Put up wind chimes to annoy noisy neighbours

I have recently put up 2 large wind chimes to annoy my neighbours. I’ve had enough work long night shifts & the neighbours who’s house mine is attached too make constant noise have a loud dog that barks throughout the day & every morning at 7 30 am I’ve tried being nice explained I work nights and although they apologised nothings changed it’s horrible I go to work exhausted then can’t sleep when I come home what sealed the decision to buy them & put them up was when my daughter was singing in her room the other day at 6pm then they had a had the audacity to shout shut up & bang on the walls.. Still I am not a bad person so keep umming & awing about taking them down but I don’t think I will I want to bring them some of the stress they have bought me.

Well it seems to have brought you some satisfaction but I doubt if it's going to alleviate the situation much.

CaptainCavey · 16/04/2025 00:08

It sounds awful, nothing worse than shit neighbours. What will you do if they ask you to take the chimes down?

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 16/04/2025 00:11

I once had this with a neighbour, I worked shifts and they were noisy fuckers during the day. I left my music on blaring and went and slept and my parents house that day. Didn’t hear a peep out of them after that.

This was way back as I had a CD player that could hold and play 3 CDs. It was a kenwood stereo that would also shake the house 😂

No idea probably just say something like it’s not nice being woken up & feeling tired is it? Honestly don’t know just depends how I feel on the day

Is there any legitimate reason for wind chimes? There's a house a few doors away with them and I assumed it was to keep rats or cats away or something, hadn't considered it was just to be a dick to neighbours 😂

homemadebasilpesto · 16/04/2025 00:31

I'd say put them up if you enjoy them, not just to annoy them. I'd love some by my bedroom but don't want to annoy the neighbours who have a bedroom in that area, so haven't. If they put one up there, it would make my day.

I liked the sound of my wooden ones (before they got mangled in my hedge) They were quite large so it wasn't high pitched tinkly.
I don't think I'd want metal ones.

They were at the bottom of the garden which backs on to another garden so not near anyone's windows or house. Anyway, it's all irrelevant now. I make a xylophone 🤣

Call the RSPCA re the barking dog because it’s being neglected

Fraaances · 16/04/2025 03:11

I'd be tempted to become and opera "fan" and blast them with everything you can find.

merrymelodies · 16/04/2025 03:20

I love wind chimes so they would be welcome. Maybe record their dog barking and play it back at them? A cacophony of barking dogs!

PinataHeeHaw · 16/04/2025 05:25

Write down every time the dog barks including date and time and send to your local councils noise abatement team. I had to do this after four years of dogs barking and howling next door to me and speaking to the neighbours didn't work long term. They just didn't give a shit. It took a few letters and phone calls from the council to the neighbour (it quietened for a few weeks but always started up again), but now she keeps the dogs quiet mostly. If she goes upstairs or out, one dog will bark and howl and if I know she's upstairs, I bang on the wall hard. It works.

HelenWheels · 16/04/2025 05:51

i would like to know whoever thought wind chimes were a good idea!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 16/04/2025 06:02

I worked night shift for years, I understand that it is frustrating trying to sleep during the day. If it isn't your neighbour, children will pass, playing ball, traffic, the whistle of the postman, birds singing. The world won't change because you work night shift.
Can you look for another job.

DDivaStar · 16/04/2025 06:13

Dogs barking is so annoying, but your sleeping pattern isn't their problem. If you work nights you need to get used to sleeping with the world and its noise carrying on around you.

GingerPaste · 16/04/2025 06:16

I have a set of metal wind chimes I call the ‘Cathedral bells’ (they didn’t look too big in the shop. When I got them home, it was a different matter…)

I’ll send them over to you… 😂

But, yeah, noisy neighbours. A lot of people just don’t give a fuck about the noise they, their dogs, children or music make!

Unless your wind chimes are outside, I doubt your neighbours will hear them.
I have several, but they only chime if the patio door is open and it's windy.

Who puts wind chimes inside the house?

The rspca don't do anything about barking dogs unless there's clear abuse. There's a big dog that's left outdoors howling most of the day near a friend, and her and neighbours have reported it and the rspca wasn't interested.
Its not illegal to leave a dog alone so unless there's physical abuse or food neglect they won't do anything.

Vettrianofan · 16/04/2025 07:50

You need some heavy bass music like Metallica or Five Finger Death Punch.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 16/04/2025 08:58

Do you expect everybody around you to be quiet when you're working a night shift then? I'm not saying it's not annoying to have dogs barking - I'd hate that, but, surely, you're not unreasonable enough to think that your neighbours should be tiptoeing around so that you can sleep?!
I hate other people's noise, which isn't ideal as I live in a middle floor flat, but, even I have had to accept that it happens and I can't tell the neighbours what to do in the daytime.
I'd be really cross if my neighbour put up metal windchimes, they're the invention of the Devil, I think, but if they were wooden ones, I'd actually quite like that!

JohnofWessex · 16/04/2025 09:30

You need the Dog Warden and or the Councils Noise team to deal with the dog

Words · 16/04/2025 10:37

Opera. Max volume.

Mh67 · 16/04/2025 16:37

Unfortunately you choose to work nights and neighbours can live their lives they don't need to be quiet. You need white noise machine eye mask and earplugs

YourIcyGoldOrca · 16/04/2025 17:17

Unfortunately it's not unreasonable to make sound during the day although i understand your situation and its not easy. I would be getting some really good ear plugs. I like wind chimes although it would annoy me if making sound during the night as I'm a very light sleeper.

ShakeUpYourTiredEyes · 16/04/2025 17:27

After an altercation with my disrespectful neighbours last night I've been seething and this morning went and bought windchimes for my garden, big and small. I love them and have kids with a sensory garden except sound but even just the kids talking out there or literally the creak of the swing when my ds is laid in silence on his swing they shout out the window before slamming it shut and tell their dog to get in now so they don't have to hear my kids and slam the French doors aggressively I mean I'm not bothered I hope they break their doors and windows but we barely use the garden, we'll barely.... we will be now so this post made me laugh. Good for you
