Sunbed Shock

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 17:09

I’ve been really stupid and gone on the sunbed for twenty minutes and the burns I’ve got - I’ve never seen skin as red. I’ve got like indents to my skin as though I’ve woken to stretch marks on my chest. Will these disappear? I’m in agony. I’ve never burnt and so didn’t know it could cause this kind of pain. I’m shaking shivering. I did this yesterday. Can someone reassure my health anxiety that these indents will all calm down?

Don't let embarrassment stop you from getting medical help tonight! How many bits every summer neglect suncream and end up badly burned? You at least can claim ignorance never having used a sunbed before!

SassyCrab · 16/04/2025 20:37

I’ve just come off sunbed today for 8 minutes and feel like crap where the beds were so hot! Never do more than 10 minutes, just do short and often

I wish you knew what you are doing to yourself. Melanoma is a killer and sunbeds are a factor in their development.

Hi @SansaStark90
Firstly, you made a mistake and you won’t do it again!
I had similar many years ago in my early 20’s. It was like sunburn; it burnt, hot to touch and eventually calmed and the skin peeled.
15 years+ later I’m still here and no long term health effects.
Keep yourself and the skin hydrated x

Skin cancer can develop 30 or 40 years after sunburn.

GrammarTeacher · 16/04/2025 20:45

OP - have you contacted someone for help? 80% surface area burn is serious and needs attention.

dollyblue01 · 16/04/2025 20:45

Oh wow that’s bad , try some sudocrem all over , it’s for burns , please find a good fake tan and never use them again, really not worth it, plenty of water, paracetamol and rest and you should be ok in a few days.

Joystir59 · 16/04/2025 20:45

Good grief. Ring 111 for medical advice asap.

I know what melanoma does to you, I’ve had a family member die from it recently who never went on a sunbed and got burnt in the sun. Sunbed helps build my skin for when I go in the sun to not burn as I’m going on holiday in 2 weeks! If you don’t do nasals and don’t go religiously then there ok

faerietales · 16/04/2025 20:09

Someone who has severe health anxiety wouldn't go and sit on a sunbed for 20 minutes, surely? Confused

It's also not about freaking her out - melanoma in particular is really hard to spot and can be fatal, she needs to know what to look for and what kind of danger she's put herself in.

I mean she’s stated that she knows of nothing about sunbeds…I just spoke with my husband who said 20 mins is nothing. Why is she so red?

it’s just lack of knowledge.

They really aren’t. All UV skin damage is bad. Whether from the sun or a sun bed. If you’re normally pale a tan is not a good thing.

Not sure you should put anything on a burn (unless it's from the hospital) it will feel like it's cooking underneath, I think Sudocrem is fine for a very small area but not the OPs

20 minutes is nothing for someone who has skin like leather and goes 24 7 but for someone’s first time it’s not good at all

This is terrible advice, please don’t do it. Sun beds DON’T ‘pre prepare’ your skin for sun exposure - this is a myth.

It’s inevitable if you’re on holiday, you could wear factor 50 and sit in the shade all day but then what’s the point on going on holiday if your going to be too scared to go in the sun, I’d rather take precautions so I don’t burn when I go away as I don’t usually burn in sunbed as I go gradually

Sorry but you're talking utter rubbish, a tan IS skin damage, just because you don't burn it does not mean you're safe

bigkahunaburger · 16/04/2025 20:52

Im a pale redhead and I lived in Oz for years (where sunbeds are banned for good reason). I use factor 50, wear rash vests, keep in the shade - Ive still got burnt and had sunstroke many many times (im 50). You will be fine. Smother yourself in aftersun/coconut oil (keep it in the fridge), to stop yourself blistering. Take paracetomal. You will feel super weird, hot and like you have a fever. It will go in a few days. If you keep your skin really moisturised you shouldnt blister. A&E only any good if you have severe burns.

Using a sunbed isn’t “taking precautions”! JFC.

Not only should subbed be illegal but spreading dangerous shit like this online should be too.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 16/04/2025 20:53

OP, I am so sorry you're sore!

But fgs, PLEASE never use sunbeds again! They are so, so bad for you! Melanoma is no joke and can VERY easily spread too deep by the time anyone sees it, as it can be pearl coloured or just look like nothing much.

The safest tan is a fake tan. I've found the b.tan range (available from Amazon) to be the best one, and doesn't cost the earth.

You can use gradual tan that builds up, which avoids streaks, and then maintain it every few days. This is the only safe tan.

Please never go near a sunbed again, and limit your sun exposure for the next 3 months or so!

Here's a link to a b.tan. Check out the whole range. I think they're better than more expensive self-tanners that I've bought.

JaxKennedy · 16/04/2025 20:53

The shaking and shivering can happen with intense burns — it’s your body reacting to the trauma and heat exhaustion. If you’re feeling really unwell or if your symptoms are getting worse, see a doctor as soon as possible.
The indents you are seeing could be from swelling, which can make the skin stretch in odd ways. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re permanent — once the inflammation settles down, your skin should gradually return to normal, though it might take a couple of weeks.
It’s completely understandable to feel panicked, especially if this is your first experience with a burn. With some care and time, most burns do settle. Just keep an eye on how you're feeling, and if you notice blisters, signs of infection, or if things get worse, don’t hesitate to get medical advice.
And honestly — you’re not stupid. You’re human. We all learn things the hard way sometimes, but you’ll be okay.

She shouldn't be going at all - and neither should you!

I no longer do. I did in early 20s but haven’t been for years now. Older and wiser I suppose.

WestwardHo1 · 16/04/2025 20:56

Just to reiterate - once the immediate emergency is over, you must take enormous care to NEVER burn again and keep an incredibly careful eye on the areas of burnt skin for the rest of your life.

*OP with Irish skin you should be going for 6-9mins max. * - with pale Irish skin, the OP should never be in a sunbed for any minutes at all.

SheridansPortSalut · 16/04/2025 20:57

You need medical attention.

Doggymummar · 16/04/2025 21:00

I've not used one for 20 years but I used to buy a block of 20 mins but they only ever gave you a two minutes token to use each time, 10 sessions
