AIBU to cancel interview due to COVID?

Sexisthairdressers · 24/04/2025 07:21

I have a job interview this morning but have COVID. Didn't sleep. Work up feeling crap and did a test. Just emailed to cancel. Feel terrible that it's last minute and really want the job. Have asked to reschedule. Did I do the right thing? AIBU? For info, it was a 4 hour interview (tests etc then face to face interview - just don't think I could have got through it - quite apart from not wanting to infect everyone).

Of course this can happen but there is always a but what if it is …… If I could test for all those things I would, but I can’t, so I have to just use what I have at my disposal. If I can rule out one potential risk to my DM and the staff and children at work why on earth wouldn’t I do that? At least I have tried to lessen the risk. Surely that makes sense.

Because Covid is everywhere, we can’t avoid it we must live with it. And actually you testing and then - presumably - staying off work is putting the pressure on your colleagues to pick up the slack. Covid is no more than a cold for most people, so to keep testing is reinforcing the idea that it is a scary virus we need to fear constantly. Do you wear a mask too?

SloppyThePoodle · 24/04/2025 08:34

Yes. I had it last year and was housebound for four months with long covid. I'd be furious if someone wilfully exposed me to it again.

How would you know if you'd been exposed to it?
I don't know anyone who tests, so I would have no idea if I had it or not!

i often wonder in what circumstances people test

I test because an immediate family member has stage 4 cancer and the chemo and radio therapy has destroyed their immune system.

With a common cold or flu, I would have symptoms and stay away. When I last had COVID, I had no symptoms at all.

Lanzarotelady · 24/04/2025 08:40

Calliopespa · 24/04/2025 08:38

What would you like: my medical history and diary for the past six weeks?

One of them was wearing a mask, the other wasn’t. But they asked US to, which was my point - presumably to stop us bringing it in where they have vulnerable people. I assumed they had tested, hence the one not wearing one. And our GP said she tests because she has many patients who would be vulnerable.

ETA as a nurse I’m not sure why you would be encouraging people not to be careful? What is the reason for that? You don’t pay for their test kits.

You assumed!
Massive assumption there love.
I work in a department of over 200 staff - I am not aware of anyone testing.
Also in regards to a notice, it probably hasn't been taken down since Covid times.

I'd know because I'd see someone was ill, then I'd get covid again and be housebound for four months again, I guess. I'm just agreeing with the general pov that the op was sensible in cancelling her interview, and offering my perspective.

Nope. They directed us to the masks.

YABU to even have tested.
COVID in 2025 is very different to COVID of 2020- 5 years of mutation and de-escalation as is normal for new viruses.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s Covid, flu or just a seriously bad cold. I wouldn’t appreciate someone coming to an interview with something tbey could pass on to me.

I have a health condition affecting my immune system that means I qualify for anti virals if I get Covid. I test so that I don’t chance ending up in hospital. It’s not a walk in the park for many people still.

Exactly.

Before Covid that was standard common sense and courtesy.

You won't get the job. I'd think you were flaky OP.

Don’t be ridiculous

JustMyView13 · 24/04/2025 08:43

I’m firmly in the camp of people who’d be grateful you didn’t come in & give the office Covid.

I think the responses are largely split between those that see Covid as ‘just a cold’ (i accept it is for many!).
And those who understand that we exist amongst people who are less fortunate with their health, and that Covid can be life threatening for them.

For the record my view is the same for sickness bugs, although there’s often a split on those threads where people say the 48hr rule is BS.

Mumoftwo52 · 24/04/2025 08:44

Noseyoldcow · 24/04/2025 08:27

For those saying that covid these days is no big deal, I’d point out that the cash strapped NHS offered jabs to over 75s and clinically vulnerable this spring, on top of the jabs this autumn just passed. So covid IS still a big deal for some, and selfish gits who go out and about knowing, or suspecting they may have it, are helping to spread it, and they will maybe land some poor person in hospital or worse with it. OP was not at all unreasonable to postpone her interview, and I hope that she recovers soon and that this job or another works out well for her.

I thought the Covid bedwetters would be long gone 5 years on from the pandemic. Evidently not

PuppyMonkey · 24/04/2025 08:44

You’re simply not well enough to do the interview so you’ve cancelled. It is what it is. Either they can reschedule, do it online (if you’re up for that) or you’ve missed the boat OP, but either way I’d have done the same thing. It being covid you’ve got is a bit irrelevant I think tbh.

Doubt you'd have performed particularly well even if you hadn’t tested.

also Grin at “flaky.”

Icequeen01 · 24/04/2025 08:45

Mumoftwo52 · 24/04/2025 08:34

Don’t you think your 85 year old mother has been exposed to Covid a hundred times already? Unless she lives in an isolation chamber?

I’m sure she has. She has had all her Covid vaccinations and I test if I think I could have Covid and that is the best I can do for her. At least I can say I’ve tried rather than sit back and whine about why should I test. Did you also read my other post where I explained I work in a children’s home. We test if we feel we could have Covid to try and mitigate the nightmare of looking after unwell children when staff numbers are low due to absences. Of course we can’t test for everything but why not use a tool at your disposal if you have it to mitigate one risk? We are not asking for anyone’s permission to do this, this is what we do to be able to try and ensure we look after our children as best we can. It’s that simple.

It wouldn't be the cancelling that bothered me- I agree if you really are sick don't go.

But if they said they had tested and had COVID I would assume they have health anxiety and wouldn't employ them. It is the testing that is weird, people don't test for 'flu and that is much mor dangerous.

SoftPillow · 24/04/2025 08:46

Irrespective of what the illness is, you’re unwell, so rescheduling is the right thing to do as it’s a face to face interview. If it had been online I’d likely have powered through assuming I wasn’t bedbound.

Assuming it isn’t a fixed interview day they can hopefully find you another slot.

Things like this happen all the time. I would always give a candidate one reschedule opportunity if the process allowed it.

Of course she can't. Her repeated posts show that.

No, she isn't unreasonable. It was the responsible thing to do. She has no means of knowing whether one of the interviewers lives with someone particularly vulnerable.

To be honest I would actually test for the flu if I had a test.

Im not a ‘ Covid bedwetter” or any of the other immature names being flung about by people who find it inconvenient to be considerate. I’m just someone who prefers to know what I’m dealing with and understands from being close to situations where people have been seriously impacted that one person’s flu is another person’s serious illness. Why would I want to circulate it?

Rubbish. As an employer I would have been more disappointed if they had turned up with Covid.
