Slimming World banner in front of school is inappropriate

Parox · 15/04/2025 11:35

A large slimming world banner as recently been installed by the school entrance (juniors Y3 to Y6).
Should this be allowed so close to the school? I have nothing against slimming world, it's a good program for adults, but I don't think slimming diet culture is good for younger people. I read recently on bbc news that eating disorders are on the rise so the topic is sensitive and imo should be part of risk assessment/safeguarding to not promote a slimming diet culture near a school.

What do you think?

I agree but I suppose they pay money to the school to use the binding and therefore need to advertise.

H0LLOW · 15/04/2025 12:00

Absolutely agree OP. There was one outside our school too.

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 15/04/2025 12:03

What does it actually say? If it basically just says that there is a slimming world held there then I can't see the problem. If it has a slogan about how much better being slim is etc. then I agree that it isn't a message I'd want children seeing as they go into school each day.

The mere fact that its advertising weight loss classes is implication that it’s better to be slim.
It’s interesting that the weight loss groups don't advertise themselves as ‘stop being so fat’ groups.

Well it is better for your health to not carry extra weight? Although Slimming World isn't the healthiest way about it

Hoppinggreen · 15/04/2025 12:12

Whatever they are advertising it should not be allowed at a school.
Commercial banners have no place there

LovingGoldFinch · 15/04/2025 12:14

Is it actually on the school property? I would make a complaint. They can put the banner up at the times they use it and advertise elsewhere. You just know there will be shitty kids pointing to it and harassing their classmates that they "need" it. it's also a terrible program and not appropriate to be aimed literally at children when eating disorders are a risk.

It might be there’s a group that uses the school building though.

QuickLilacPoster · 15/04/2025 12:16

Absolutely should not be anywhere on school property.

Nothing you can do though if it isn’t on schools property

Arlanymor · 15/04/2025 12:18

I would imagine it isn't advertising Slimming World per se but is signposting people to where/when classes are held (assuming they use the building after school hours?) So it's a conversation to be had with the school, who would have given permission for the banner to go up. Arguably it would be better located outside of the school gates and that is the point that I would make to the school.

Yes I would be worried about the bullying from other kids though to be honest even seeing an advert on TV about slimming could trigger this kind of bullying (I had this from a bully at school. They had seen a slim fast advert on tv and used it to taunt me. Some kids act.like arseholes.

Do they use the school? And pay the school money to do so? Are parents incapable of explaining to a child what Slimming World is? There’s a Slimming World poster on the fence of a church just down the road. We’ve passed it many, many times. It’s been there for about 15 years. Dc, aged 17 and 14 have never asked what it is. Ever.

LizzieBananas · 15/04/2025 12:23

If this was my area, the layout goes infants, church hall, juniors and Slimming World do have a banner up outside the church hall.

If it’s outside a building they rent, that’s normal and fine.

I do believe that the local Alcoholics Anonymous group meet in our church hall! Good for them I say!
SW often meet in school halls.
If my kids asked what it was I would tell them. I have never been overweight myself but really admire people who take responsibility for their health and choose to go to SW. It's a real community for many.
Some people would complain about anything

It may be, which is why I said they can put it up when it's in use as that won't be when children are also using the school (it will be an event or weekend) But advertise elsewhere iyswim. IME though they usually leave the large banner permanently in front of the village hall or wherever. They really shouldn't do that with a school though.

It also makes me wonder if it's there to target the mostly female demographic doing the school run/recently had a baby which is gross too.

I really don’t think this is why Slimming World has a poster up. I’ve only ever seen SW advertised where the session takes place.

So what if it does? That is what marketing is all about - connecting with the target audience! The 'you're fine as you are' mantra is not healthy. If a woman who is struggling with her weight after having children sees that banner, she might be interested in signing up. And if the meetings are held in a place she knows - all the better. If she then ends up healthier and feels supported on her weight loss journey, that is not 'gross' at all. There is so much stigma about being overweight - surely offering solutions is a good answer.

comeandhaveteawithme · 15/04/2025 12:44

Slimming world is actually terrible for adults and is slowly being exposed as such.

But I imagine the local slimming world group use the school as their venue and pay the school to do so. The school will probably benefit from what they pay.

So there's not a lot you can do, unfortunately.

Yes, which is also why have regulators for marketing. Because people like you exist.

sHREDDIES19 · 15/04/2025 12:47

I am astounded this has caused concern and the thought that someone might complain to a school about a poster/banner advertising a local SW group, it beggars belief! I imagine for most kids it wouldn't even register but as a pp has said, this is where a conversation is had with the child to explain it's a group for overweight people to help them lose excess weight.

LovingGoldFinch · 15/04/2025 12:47

Oh woe is me, who out there will be brave enough to tell the fatties, how fat they really are? There is no other way for them to ever know that diets exist or that they're too fat.

No3392 · 15/04/2025 12:51

Slimming world is trash. For that reason YANBU.

But just as a banner outside a school, I don't think I can get het up about it.

Exactly . Are the banners necessary even? Those who want to lose weight can search online or ask their doctor?

How?
I attend SW and am advised to make healthy swaps. Eat fruit and vegetables etc. Use syns- can eat chocolate or crisps etc but limit the amount. What is actually unhealthy about that? Nothing.
