To think £10 isn't enough?

Emoleno · 15/04/2025 17:47

DS is going to be given a lift, which will be a 30-mile round trip.

Does £10 cover the fuel cost AND the goodwill of the driver, who is doing him a big favour?

Thanks

Is the driver going there anyway? I think £10 is enough

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 15/04/2025 17:49

Depends on DS age and relationship to the driver. A 18 year old (who won’t have a lot of money) being driven by an aunt or a friend…£10 is fine. For a 35 year old who has asked a mate I don’t see often to help me, I’d offer at least £20.

Zippidydoodah · 15/04/2025 17:50

My work expenses amount to 45p a mile, which makes 30 miles £13.50.

Re: good will, it depends who they are in relation to you/your son, and if they were going there anyway?

IdLikeThingToSpiralIntoControl · 15/04/2025 17:51

Blimey, even the maximum HRMC fuel rate per mile is only 25p? £30 is too much.
£10 for fuel and bottle of wine?

Pungifries · 15/04/2025 17:51

Yes, £10 will likely cover the fuel (unless driving a very uneconomical car) , but depending on the relationship with the driver, might be appropriate to offer a bit more

Who said £30?

arcticpandas · 15/04/2025 17:53

Depends. Is the person going there anyway or is he/she just helping out?

Perimama · 15/04/2025 17:54

If the person is going there anyway £10 is enough. If they are going there just for him, I would offer £20

alcoholnightmare · 15/04/2025 17:54

I think £10 is fine FGS

I don't think driving 30 miles is such a big favour - it's what an hour max? Need more context.

Emoleno · 15/04/2025 18:04

Ok, thanks. £10 it is

I think it will cover fuel so sounds fine to me. I wouldn't expect to be paid for time/goodwill if doing a favour (unless they always get favours without reciprocating in some way)

More context would be helpful but if it’s a round trip then that implies the driver will potentially be hanging around for a while before bringing your son back, in which case a tenner for the cost of fuel and a bottle of wine/chocs for their goodwill/time would be adequate I’m sure 🙂

pearbottomjeans · 15/04/2025 18:07

It's not a favour if you have to pay for it really is it. My friends nor I have never given each other money for a lift

That’s not correct it’s £0.45

GabbySolisX · 15/04/2025 18:23

Depends if they are going there anyway. If they are £10 is fine, if they’re going out their way I’d prob just give £20 for the fuel and tell them to grab themself a costa on the way home with the rest.

Love51 · 15/04/2025 18:29

I'd go £20 if they are doing it specifically for a favour, as in they wouldn't be going anyway. Also cover any car parking costs.
Most works offer 45p a mile but they also pay you for your time. £13.50 is a strange amount of money to give, so I'd go up to the next £10.
Not that I've ever had a lift from someone who isn't going anyway. My Mum always gives me petrol money even though I tell her not to, it's nice to see cash occasionally!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 15/04/2025 18:40

I think £10 is fine. I regularly give fuel money to friends and my DSs for lifts etc

PassingStranger · 15/04/2025 18:46

A return journey in a taxi that distance would cost me 126 in a taxi, so not it's not enough.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 16/04/2025 12:56

You can’t charge a relative private hire prices!!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 16/04/2025 12:58

I regularly get a taxi to hospital appointments 11miles away and I pay £35

Lovelysummerdays · 16/04/2025 13:02

My work pays £0.45 so I’d probably say £10 for petrol and a coffee somewhere if there is a convenient stop off / drive thru on the way.
