Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

This is just a rehash of the toilet brush thing. People aren't getting sick from this, people just don't like the idea of it.

I think you’ve forgotten on Mumsnet we don’t have toilet brushes because we don’t skid 😰

actually I don’t have a toilet brush. It’s dh job to clean the bathroom lucky me lol

AlexisP90 · 21/04/2025 17:10

It's grim but I don't think it would bother me.

If I did this, which I don't (don't have a dog) I probably wouldn't do it in front of guest

ScarlettOYara · 21/04/2025 17:04

No, because the minute you handled the items, put them on the counter, put them in the cupboard etc they would no longer be sterile.

Forgive me, I can decide if you're agreeing with me or not. 😃

Mothership4two · 21/04/2025 17:10

It's quite possible to understand (and practise) the concept of targeted hygiene and still find the thought of dogs licking human plates unpleasant. The human brain is pretty good at that kind of thing.

SatsumaDog · 21/04/2025 17:11

Personally, I think it’s gross and wouldn’t eat in your house. That’s a visceral reaction though and my rational brain says once they have been through the dishwasher they will be clean. I still think it’s vile though.

PLHJ84 · 21/04/2025 17:12

I’m with you dil on this one - it’s gross.

i love dogs and when ours was alive he would occasionally lick a plate if it was left out but we didn’t do it routinely. It wasn’t al the time & was the “every day” plates which only me or my husband would have ate off of so not our kids or guests & that was my own dog so “our germs” which i know is a daft way to look at it but i wouldn’t let a random dog lick me!

i could go to someones house and they do this and be none the wiser but to actually witness it to that extent where it’s all plates etc then i wouldn’t be able to eat there again as i’d be so disgusted and i’d question other hygiene habits such as washing hands / food.

Lol
rubbish
my dog cannot reach her arse
she’s not overweight, just a breed thing

frenchie?

Zone2NorthLondon · 21/04/2025 17:10

I’m making a factual observation about dishwasher
I agree we need dirt and flora. Don’t need to see the fur baby slobbering the plates at a meal with guests
Plates cease to be sterile when handled, put in cupboards and stored

Oh I see what you mean - sorry. Yes, you were making a distinction. I thought you were saying they needed to be sterile, sorry.

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 17:12

It's even more gross that the OP says that the dog has "pre washed" the plates.

Eh no. Your dog has just added loads of bacteria

blueleavesgreensky · 21/04/2025 17:06

The plates will be cleaner than pretty much everything else you come across in your day to day life. So you’d better start freaking out about existing.

I agree. I worked in a supermarket years ago and the boys who worked on the meat counter and bakery counter were notorious for not washing their hands after using the toilet. Nobody who worked in the supermarket bought from the fresh counters for this reason, and in the cafe they would take out the grimy rubbish and just went back to serving food without washing their hands.

There are worse things than a dog licking your plate!

OuchyEars · 21/04/2025 17:12

frenchie?

Or pug. I had a pug owner tell me that they are not capable of reaching their own arse.

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 17:13

Lots of things are gross without being the least bit dangerous, how is this so hard to understand? A taxi driver doing a stinky fart would be gross, but not dangerous. A waiter picking their nose and wiping their finger on a Clinell wipe ditto. Dogs licking humans' plates ditto.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 21/04/2025 17:13

Nothing wrong with it but then I happily share my spoon or fork with my dogs.

Nobody in my household is ever sick.

Tulippilut · 21/04/2025 17:13

If we look at it realistically …

We go to restaurants and put cutlery in our mouth without knowing whose mouth it’s been in and what has been in that mouth ! Same as at home . We don’t have our set cutlery .

So , I don’t think it’s “ disgusting “ or as dramatic as your daughter made it . It’s going into a dishwasher . But - personally , I wouldn’t like to see it. It probably would put me off if I saw it . The idea of every plate being licked would make me feel a bit icky . If i found out it happened and didn’t see it then maybe it wouldn’t be as bad .

I wouldn’t ever let my dog do that - for a start , I don’t have a dishwasher , so hand wash , but I wouldn’t let him lick every plate , I would just feel that it’s kind of behaviour I wouldn’t want my dog to get into , we put leftovers in a bowl for him but I want him to know our plates are off limits ( we never feed him from our plate ) .

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 21/04/2025 17:13

Whether she thinks it's grim or not her hissy fit was unnecessary and rude. She could just have made a mental note to make an excuse around food next time, but instead she threw a temper tantrum and was disrespectful to the op

Livelovebehappy · 21/04/2025 17:14

If we overthink things too much, what about things such as door handles, your food shop, cafe and restaurant condiments etc - we have no idea who’s touched these things before us. Could have been a random person who hasn’t washed their hands after wiping their bums, so has transferred faeces or similar onto a surface that we then touch. I read somewhere that door handles have more germs on them than a toilet seat. I think the fact the OP announced it to her guests is the problem here, otherwise they would have been happily oblivious to it.

So did you when you put the cutlery in your mouth.. or licked the plate (I know some people do).

Fidgety31 · 21/04/2025 17:14

My dog licks my plates , saucepans etc
they all get washed afterwards . Now I have a dishwasher I even put his bowls and the cat bowls in with my dishes !
never occurred to me that some might think this is gross !

Yes, there was a baker when I worked in Tesco who was always adjacent to the right side of hygiene. No one I spoke to who worked in that store would buy in-store bakery produce. I also saw a butcher leaving the washroom without washing their hands and it made me feel rather queasy.

its ok, we were all sat here bored and now some of us have something to kick off about.....you have done a public service OP

Just leaving for 6:00pm Mass now - only a short way from us. Must confess am totally insulted that you think that I should stay on MN to prevent you from becoming bored rather than pray for the soul of a very humble man who was an example to us all. No apologies am going to my devotions now.

UndermyShoeJoe · 21/04/2025 17:15

Yes I agree there. I would have just made excuses in future to not eat or drink at your house. Though one of the children might of told on me at some point.

Same as I don’t have dinner at a family members because their cooking is dire.

doodleschnoodle · 21/04/2025 17:15

Dog prewash cycle!

It would be gross if it wasn’t then being washed. But it is. So it’s just an ‘I don’t like it even though logically there’s nothing wrong with it’ thing.

DancyNancy · 21/04/2025 17:16

My dog always licks the stuff in the dishwasher while we're loading it.
We call him the pre rinse.
Haven't died yet

I bet the Pope would disapprove of your disgusting habit!! 🐕 🍽

no because it would trash my undies......I mean have SOME sense!

Good point.

The correct procedure is to ensure separation from the knives and forks. As in the Miele dishwasher manual - precisely lined-up knives, forks and spoons, all separate, and orderly. One’s dirty knickers go at the back, in the section provided. You really should read the manual.
