Subchrionic Hematoma

MyZippyLemonBiscuit · 21/04/2025 16:24

Can you tell me your experiences with a subchrionic hematoma?
Currently 11+4 and have had cramping and bleeding all day, going for a scan tomorrow morning. Was diagnosed with the hematoma at 9+1 following bleeding a week earlier (was further on than I thought). I also bled for 3 days post implantation which id mistaken for a period. I’d be due a period now and the last time so wondering if it’s something that’ll happen every month.
would love to hear stories of people who have experienced similar and have healthy babies now.

I had one in my first pregnancy- the baby is now 3 and sat beside me chattering about Paw Patrol.
I did have a pre-term delivery but that was due to the fact I had complications from gestational diabetes and unrelated to the hematoma.

Me, I had this. It was a very anxious pregnancy but he made it through and is now a teenager. Wishing you all the best. 💐

Thank you! Did you bleed often?

Yes, on and off through the whole pregnancy. I also injected heparin every day into my stomach. In fact I made my husband do the injections so that he shared the stress of it all. It was an anxious time but the relief that came when my son was born was huge. I wish you all the luck in the world.

When I was eleven weeks pregnant, after a very straightforward and comfortable pregnancy, I suddenly had a big gush of blood and very large blood clots, I was certain I was miscarrying. I went straight to emergency. After a few scary hours with me sure I'd lost my baby they did a scan and she was still there, strong heartbeat and no problems. It was diagnosed as a subchorionic hematoma that, I guess, just passed out. After that I had no more bleeding and no problems. She's now a healthy three year old.

MyZippyLemonBiscuit · 21/04/2025 19:05

thank you all for sharing your stories! Very reassuring. I was expecting more bleeding but it doesn’t stop the anxiety

I had one in my third pregnancy: baby is one and next to me right now refusing to go to sleep 🤨

TrixieFatell · 21/04/2025 19:20

When I was scanned with my first at around 17 weeks following a light bleed they found a subchorionic haematoma. They are now 19 years old. As a midwife I see lots of women who have these and go on to have healthy pregnancies. my friend had a number of bleeds throughout her pregnancy die to this too and her child was fine.

Everdecreasingcircumferences · 21/04/2025 19:22

17 years ago with my first at 10 weeks (after smaller bleeds at 6 and 8 weeks), big gush with huge clots. Horrible experience. DH was stuck at work, lovely friend came and sat with me for 5 hours in the early pregnancy unit waiting to be examined. Diagnosed with subchorionic haematoma and then a 2 day wait for a scan.
Baby was fine, had a couple of minor bleeds after that but nothing major. That little bean is now 6ft tall and studying for his GCSEs. Good luck OP.

turningpoints · 21/04/2025 19:25

Yes OP, I had this around the same time as you. It was scary. I think it went on for quite a few weeks. She was born full-term and now she's 17. I know quite a few people who had similar.

5en5uou5 · 21/04/2025 19:38

I had one too - she’s now 16 months old. Bleeding lasted a couple of weeks from 9-11 weeks, I believe. It was then monitored at my scans to check whether it had grown or not etc. It was so scary at the time, but disappeared over the months (can’t remember exactly when it went). Wishing you all the very best.

Nibblonian · 21/04/2025 19:50

I had one with my youngest who is now three. I had a miscarriage shortly before becoming pregnant with him and had needed two procedures to clear it. Sonographers mentioned the possible scarring to my uterus from that may have contributed to the SCH developing.

I did have a few bleeds, some old looking and some bright red, so it was an anxious pregnancy. Not helped by other pregnancy related issues that weren't due to the SCH.

All worked out fine in the end and the SCH was barely visible on the 20 week scan.

Fizzysticks · 21/04/2025 19:56

After very heavy bleeding I was told I had a large one measuring 7cm by 5cm and warned that the pregnancy was unlikely to progress due to the bleed being ontop of the baby. However, they were wrong and I have a very healthy 18 month old now 😊 I had several scans before 12 weeks and by 14 weeks it was completely gone. I did go on to have placenta previa and baby was ultimately born at 35 weeks due to bleeding but told it was unconnected to the subchronic hematoma. Wishing you all the best and try not to worry too much.

mmgirish · 21/04/2025 21:29

I had one in my first pregnancy at around 11 weeks I think. My obgyn said that it was measuring bigger than the baby. I was signed off work for 2 weeks bed rest. I was given meds (I can’t remember what) to stop my uterus from contracting. The dr’s main advice was bed rest to protect the baby. Edit to say - bed rest worked and my son is now 13!

MyZippyLemonBiscuit · 21/04/2025 21:46

You’ve all made my day will post an update tomorrow after scan 🤞🏼

In case more positive stories are reassuring for you: I had one at 7 weeks. I bled for ages, and huge clots too - I was positive I was miscarrying, but a scan at EPU showed all was fine. I bled again at 8 and 10 weeks but again all was fine and scans each time showed the hematoma was getting smaller. It was such a worrying time but the baby is now two and a half and all was fine!

Eenameenadeeka · 22/04/2025 01:12

Hi, this happened to me as well. Started at 11 weeks, was terrifying lots of bright red blood. I had a scan the following day that showed baby was still alive and well. The SCH was on the opposite side from the placenta which they said was very good. By my 12 week scan, it was hardly noticeable on the scan, but I continued with bleeding on and off for over a month. (Stressful every time I know)
I had some other complications in the pregnancy, so not entirely sure the specific cause but I did have him prematurely. (31 weeks) He is a very happy and healthy 2 year old.

Fizzysticks · 22/04/2025 07:26

Also, I was prescribed progesterone to help thicken the uterus wall. I would definitely ask for this, if it’s not offered. I also went on bed rest, and completely pelvic rest

Had my scan at 11, baby fine, the bleed has got slightly smaller since the last time but not by much. Think it may just be something I experience now and then. They weren’t concerned at all though, thanks for all your stories x
(I had posted this yesterday on the wrong thread 🙈)

Yes I had this, horribly stressful. Heavy bleeding from around 11-25 weeks, which definitely worsened the busier I was so try to physically relax as much as possible (I found this tricky as it was my fourth child and I was working too). He’s 7 now though and completely fine. Good luck, have everything crossed for you!

Lostcat · 23/04/2025 07:30

Fantastic new OP. Hopefully it just resolves quietly by itself. Wishing you a healthy, peaceful rest of pregnancy xxx

This is my 4th as well so I’m also finding it difficult to take it easy as everyone keeps suggesting! Glad to hear it all worked out though. I have a feeling this is going to start clearing up soon 🤞🏼

Ah your fourth too - I really struggled to contain the eye roll when well meaning people would tell me to just rest and stay in bed! Even with lovely DH taking on the bulk of everything, it’s just not possible to stay in bed when you have three other kids (all very young at the time in my case) and a job!

The bleeding was such a shock to me after three completely straightforward pregnancies and births. I spent the entire time terrified that even if baby survived, there’d be some longer term issues - how could it not impact him, when there was so much blood loss?! But he’s completely fine and the other stories here should hopefully reassure you. Mumsnet was a big help to me at that time, so do post again if you have any worries (not at the expense of medical advice of course - just to vent if needed!).

💐

This is how I found out I was having twins! Bleeding and cramping at 9 weeks - really scary. All was well. The bleeding did continue for a few weeks but the haematoma disappeared by 14 weeks. Best of luck with your pregnancy 🥰
