Subchrionic Hematoma

Can you tell me your experiences with a subchrionic hematoma?
Currently 11+4 and have had cramping and bleeding all day, going for a scan tomorrow morning. Was diagnosed with the hematoma at 9+1 following bleeding a week earlier (was further on than I thought). I also bled for 3 days post implantation which id mistaken for a period. I’d be due a period now and the last time so wondering if it’s something that’ll happen every month.
would love to hear stories of people who have experienced similar and have healthy babies now.

When I was eleven weeks pregnant, after a very straightforward and comfortable pregnancy, I suddenly had a big gush of blood and very large blood clots, I was certain I was miscarrying. I went straight to emergency. After a few scary hours with me sure I'd lost my baby they did a scan and she was still there, strong heartbeat and no problems. It was diagnosed as a subchorionic hematoma that, I guess, just passed out. After that I had no more bleeding and no problems. She's now a healthy three year old.

this was close to my experience, but a twin pregnancy. my children are now 20.

Sorry for TMI everyone but I need a bit of reassurance, after my scan on Tuesday I had brown discharge/ old blood, it stopped, fine. Today I’ve had another massive gush of bright red blood, which is still going, I’m not in pain though. The hospital said just to monitor it. I don’t even know what that means?

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear. Who in the hospital did you speak with? Was it someone who knows about the haematoma?

As per my note above, I bled from 11-25ish weeks and it was heavy, daily bleeding, with the odd 2-3 day period in between of brown/dry blood. I still did the hospital dash on many occasions, even though I was almost used to it, when it felt particularly heavy or just different. I suppose what I’m trying to say is that we can’t properly advise you at all here and that if it doesn’t feel right you should go to hospital and ask to be scanned and/or monitored there.

From what you’re saying, I’d get it checked out, there’s no risk in doing so but potentially some risk in not - even if the risk is just driving yourself mad worrying. Good luck, hope it settles soon 💐

It was the woman and children ward as the early pregnancy unit is shut from 2.30pm, I did explain the situation and that I’d just been in on Tuesday. When you say heavy, were you soaking through pads? I was driving there when it started and it was like a pool of blood lying on my thighs. I haven’t had it this heavy before, the gushes are getting lighter though.
Im going to give them a call in an hour or so if it hasn’t settled the way it normally does. I should be used to it by now but it’s always a shock to the system!

@MyZippyLemonBiscuit yes, soaking through pads. Literally pouring (sorry TMI), completely terrifying. I’d go to A+E and ask for a scan if you don’t get anywhere with the woman and children ward.

That’s so reassuring, I’m at the ward just now waiting to be seen 🤞🏼 I just couldn’t go to bed tonight not knowing everything’s ok

@MyZippyLemonBiscuit you're right to get it checked. Let us know how you get on.

Yes, I had the same full on gushing blood with clots. I was told that I had to wait a week between scans though

MyZippyLemonBiscuit · 25/04/2025 21:35

I had a speculum exam, my cervix is closed. He said he couldn’t see active bleeding which I don’t quite understand considering I was covered in it!
I have a UTI and I’ve to go back tomorrow morning for another scan. He said the hematoma was only 2cm by 7mm at the last scan so couldn’t understand why there was so much blood.

I ended up having a totally different problem but the midwife did tell me some women have breakthrough bleeding when their period would have been due.

I also read alot about SH with frequent bleeds and most were sucessful pregnancies.

I hope your scan goes well tomorrow. I know how anxious you must be ❤️

I had one with my second child. Pregnancy was OK after a lot of heavy bright red bleeding in the early weeks. After an emergency c-section with my first I had to have a second c-section because the baby was so big. I then had a massive post-partum hemorrhage. Baby very well and after some transfusions I was fine. Never life-threatening, though a hysterectomy was on the cards at one point. But I was advised not to have any more children, and the consultant said that there is a link between subchorionic hematomas and hemorrhaging during birth. But I’m guessing if this is your fourth that you’re an old pro at that, and this might well be planned as the last child anyway!

Welll went for my scan at 9. Baby was wriggling away! ❤️ no sign of the hematoma so fingers crossed that’s it made its way out and it’ll start to resolve now. The sonographer did say “you had quite a large area of bleeding last time didn’t you?” Although the doctor told me last night it was only 2cm by 7mm so didn’t think it was that big, but the blood loss defo suggests otherwise. So I’m relieved anyway and all seems well thanks for all the kind words and support x

I had a big one in my first pregnancy. I was given meds some to stop any uterine contractions and another I can’t remember. I was also on very strict bed rest for at least 2 weeks. All it worked out thank God. Rest. Take care of yourself.
