Dig licking plates before going into dishwasher - ick or not

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:11

Have have hosted a lovely Easter BH Monday for all 7 GC, 3 step children, partners & children. We had an Easter egg hunt in garden, had breakfast in local farm shop & walked my lovely little dog around, petted animals etc.

For context I need to say that DSS & DIL are both British, but live in USA.

After a roast dinner I put the plates & general pots & pans down for the dog to lick. My DIL lost the plot saying that was so unhygienic I assured her that they would be going into the dishwasher on a high temperature - about 90c so would be sterilised. I always let the dog pre-wash my plates as consider it's going into the dishwasher at high temp to be sterilised so no problem.

DIL saying she will never let her children eat at my house again & gone-taken her DH & DC off in an huff.

DH has had a text from his son apologising but saying what can he do as has to support his wife. I totally get that. But....

My question is - is it OK to let dog lick out the plates etc when they are going into dishwasher at a high temp? WWUD?

No because I can’t wash my mattress? Ridiculous comparison 😂

Ah, so that's the only reason?

UndermyShoeJoe · 21/04/2025 16:46

Thing is the argument the dish washer cleans it doesn’t change the visual.

I wouldn’t want to actually watch my chef have a poo then cook for me even if he did wash his hands.

Dog lick plates are the same. Yes they might get cleaned but the visual is there.

Smallmercies · 21/04/2025 16:47

Do you bogans wipe your bums on your towels to save on toilet paper?

@Happyspendingthedayinthegarden That's absolutely disgusting OP.

You cannot "sterilise" cutlery in a dishwasher.

Cutlery has been in other people's mouths. Do you not trust your dishwasher to clean properly?

Mothership4two · 21/04/2025 16:47

Most people quite clearly understand what a dishwasher does. Do people not understand that we all have personal mores and dos and don'ts? It's the thought of it that is off-putting.

Zone2NorthLondon · 21/04/2025 16:47

Minging, I’d think you’re unhygienic skank and wouldn’t visit again
If that’s you on in front of guests, being nice and all, shudder to think of your filthy habits when relaxed

Other people's mouths have not been eating shit!

IridiumSky · 21/04/2025 16:47

Bacteriologically totally fine.

But socially? Awful.

Would you put your dirty knickers in the dishwasher with the cutlery? Equally fine, as all would come out sterile.

You might lose a few dinner guests though.🙄

Other people's mouths have not been eating shit!

Do you know that? For sure?

And most dogs don't eat shit. the ones that do tend to have some sort of deficiency.

Rklap · 21/04/2025 16:48

It depends. I do let my dog lick plates sometimes, but he's small and isn't off lead sticking his nose in loads of shite.

However, just doing it in front of visitors is a no no.

Erm sorry to disappoint there but there is a whole fetish around that 😬😬

ooo cool! wish i had known this YEARS ago!

My friends absolutely know I do this and I regularly have 20+ for dinner.

Grim. My understanding is that the DW is NOT hot enough to kill dog germs.
I love dogs. I would never do this.

I didn't realise that 'dog germs' were more resistant to high temperatures than ordinary germs such as salmonella.

I must update my microbiology knowledge.

You do you

shuggles · 21/04/2025 16:48

@Fgdvevfvdvfbdv He licks our faces anyway so it makes no difference to us!

You can wash your face.

I'm sure that no one would let their dog lick the inside of their mouth, or willingly consume dog saliva.

So many sweet summer children on this thread.

ohdearohnooh · 21/04/2025 16:49

Absolutely rank. We went to stay with friends 20 years ago who did this in front of us. I nearly threw up, it’s so disgusting and dreadful hosting to do this in front of guests. Have never forgotten it and never went back .

Xis · 21/04/2025 16:49

GroupDiscountOnTheBusToHell
Our dog bowls get washed in the sink with their own separate scrubber and are dried with paper towels.

Hopefully the utility room sink, or even better, the outside sink, or I can see a different set of problems. (Cross-contamination)

Hey, I don't judge. I just hope you don't share your toothbrush with anyone.

dammit, was thinking i could have avoided hosting a shedload of dinners.

It’s really grim. The thing is, people with dogs just don’t see what those of us without dogs see. When I look at your dog all I see is dirt, slobber and hair. When you look at your dog you see cute little furry member of the family.

The dishwasher will most likely kill any doggy germs but I don’t want to see your dog licking the dishes I’m expected to eat from.

Just apologise, swear blind you’ll never let dog do it again and just let your dog lick the dishes when you don’t have guests.

I completely agree. Many dog owners do think of their dogs as a member of the family and not an animal. To me, it is totally and utterly foreign to allow animals to use the same crockery as people, even if you are going to wash them straight after.

Like I said, no boundaries.

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/04/2025 16:05

Doggy pre-wash here too - we never have to soak stuff or send it round again, the dogs remove the traces of food, the dishwasher removes any traces of dog. Perfect solution.

Don't like it, don't eat at my house.

I totally appreciate your ‘don’t like it, don’t eat at my house’ but I want to know how I know you (or anyone) would do this in the first place. I suppose the OP thought it was okay to do in front of guests so they know but many have said that they do this but not in front of guests.

UpsideDownChairs · 21/04/2025 16:50

Wouldn't bother me. If none of the cat bowls are clean (or if I've left them out for the chickens to eat the leftovers, and it's raining so I don't want to go out and get them) I just use our little plates, and I use whatever fork comes to hand if they're eating tinned food.

My mum used to have a special cat fork - but I was once giving the cats some cat pate, and on the walk back across to the kitchen to put the fork in the dishwasher, absent-mindedly licked the fork. The stuff tasted fine TBH, so I stopped bothering with special cat-only cutlery figuring it was pointless too, since their food is as good as mine.

Having said that - wasn't it on here I heard about people putting their toilet brush through the dishwasher? And sex toys? I do draw the line there - I realise it sterilises basically, but still, it's the thought - so I'm clearly illogical.

shuggles · 21/04/2025 16:50

@EmmaWoodhouseOfHighbury I must update my microbiology knowledge.

It sounds like you have a lot to learn about microbiology if you weren't aware that sterilisation with moist heat requires temperatures of 120 C and above.
