Noisy DIY on Good Friday

Thehappystitcher69 · 18/04/2025 16:16

I’m not a particularly religious person but I do respect the beliefs and values from all those with a faith. I know from Christian friends that Good Friday is an extremely reflective and somewhat sombre day.
So… do you think it’s reasonable for a neighbour to be carrying out some really noisy DIY today? I’m not talking about the odd tap where some pictures are being hung, but heavy power tools on adjoining walls in a terraced house.
I don’t think it’s fair. AIBU

I'm religious enough to have been to a Good Friday Service, but I am more than happy to do DIY around that, or for other people to do DIY all day.

BHs are times I would expect people to be doing work on their house and garden, as so many wouldn't be at work.

YABU.

mathanxiety · 18/04/2025 22:04

I'm a Catholic and I think YABU. I'll be heading out to veneration of the Cross later, and im doing the fasting and abstinence while at work.

I don't hold back on any activities during the Jewish high holy days or Ramadan, but I tend not to do anything noisy like DIY or throwing BBQs in the back yard anyway.

Points taken - but maybe it isn’t even just to do with religion. More the fact that some of us need a bit of a rest on the days off.
Good luck to those who have got the energy for DIY though. I’m obviously in the wrong job. 🤔

I agree with you it’s a bit selfish, especially if it goes on all day.

I’d mind less if they popped over and asked if it would be ok. It’s less to do with to do with beliefs and more to do with consideration. I’d be highly likely to say no if they had the courtesy to ask.

Doseofreality · 18/04/2025 22:09

Err, doesn’t Good Friday exist because someone did a spot of DIY and knocked up a wooden cross?

ItsCalledAConversation · 18/04/2025 22:11

Our absolute tool bag of a neighbour was grinding and banging away by 9am this morning. He’s rude and mean in many ways (he has windchimes FFS). YANBU

Pickingmyselfup · 18/04/2025 22:13

I was at work today and my husband didn't do any noisy DIY as far as I'm aware but as far as I'm concerned if something needs doing and someone is in during the day to do it it gets done bank holiday or not or it would never get done.

I wouldn't do it too early or too late but the rest of the time is fair game.

Fadesto · 18/04/2025 22:14

Perhaps it’s not that other people don’t need a rest, or have less tiring jobs than you and so have got more energy for diy. But rather this is the only time they have chance to do the diy and they can’t afford to pay someone else to come and do it?

In that case it would be a nice gesture to drop round and explain this - preferably in good time so the neighbour has a chance to organise a day out or similar.

Trumptonagain · 18/04/2025 22:25

I'd imagine had it of been going on all day it is a PITA.

Having said that at least it's noise created by someone doing something creative rather than neighbours banging out music all day....the having to shout over it to have a convention with someone sat 5 foot away.

Had it of been a Sunday, any Sunday and was heavy noise I'd be wholeheartedly agreeing with you.

LillyPJ · 18/04/2025 22:30

For some people who work, this might be the only chance they get for DIY. The majority of people in this country aren't Christian anyway and even for those that are, dates in the religious calendar don't really mean that much. How many people do you know who don't go shopping on a Sunday? Or who actually go to church?

Really? You expect people to tell their neighbours about what they’re doing in their own house and their financial position? I’d only like to be informed if there’s huge building works happening for a long time, like a new extension.
My neighbours kids have been playing (loudly) outside all day, someone down the roads been mowing their garden and jet washing their drive, someone else has been doing diy, I just think it’s normally neighbour noise when it’s not super early or late at night

DIY is just what the irreligious do over Easter. Its not like church services take place in suburban semis.

I bet plenty of religious people do too.

There's a special place in hell for people who have windchimes.

Ilovemyshed · 18/04/2025 22:34

I have cut grass and hedges, plus strimmed. DH has been sanding woodwork 🤷🏽‍♀️. Not sure when else we can do it as there is loads to do and four days off work. I’ll be painting on Sunday.

Always the time we start getting garden sorted for summer and any DIY things needed

Usually this… but it’s raining all weekend here so films, games and soggy dog walks is all we can do… plus chocolate!

Banging and drills is much worse than children playing.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/04/2025 22:39

Using a pneumatic drill outside a church between 3pm and 4pm would be pretty unfortunate. Other than that, can't see the problem.

Userxyd · 18/04/2025 22:46

I think YABU - other people can do what they like, you can observe your religious practices as you like.
just like during Ramadan I will still be eating while others are fasting. The only thing I do disagree with is late night fireworks, whatever the reason, Eid, Christmas, Diwali etc. Except New Years Eve as that’s one night that affects everyone - but even then only a few fireworks bang on midnight - after say 12:20 everyone needs to be quiet again

Tbrh · 18/04/2025 22:48

I hate this every weekend as there is always someone being noisy with DIY, mowing the lawn etc it's so rare for it not to be noisy because I have so many neighbours. I wish it was law that you had to be quiet on a Sunday (not religious but crave some.oeace and quiet!). YABU to expect quiet on Easter though, its probably their only day off to get these jobs done.

This.

Bit weird to expect neighbours to go knocking on the doors of 6 or 7 neighbours to tell them their plans for the day Confused

I would be very Confused if one of my neighbours knocked on my door getting me out of bed to tell me they were going to be cutting the grass / strimming / hedge cutting / sanding that day. What do they expect me to say ?

Why would you knock when they were in bed?

You would just go to your two closest neighbours ( either side) who are the ones directly affected and you’d do it a few days in advance at a decent hour and to give them to make their own plans ( eg day trip out).
I think you’re trying to make it sound ridiculous to make being polite too difficult.
