Sunbed Shock

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 17:09

I’ve been really stupid and gone on the sunbed for twenty minutes and the burns I’ve got - I’ve never seen skin as red. I’ve got like indents to my skin as though I’ve woken to stretch marks on my chest. Will these disappear? I’m in agony. I’ve never burnt and so didn’t know it could cause this kind of pain. I’m shaking shivering. I did this yesterday. Can someone reassure my health anxiety that these indents will all calm down?

Thinking of you this morning op hope you got some help and are doing ok

AirborneElephant · 17/04/2025 07:20

Please do go and get medical attention OP, especially if you still feel shaky or shivery or nauseous. I know you have health anxiety and I don’t want to make it worse, and I know you feel silly. But full body burns can be dangerous because it impairs the skin’s ability to regulate body temperature and can cause electrolyte imbalances especially if you get blisters today.

Well I hope you don’t come to regret your use in years to come. Melanoma can occur many years after sunburn, be it from the sun or sun bed use. I just hope users take note from the warnings on here but I somehow doubt it.

Edited

After way too much sun when younger (outdoor job for 10 years, plus holidays) I’ve spent the last 10 years with a large Seborrheic keratosis on my temple, a basal cell cancer cut out of my cheek, 2 benign tumors sliced off my nose (currently have another growing), sun spots on my hands. I see the dermatologist every 9 months (£200 a visit). So about 25 years before the lasting sun damage came to fruition.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 17/04/2025 07:37

OP please ignore the people bickering on here. You know you made a mistake and you don’t need to go over that again.

Sunburn is still a burn and covering most of your body is a problem. I hope you are getting medical treatment now.

I hope you start to get some relief from the pain soon.

SALaw · 17/04/2025 07:41

Your mum knows better than 111?! Why take her word over theirs?! I had first degree burns from the sun once (hadn’t reapplied my factor 50 quickly enough) and ended up in hospital. I don’t understand why anyone uses sunbeds at all especially people who (a) have very pale skin and (b) have a health anxiety.

NewAgeNewMe · 17/04/2025 07:47

How are you this morning?

Candleabra · 17/04/2025 07:49

I honestly thought sun beds had been banned after their peak in the 90s/00s and have been surprised to see more tanning salons opening up around us (ones with sun beds not fake tan).
I hope you’re at hospital now and getting the treatment you need.

LittlerCharlotte · 17/04/2025 07:54

Ignore your mum. 111 know far better. Please don't feel ashamed or embarrassed, you deserve and need help.

How are you this morning? You've been in my thoughts x

SALaw · 17/04/2025 08:06

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 17/04/2025 06:02

I honestly didn't think sunbeds were still legal. I thought they'd gone the way of smoking in restaurants.

You’ve never noticed sun bed shops on the high street?!

PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe · 17/04/2025 08:08

I hope you've gone to a&e @SansaStark90 . 111 aren't overreacting - sunburn like you're experiencing can be very serious, you've burns to most of your body and that is a medical emergency.
The shaking and other symptoms you're describing are your body in shock and telling you that it's serious, please listen

maslab · 17/04/2025 08:14

Are you all still giving the OP grief about using a sunbed? Give it a rest. How many of you drink? Smoke? Eat vast amounts of calories? Have tummy fat? Snack on processed food? Use sweeteners?

Give over with the holier than thou faux horror directed at a burnt woman in agony who needs support not a lecture.

I hope you’re ok this morning OP. Shit happens. Don’t let this sanctimonious bunch make you feel any worse. They bloody love a pearl clutching pile on.

SALaw · 17/04/2025 08:06

We don’t have any here - lots of beauty places and places that do fake tans, but I’ve honestly not seen a sun bed in about a decade.

vickylou78 · 17/04/2025 08:17

Go to A&E they can make sure you are treated properly and don't go onto shock or something.

RentalWoesNotFun · 17/04/2025 08:19

I hope youre ok this morning OP.
I think your mums not realised it’s not “just a bit of sunburn”. It’s actually burns. Over most of your body. It will need medical intervention. Please seek help at A&E as soon as possible.

This is why our council stopped their sunbeds in the council gyms. Although they were very popular, raised a lot of revenue and were queued out. But sooo dangerous. Like fags, you don’t see the damage until it’s too late.

I hope you’re ok. Don’t go near the sun again this year without factor 50. Why risk it.

Finallydoingit24 · 17/04/2025 08:33

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 19:19

I am definitely owning that no one forced me and it’s on me for being so stupid. As you can see in the photo. My natural skin tone is very pale so why I thought to go on for so long. I clearly wasn’t thinking. Really paying for not engaging my brain now!

Oh my god, do not ever go on a sunbed when you have pale skin. Just don’t. Do you actively want melanoma or something?
Go to your GP and keep hydrated.

Foreheadthing · 17/04/2025 08:34

It sounds horrendous, you poor thing. Hope you are ok @SansaStark90 and that you went to A+E or at the very least are going this morning.

SALaw · 17/04/2025 08:06

I’ve not seen any for a long time actually. I remember them being popular around the mid 00s but they seem to have gone away where I live at least. I knew they weren’t illegal though as we’d have heard about it.

mjf981 · 17/04/2025 08:35

People still use sunbeds?! I don't live in the UK anymore, but I haven't seen one in many years.

sonoonetoldyoulifewasgonnabethisway · 17/04/2025 08:39

I have the same skin as yourself, I can get burnt if I am out in it for 20 mins. It was overcast on last day of our holiday one year and stupidly, stupidly, I did not put cream. I woke following morning swollen, red raw and in agony, anything that touched it the pain was intense. Had to put loose clothing on for plane ride and hold seat belts away from my body.

I went back to work the following day and the nurse I work with sent me straight to A&E, second degree burns on my stomach and my legs. They gave me Aveeno moisturizing cream. It took the swelling down, stopped the itch and relieved some of the pain (also was told paracetamol and ibrufen). It took a few weeks to go down and it did blister.

Hope you got sorted at A&E, if you didn't go get some Aveeno and I promise it will really hep.

SALaw · 17/04/2025 08:44

@faerietales @Finallydoingit24unless you live very remotely I find that hard to believe. My very local area has at least 2. The Tanning Shop and Indigo Sun alone each have around 100 branches literally all over the U.K. so unless you mean literally within the very immediate area you live on a very small radius, you are bound to have these near you.

I think everyone who has posted on here deeply cares about the OP. I know it was the first thing I thought of when I woke up.
However, some of us are trying to make people realise, for the future, just how dangerous sunbeds are. It’s not that we are being sanctimonious at all, just trying to make people aware of what they are doing to themselves.
Hopefully the OP has been to A and E and received the treatment she so desperately needs.

EstherGreenwood63 · 17/04/2025 08:47

Oh you poor thing OP. I hope you've got some medical help by now. Please stop berating yourself. You deserve sympathy and concern. Your mum sounds a bit shit tbh. You'll get over this. Then think about taking action against the dangerous outfit that allowed this to happen. Feel better. 💐

Livpool · 17/04/2025 08:47

I can’t believe people still use these! They should be illegal

I will look out for them from now on. OP I hope you are okay. I had bad burn from the actual sun once (had forgotten to apply cream to my back) and it was so so painful. I couldn’t sleep. However the cream the doctor prescribed was really effective and worked straight away so hopefully you will have a similar outcome. Never go on sunbeds again though.

Why would anyone lie about seeing a sunbed shop?

I know they still exist as I’ve seen them multiple times in the past but not recently and certainly not in our local area. I’m sure they exist in larger towns or cities but they’re not something I look out for or pay any attention to, really.
