Noisy DIY on Good Friday

Thehappystitcher69 · 18/04/2025 16:16

I’m not a particularly religious person but I do respect the beliefs and values from all those with a faith. I know from Christian friends that Good Friday is an extremely reflective and somewhat sombre day.
So… do you think it’s reasonable for a neighbour to be carrying out some really noisy DIY today? I’m not talking about the odd tap where some pictures are being hung, but heavy power tools on adjoining walls in a terraced house.
I don’t think it’s fair. AIBU

I’m Catholic.. I would care.

We have Mass at 3 - we don’t self-flagellate all day

LuckysDadsHat · 18/04/2025 16:18

It is a 4 day weekend for a lot of people, so it's the time they get diy and gardening done. Always has been.

I think you are being a tad unreasonable, especially as you are not even a Christian.

nonmerci99 · 18/04/2025 16:21

As a Catholic, I think YABU.

Radionowhere · 18/04/2025 16:23

It's a bank holiday OP. Presumably B&Q is rammed. YABU.

Staceysmum2025 · 18/04/2025 16:23

I agree with you bank holidays used to be restful. Everyone needs a break

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 18/04/2025 16:25

DIY is just what the irreligious do over Easter. Its not like church services take place in suburban semis.

I'm also RC & looking forward to fish & chips this evening after Good Friday liturgy service as only had a frugal breakfast & lunch it being a day of fasting & reflection.

However, wouldn't bother me neighbours doing DIY on (what is probably) one of the few weekends when they have several days in a row to complete whatever task needs to be done.

DH & me have forgone flagellation for the day - too much like fun 😗😂

Hatty65 · 18/04/2025 16:27

I'd be slightly pissed off at all day noise - not because of being Christian, but because I was looking forward to a 4 day weekend.

On the other hand, bank holidays tend to be the time people get to decorate, garden, do DIY.

Provided I wasn't listening to 4 solid days of power tools I don't think it's unreasonable.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/04/2025 16:28

It's a bank holiday, time to get things done you can't when working.

DiscoBeat · 18/04/2025 16:28

I'm not religious but I'd be mindful of people wishing to enjoy their gardens for possibly the first time this year. But then I can do it any time and perhaps they can't.

Gloriia · 18/04/2025 16:30

As long as they aren't doing DIY in the church where Masses are being held I can't see a problem. People do their faith stuff in particular dedicated venues ime, once at home it is DIY and barbecues.

ExtraOnions · 18/04/2025 16:39

Maybe they are building a Cross, and planning an amateur retelling of The Passion.

Magnastorm · 18/04/2025 16:41

The number of people who actually give a shit about good friday beyond it being a day off and that hot cross buns are back in the shops is tiny.

YABU. People are entitled to do a bit of DIY if they want.

Thehappystitcher69 · 18/04/2025 16:45

Points taken - but maybe it isn’t even just to do with religion. More the fact that some of us need a bit of a rest on the days off.
Good luck to those who have got the energy for DIY though. I’m obviously in the wrong job. 🤔

I've done loads of noisy work in the garden today (banging stones etc)..didn't even cross my mind that it was good Friday. It's just the only day me and my husband are both off work to do the house jobs. Will probably do the same on Sunday and Monday too!

JohnTheRevelator · 18/04/2025 16:49

This is why I thank my lucky stars that my DIY obsessed neighbours have moved. Every single Saturday, Sunday and Bank holiday was a DIY fest for them, from 7 in the morning until midnight.

austroemo · 18/04/2025 17:01

YABU.
It's a Bank Holiday and for probably the majority of people it has no meaning beyond that.
Christians can go to church for services if they wish where they can reflect and it will be quiet (eg. probably no organ music and in the case of the Catholics, no consecration just distribution of consecrated hosts).

I live in Austria which is a Catholic country. Good Friday isn't even a Bank Holiday here. Services are held in the evening rather than at 3pm like they are in the UK so that people who have been at work can go.

Germany is a different matter. It is a "stiller Feiertag" where there are lots of rules such as no sporting events, no dancing etc in addition to the normal Bank Holiday rules about noise (no use of loud machinery etc).

The UK doesn't have those rules and that's why I think YABU even though I'm a Catholic. The noisy DIY is really annoying but they aren't breaking any laws.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/04/2025 17:07

Yeah I don’t think religious Christians (genuine ones) would be bothered about a bit of DIY because of the religious significance of the day. They’d be aware that not everyone celebrates this as a religious holiday.

That said, if they were doing it early in the morning or late at night it would be inconsiderate!

I’m Catholic and I wouldn’t care! (PS it’s not mass today)

I'm in the SW - been blowing a gale & peeing down all day. No chance of BBQ, gardening etc. DH & me spent the day doing housework - now that is a real penance for me as hate housework 😫

PassingStranger · 18/04/2025 17:09

Good Friday is not a big day for most now.
Garden Centres etc are very busy.
I don't think it's unreasonable to do work in the daytime especially if your not at work and you've got chance.

Summertimeblahness · 18/04/2025 17:13

If you were religious you would have my sympathy but you are not so the neighbours have as much right as you to do as they wish with the bank holiday.

(I’m not religious btw and I don’t have neighbours so admittedly might feel differently if I was/had either).

Lascivious · 18/04/2025 17:14

Don’t be daft, OP.

Good Friday is meaningless to most, apart from it being a bank holiday. Unless the DIY is really noisy and goes on well into the evening, it’s absolutely fine.

CoastalCalm · 18/04/2025 18:38

Always the time we start getting garden sorted for summer and any DIY things needed
