Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

OMG the hypocrisy!

"I couldn't possibly eat off a plate that a dog had licked, before it was washed at 90 degrees, however, I have no problem licking my husband's penis"

OOOOKKKAAAAYYYY.

Not after he's used it to clean his and other people's bums, rubbed it in (any old) poo, meat and insects and generally stuck it in some pretty unsavoury places. I have my standards.

Errm... yes it does. All dogs do.

Dogs eat absolutely disgusting stuff. I've seen my dog lick other dogs asses. I've seen my dog kill and half eat a dead mouse.

There is no way in he'll I'd let my dog lick a plate that I'm going to eat off.

What you did is disgusting OP

Ha ha!

But I don’t believe the OP was suggesting other guests should jointly lick all penises present.

At least I don’t think it was that kind of party.

Those parties are only on Thursdays.

Oops! 😀

Dishwasher sanitises eg cleans but does NOT sterilize
Dishwasher Doesn't reach high enough temperature for sterilisation

Bonniethetiler · 21/04/2025 17:02

You have to love Mumsnet...people freaking out because a dog licked a plate which then goes into a hot dishwasher, and yet when it comes to threads about laundry it seems the vast majority of folks are washing full loads of sweaty clothes at under 30'C on a 20 minute cycle.

There is no middle-ground and even less understanding.

Some of you seriously need to start reading up on "targeted hygiene" and why it is needed in conjunction with a balanced lifestyle so as to keep our immune systems working.

CautiousLurker01 · 21/04/2025 17:02

So our dogs constantly try to lick the plates as we stack the dishwasher. We don’t allow them because, yes it would be bloody grim if they did it in front of guests but mainly because human food is potentially dangerous - ie TOXIC - to dogs. Onion powder in gravy and sauces, for example?

So, no. Absolutely do not allow our dogs to lick plates ever. If they are good, once everyone has left the table and the debris is cleared away, we may do treat training with left over steak/sausage/bacon etc as a reward for not begging.

Just as well. If everything was sterilized we'd all be incredibly sick as there'd be nothing left to keep our immune systems on their toes.

Lol
rubbish
my dog cannot reach her arse
she’s not overweight, just a breed thing

FishfingerFlinger · 21/04/2025 17:04

I think YANBU to think there’s no actual hygiene issue but YABU to let the dog do this in front of guests.

Similarly I will admonish our cats for jumping on the table when we have visitors but when we don’t have company they have free rein.

Oneapenny2 · 21/04/2025 17:04

I read this and will answer according to my first reaction which was EWW!!! so my answer is YABU. I have nothing against dogs, they are brilliant companions but the idea of a dog licking dinner plates is socially unacceptable & taking it too far.

No, because the minute you handled the items, put them on the counter, put them in the cupboard etc they would no longer be sterile.

Astrabees · 21/04/2025 17:05

This wouldn’t bother me one tiny bit. I probably wouldn’t do it in front of visitors just in case they were illogical sanitary freaks, like some on here. I am very concerned that some who do have dishwashers don’t use them for pet bowls, these need to be cleaned to a high standard too and a quick swoosh under the tap isn’t good enough.
my two dogs total less than 8 kg between them and don’t shed hair. No doggy smells in my house.

As a dog lover and owner, I’m shocked that 33% think it’s not unreasonable to let the dog lick the plates 🤢

No, they don't.

redboxer321 · 21/04/2025 17:06

I wouldn't let my dog lick the plates because human leftovers are generally not very good for dogs. She's also not very interested in what I eat either.
If I did, I'd swill them, then put them in the dishwasher.
DIL massively overreacted.

Martymcfly24 · 21/04/2025 15:16

Disgusting.

Could not eat in your house ever again .

The plates will be cleaner than pretty much everything else you come across in your day to day life. So you’d better start freaking out about existing.

As a dog owner you should realise their butts and paws and slobber are everywhere and those plates will be the cleanest thing in your house when they come out of the dishwasher

ScarlettOYara · 21/04/2025 16:59

Mine only goes up to 60°c. That's not going to sterilize.

Mine does 70 but I use 65. However, as I just mentioned in a message above, to have everything sterilized in a domestic environment would be very bad for our immune systems. Washing in a machine is way, way more hygienic than by hand, even more so than when washing up is dried with a cloth.

I don't get hung up about irradiating germs from my life, but I work hard to minimise the opportunities for transfer and growth. I'll trust in the 65'C setting on my dishwasher fully, but I will not have wet sponges, tea-towels, face-cloths etc hanging around the house to grow germs on, like many people do.

MyOliveCritic · 21/04/2025 17:08

Gundogday · 21/04/2025 15:39

I wouldn’t give the plate to my dog to lick, but any lab owner knows that a lab will race to the dishwater to see what s/he can lick before you shut the door closed.

Absolutely this ! We had a lab just like that. Wouldn’t deliberately give her a plate but she would hang around the dishwasher and take any opportunity!

Tended to keep her out of the kitchen when guests were around tbh.

HangingOver · 21/04/2025 17:08

This is just a rehash of the toilet brush thing. People aren't getting sick from this, people just don't like the idea of it.

LittleWeasel · 21/04/2025 17:09

Personally, I think it’s grossly unhygienic.

My In-laws do this - all the leftover Sunday roast is scraped onto one of the plates and put down on the floor for their pooch to eat off off. Then the plates are washed in the sink in lukewarm water.

I got ill on a visit. It started with vomiting, then eggy-burps and finally eggy farts, by this point I realised that their pooch was also emitting eggy smells. I kept quiet about where I thought my illness came but the next time MIL or SIL make a snide comment about lack of dusting in my house or similar I’m going to tell them that at least I don’t make people ill because I feed the dog off dinner plates!

I dread to think what parasite or microbe is lurking in my gut that comes from their dog!

OuchyEars · 21/04/2025 17:09

This is one of those things that is logically fine but you're best not to do in front of other people unless you're sure they're fine with it. I am surprised you didn't already know she might be iffy with it. How long have they been together? Sons can be a bit useless at noticing and giving a heads up for potential friction spots, so you have my sympathy.
There are a lot of places I don't like dogs licking but none of them go in the dishwasher before I touch them again.

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 16:53

Do you lick your husband's penis in front of guests?

I don’t understand.

Doesn't everybody do that?

🤷🏻

I’m making a factual observation about dishwasher
I agree we need dirt and flora. Don’t need to see the fur baby slobbering the plates at a meal with guests
Plates cease to be sterile when handled, put in cupboards and stored
