Sunbed Shock

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 17:09

I’ve been really stupid and gone on the sunbed for twenty minutes and the burns I’ve got - I’ve never seen skin as red. I’ve got like indents to my skin as though I’ve woken to stretch marks on my chest. Will these disappear? I’m in agony. I’ve never burnt and so didn’t know it could cause this kind of pain. I’m shaking shivering. I did this yesterday. Can someone reassure my health anxiety that these indents will all calm down?

If you haven’t done so already go and stand under a lukewarm shower for at least 20 minutes to stop the burn penetrating any deeper.

Do you scar from blistering? I am a worrier and I’ve never even had a little sunburn. I thought I would have blistered by now if I was going to? Clearly, I don’t know what I’m on about re tanning and burning 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes… you absolutely can scar, and I’m speaking from experience. Seek treatment and good luck x

NewAgeNewMe · 16/04/2025 22:08

Op hasn’t posted for a while so hopefully getting seen.

Whynotletsgo · 16/04/2025 22:14

Mediterranean here with olive skin and lots of experience to extreme sun exposure.
Showers as suggested are not going to do anything as the heat from the skin would be too much. You can wet two big towels, put one down, lie on it and put the other one on top of you. It will feel like heaven and cool you down considerably. As other posters said, keep skin hydrated but please no oil on it as it clogs the pores and makes things even worse. Aloe Vera or bepanthen is your best friend here. Keep reapplying continuously until skin is not absorbing that quickly. If persists please seek medical assistance and avoid sun beds in the future xx

FairGreyBird · 16/04/2025 22:20

I would warn the sunbed shop as they should be trained correctly and make sure this doesn’t happen to anybody else.

I have dark skin tan easily and usually go on for 9 minutes, recently went in and asked for 9 the girl told me I couldn’t and could do 6 as I haven’t been in for a while.

also a few weeks later I was told I couldn’t do 9 as the beds had been retubed.

Splat92 · 16/04/2025 22:20

Aussie with pale skin here. Agree with Whynotletsgo. Showers won't do much. Get some aloe vera gel and apply liberally.

I mean she’s stated that she knows of nothing about sunbeds…I just spoke with my husband who said 20 mins is nothing. Why is she so red?

it’s just lack of knowledge.

No, it’s stupidity.

BunnyLake · 16/04/2025 22:23

I honestly didn’t know sunbeds were still a thing.

Scorchio84 · 16/04/2025 22:25

Blackdow · 16/04/2025 17:19

You’re only meant to be in there for a few minutes. Who allowed you to do 20 minutes?
You’ve spent the equivalent of 4 or 5 hours in direct, strong sunlight without any skin protection. You will be burnt.

Do you feel unwell? Any sickness?

Drinks plenty of water or isotonic drinks, and I’d suggest actually just getting into a tepid/cool shower and staying in there. Take paracetamol.

All of this... fucking hell, please tell me your eyes were covered

whynotwhatknot · 16/04/2025 22:25

no its not your fault the sunbed place should be advising how long you should go on as a new user not let you decide

theyre negligent

Sportacus17 · 16/04/2025 22:26

I can’t believe sunbeds are still legal. Absolutely no need for them and just dangerous!

I know they're banned over here for under 16s.. imagine even having to have a law for that, for communions & confirmations etc

WhereIsMyJumper · 16/04/2025 22:29

Christ OP - your last update was hours ago. I really hope you’re ok and have sought medical attention

In the UK and Ireland they are banned for under 18s.

Isittimeformynapyet · 16/04/2025 22:36

I keep rereading the OP to see where she says it's the first time she's ever used a sunbed as so many posters have stated. Can someone point it out to me please.

AlwaysTheRenegade · 16/04/2025 22:37

Did they offer you twenty mins without checking if you've had one before? I think you have to build up with sunbeds but I've never had one myself. Was tempted when I was younger though! I have similar skin and I've had dodgy moles removed from being sunburnt as a kid. You must be in agony Sad
Were the beds crazily hot/ broken?
The only person I know that did rubbers had a course before her wedding and the ends of her nipples fell off 😂 Really hope you feel better soon or get to emergency care ❤

I don't think she said "first ever", but it was implied that it was possibly the first session?

I think they’re assuming it from this ‘I used to tan very easily in the sun, I thought 20 minutes was standard’

Scorchio84 · 16/04/2025 22:42

JessyCarr · 16/04/2025 22:31

Oh? Sorry my mistake, even better

A pp has said water could cause cellulitis? I’ve not gone to a&e and going to wait until morning and phone my gp. I lived in Thailand and saw people burn badly and they never sought treatment. I think I’m just in agony as I’ve done most of my body.

Have you at least rang 111?

Oneday24 · 16/04/2025 22:45

OP I’ve suffered severe sunburn before a long with heat stroke, it was awful the first few days but does get better and I had no lasting damage! I too had the swelling which subsided after a few days then the white blisters came before the peeling. Take ibruprofen (if you can have it) drink plenty of fluids. Have cold showers and use plenty of after sun! The shivering will be from the shock. I’d also speak to the salon when you feel better, they really should be paying more attention to safety!

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 22:47

faerietales · 16/04/2025 22:20

No, it’s stupidity.

Why are you so nasty? I have admitted I’ve been stupid. But do you drink alcohol, eat junk food. I’m a human who has made a mistake. Suffering!!

@SansaStark90 reading the NHS guidance if you are feeling shivery you need medical attention so please at least call 111

The 20 minutes under coolish running water advice is the standard first aid treatment for all burns. You should also get some proper medical advice and drink plenty of water
