numbers that you think matter but death is not the only outcome you should be measuring your care of Covid by. People who were previously healthy have been left disabled by Covid. Have been left with chronic health conditions that impact their daily lives in ways people like you are happy to dismiss for your own comfort.

I ‘worry’ about Covid more than any of the diseases you deem worthier because testing if I have symptoms, staying home if I am positive or wearing a mask if I am unsure are easy ways that don’t impact me but could be the difference between someone else not catching it or becoming disabled by it.

It’s not a wild concept to understand that some people are more vulnerable than others and me being triggered by my own selfishness is not reason enough to say ‘well screw you, I’ve moved on, bedwetter’

Vulnerability and disability through health will come to many of us, regardless of how invincible we feel now. It will be far too late to start giving a shit about how the actions of others can make a difference by the time you get there.

Question285 · 24/04/2025 07:33

That’s bollocks. As an interviewer, I’d be fuming if a candidate showed up visibly unwell and contagious.

You did the right thing, OP. You are so unwell that you were unable to sleep. The fact that it’s COVID or the flu is irrelevant. Hopefully they will reschedule. But if they don’t, I’d say you dodged a bullet. Do you want to work for the sort of organisation that expects employees to drag themselves out of bed to go into the office sick?

Exactly!!

bigvig · 24/04/2025 07:24

You won't get the job. I'd think you were flaky OP.

This is nonsense! I have interviewed people and I would much prefer someone who is sick not to come in and pass it on. We would always rearrange in those circumstances. What we wouldn't do is give someone who is obviously sick the job if they come in when infected

NestOfWipers · 24/04/2025 10:04

IkeaMeatballGravy · 24/04/2025 07:33

If I were desperate for the job I would have dosed myself up and carried on. You shouldn't have to, but the job market in some areas is very competitive right now. Sympathetic employers do exist, but they are in the minority. They will probably hire someone else today.

Delightful. Absolutely no thought for anybody else, I wouldn't want someone so selfish working for me.

Why do we have to be around knowingly sick people though? What’s wrong with them staying at home to rest and recover, if possible? Just because some people have a visceral psychological reactIon to the Covid years, it doesn’t mean we all have to go to the other extreme and pretend we don’t mind catching every passing virus and get unwell.

As some of us start to get on a bit, our immune systems naturally age as well, and it’s less robust compared to when we were young (which is why vaccines are not as effective in older people). Even mild colds can kill the elderly, who are a part of our society. I am grateful when sick people physically make an effort to keep their germs to themselves, even if they can’t afford not to work.

Because we cannot always shut ourselves away from society at the smallest sign of a sniffle.

Kids have to go to school, they mix germs, they come home to parents, parents go out to work, viruses and bacteria spread. This is life. If YOU want to stay home and shut yourself away from ‘the germs’, go ahead. But you can’t seriously expect people who have to continue to earn money and go to school to stay at home because they have a runny nose.

Most people carry viruses - including Covid - and don’t show symptoms. So viruses spread even if ‘sick’ people stay home.

YABU to even have tested.
COVID in 2025 is very different to COVID of 2020- 5 years of mutation and de-escalation as is normal for new viruses.

That isn't the point. It's up to her whether she wants to test or not (and for some people COVID is still.deadly) the point is she is ill and infectious. So she shouldn't be passing it on whatever she has.
Btw I would also test as I like to know what I have. There is nothing unreasonable about it at all!

BlondeMummyto1 · 24/04/2025 10:07

Why do people even test!?

BlondeMummyto1 · 24/04/2025 10:08

PinataHeeHaw · 24/04/2025 07:26

I disagree. She has emailed to let them know she's unwell in good time and asked to reschedule. I'd think that was organised and give her a chance.

What a waste of their morning now though!

Lanzarotelady · 24/04/2025 10:08

NestOfWipers · 24/04/2025 09:59

Explain that to the people still dying from it

How many people are still dying from it?

RampantIvy · 24/04/2025 10:10

I see that there are still several covid deniers about. By that I mean that they are denying that for some members of the population covid has very serious implications. That one of them claims to be a health professional is depressing.

DH recently had surgery and the hospital wanted to know if he had been in contact with covid. Why would they do this if it wasn't relevant?

It's interesting that posters on this thread who conduct interviews are with the OP.

Covid has put my daughter, who has a life limiting condition, in ICU four times so far.

We test. In the winter when flu was rife we had some flu tests as well.

It means we know she needs to start the anti virals right away and we know what we're dealing with.

The current strain going round is brutal and knocking people off their feet.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter and I am sorry that there are so many selfish stupid people spreading Covid around because they're too stupid and selfish to test and stay home

I’m sorry you think that anyone who has moved on from Covid is ableist, ageist, selfish and more.

You go ahead and continue to test, wear a mask, worry about Covid, it makes no difference to me. I will continue to feel bad that you have been brainwashed by the mass hysteria and lies we’ve been told over the past few years.

I will continue to live my life trying to enjoy the freedoms we have, until they’re taken away again when the next pandemic hits. Good luck!

Most people with Covid are asynptomatic so won’t even know they’re spreading it 🤣

Livingthebestlife · 24/04/2025 10:12

I think you did right and as much as I despise the virus and all it took from me and some of the ridiculous things we did, unfortunately there are many, many vulnerable people.

Only last week my fil met up with an old friend, his daughter had COVID and told no one, they all sat in the car for over an hour together, she drove and collected them. Fil was admitted 4 days ago and tested positive for COVID.

While we're waiting to see if he pulls through the selfish woman just said it's only a virus and that she was grand, when we asked her why she knowingly sat in the car with a very vulnerable man and never said a word about having COVID , sometimes people need not to be selfish and knowingly pass on a virus , so you did right, you just don't know who's vulnerable. People can make their own choices and if someone doesn't mind being infected then that's great.

Sleepalldaylong · 24/04/2025 10:13

I agree that you won’t get the job as they will think you are flaky. The company will not believe you as it sounds like an excuse.

RampantIvy · 24/04/2025 10:14

Why are you so goady @Lanzarotelady ?

Covid is a big deal for some people.

It was just a bad cold when I had it, but not everyone is me, and I have the emotional intelligence to understand this, unlike you Hmm

.., hence the utility of testing.

And I don’t understand your logic about things like dengue being worse. Do you think people are delighted at the thought of contracting that?

I currently have covid people saying it's just a cold do you think this is just a cold and this is me having it mildly last time I was hospitalised for nearly a month

AIBU to cancel interview due to COVID?

Yes I have had it and I am a nurse ( worked in covid ICU ) I cannot remember the last time anyone was in ICU due to Covid - I have however recently nursed 2 people who came in with flu!

You are a nurse🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

You have a temperature, which your bodies response to fighting infection, be that rhino virus or corona virus

fairybower · 24/04/2025 10:17

Anyone with an asthmatic child or elderly family member - or who has neither but possesses basic common sense (now a rare commodity) - will be grateful you did not come in and knowingly infect the whole office or whatever.

You did the right thing by yourself, also, as showing up bleary-eyed and foggy-brained would do you no favours in showing your best self for the job.

What does taking your temperature tell you, does it make you feel better or worse, if it was normal, would that make you feel better?
