Parking - would you talk to neighbour or live with it?

Currently put up with it for a few months but we’ve just had the driveway redone and I think it’s made it even harder to get off the drive due to two parked cars on the road.

No parking restrictions. Cul de sac. Not new housing so plenty of parking but house opposite is rented and has four people - three cars. House next door has the son’s girlfriend who stays every weekend. These cars are only ever there Friday night/Saturday/Sunday/Monday morning.

I’m the pink car and reversing off the driveway and heading towards the adjoining road is impossible. I can pull out and go up the road and turn around at the end and come back. Can’t reverse into the space as there’s not the turning room.

Would you go talk to the house opposite and see if they would park further up the road which wouldn’t be directly outside their house or would you leave it and hope they’re on a short term rent?

If you can reverse off, you can reverse on.

MidnightPatrol · 19/04/2025 15:08

Even if you ask them to park elsewhere, someone else might park in that space.

You need to practice your manoeuvres. I’m pretty sure you could reverse into the space.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/04/2025 15:15

To reverse into the space id have to reverse up the road which would make no sense. I may as well reverse out and turn around at the end of the cul de sac. It’s not a wide road. No one else generally parks on the road.

Not clear which way is the cul de sac.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/04/2025 15:18

End of cul de sac runs off at the bottom of the picture. Adjoining road out the street is at the top of the picture.

Park in the space yourself.

AutumnLeaves24 · 19/04/2025 15:21

I'm not 100% clear but are you complaining at having to turn left out of your driveway and go around the cul-de-sac? So you effectively going right out of your driveway to get to the other road?

if that's correct, how far exactly is the end of the road/the cul-de-sac?

Redpeach · 19/04/2025 15:22

Isn't it just part and parcel of parking in a street with other humans?

Boatsandtrains · 19/04/2025 15:23

Oh this is annoying, but I’d be tempted to leave it and not risk causing a row.

Out of all the cars they have, is there one that’s smaller and doesn’t cause as much of an issue? E.g. they’re currently parking a van there but could swap it for a mini. If so, I might ask for this.

That’s what I’m wondering. Hence I’ve done nothing for months.

Yes. For sure.

Yes that’s right. Instead of reversing out and leaving the direction I want to go I’m going to have to go the wrong way and turn around at the end. I’m not sure how far it is. A detour of a minute probably.

Depends on your relationship with your neighbours and how reasonable and understanding they are.
If they’re the type of ‘I can park where I want’ people, then I’d say nothing as they may look at ways to be more annoying. But if you think they would be fine to be asked, do it.

DenholmElliot11 · 19/04/2025 15:29

Honestly i'd just live with it.

This country is overcrowded and parking issues aren't going anywhere. We're just gonna have to live with them.

steelingmyself · 19/04/2025 15:29

I live on a road with this set up! (Not the number of people but, this is how the cars look!) When we first moved I used to just park somewhere else but over time I’ve started reversing into the drive. It’s tight, and annoying, but can be done if your diagram is the way it looks to me 😂

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/04/2025 15:30

We’ve had it before to be honest as it’s a rented house and people have differing amounts of vehicles. I think it’s these cars parking in unison that’s making it an absolute ball ache.

OP posts:
Trickabrick · 19/04/2025 15:45

For the sake of an extra minute I’d not say anything. I’d also reverse into the drive regardless of if it was more tricky as it’s a safer maneouvre overall.

meganorks · 19/04/2025 15:46

No I wouldn't say anything. They are free to park there. I think you need to practice reversing on though because there is no reason it can't be done from looking at your pic. And if you really can't do it, turning at the end is hardly that bad! I'm sure that's what everyone without drives is doing anyway.

Redpeach · 19/04/2025 15:47

Or change how we live

Gymmum82 · 19/04/2025 15:48

I’d just reverse on to my drive then I could drive off in either direction

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/04/2025 15:55

It’s not about ‘not’ being able to do it. It’s that it would make no no sense to attempt it as it would involve a three point turn on a pretty narrow road or it would involve me reversing down a road which is no safer than just reversing off and turning around at the end.

OP posts:
MathsMum3 · 19/04/2025 15:57

I'd leave it if I were you. Might seem a bit petty to ask neighbours to inconvenience themselves slightly by parking up the road a little, to save you the small inconvenience of having to turn at the end of the cul-de-sac.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/04/2025 15:59

I don’t have the turning circle to be able to overshoot my drive and then reverse in if that what everyone thinks is the solution as the proximity of the parked car won’t allow me to turn the car in that area and we now have lights running up that side of the driveway which I can’t run over 🤦🏻‍♀️

To be honest it’s my preferred answer as while I can deal with confrontation if it comes my way I’m not a fan of causing it.

OP posts:
SquirrelRed · 19/04/2025 16:03

I would leave it. I'm not sure why you think they shouldn't be able to park directly outside their house in order for you to save 60 seconds of your time?
