Slimming World banner in front of school is inappropriate

Parox · 15/04/2025 11:35

A large slimming world banner as recently been installed by the school entrance (juniors Y3 to Y6).
Should this be allowed so close to the school? I have nothing against slimming world, it's a good program for adults, but I don't think slimming diet culture is good for younger people. I read recently on bbc news that eating disorders are on the rise so the topic is sensitive and imo should be part of risk assessment/safeguarding to not promote a slimming diet culture near a school.

What do you think?

Well slimming world has scientifically been proven not to work ..
Professionals call it a cult.. especially the late Michael Mosley.
I'd been annoyed.

TheMeasure · 15/04/2025 13:15

You are being utterly ridiculous. It’s a banner. I don’t suppose most of the kids have even noticed it’s there, let alone made the connection between it and people being overweight.

brunettemic · 15/04/2025 13:16

You lost any semblance of a good argument when you said a system that teaches bad relationships with food and is specifically designed to fail is good.

I think the rise in ed's can mainly be blamed on teens watching inappropriate, damaging content on the Internet, not a 6 year old passing a SW poster on their way into school. It's not a poster promoting anorexia fgs.

Anonym00se · 15/04/2025 13:19

The banner goes up outside our youth centre on the days that there are SW classes there all day, then gets taken down. It’s to show attendees that they’ve come to the right place.

BigFatLiar · 15/04/2025 13:28

Its basically a poster for a diet group that pays to use the facilities so that members know where they are. Many don't like SW or WW as they know diets don't work. At least SW pushes a 'maintenance plan' for members that have reached their goal and stops charging. I'd rather people took positive steps to control their weight through their diet rather than rely on jabs from the pharmacist.

Assuming they hold meetings in the school, then reasonable.

I hope the school if it is the case is not accepting anything from McDonalds as it would be inconsistent to do so.

Totally consistent if MacD was paying for use of facilities.

Allowing a group to pay for use of facilities does not necessarily mean an endorsement of the groups goals, merely an endorsement of the acceptability of their money.

FGS it’s like Trumpian bollock has taken over the world.. say something often enough (even when it’s NOT true) and it becomes reality .. !!
So just to be very clear . Being a healthy weight IS better for you than being overweight or obese . I’m sorry but thems the facts . ‘ Embrace the you, you are’ even if that’s morbid obesity, is a nonsense. It doesn’t mean castigate or blame people for being in this position. Kindness , help and education to help them make better choices should be the way forward.. and if that means an overweight mum on the way to the school pickup sees a poster nudging her into thinking about making good choices and motivated to get in the healthy zone then what on earth is wrong with that ? It’s EXACTLY what I saw and did. At 17stone.. admittedly I only stayed with slimming world for a month because then I was motivated to investigate weight loss injections.. and now at 9st exactly I am so thankful for that nudge. Because without that I would be unhealthy with high BP, pre diabetic and on a collision course with heart disease.. and now I’m not .

Oh I don't know - there's a hell of a lot of seriously fat kids about. The sign might shame their parents into looking at what they have done to their dc.

Many cases of obesity in kids is the kids secretly binge eating so not always the parents fault though.

How?
I attend SW and am advised to make healthy swaps. Eat fruit and vegetables etc. Use syns- can eat chocolate or crisps etc but limit the amount. What is actually unhealthy about that? Nothing.

Were both your questions rhetorical, since you answered one of them yourself? Or would you like an answer?

A 6 year old doesn't attend junior school though

I think the idea of hiding all diets from children is stupid, slimming world is for people who are overweight and want help and a support group to lose weight. It will be held at the school or aimed at parents trying to shift baby weight / dad bods. Most children will have little to no interest in it and know it isn't aimed at them.

Nobody ever developed an eating disorder from seeing a slimming world poster. Anorexia it is so much more deep rooted illness, it is so complex and more of OCD / control thing than just wanting to be thin.

You might as well decide to ban thin people from going out in public.

Okay, 7-10 year olds then if you want to split hairs.

steff13 · 15/04/2025 17:50

Is the banner there all the time? Weight Watchers uses churches and schools here for meetings, but they only put the signs up on meeting days, to alert people to where the meeting is.

5128gap · 15/04/2025 17:59

I think you're overreacting. The chances are DC are going to barely notice an advert that isn't targeted at their demographic. Why do you think pictures of 'mum age' women talking about 'slimming' are going to resonate with and influence them? And if they do question it, surely its no different to how you'd navigate adverts for McDonalds or some other thing thats not for them? "Some people want to lose weight (eat burgers) the advert is to tell them where they can go for that. It's not something you need to be concerned with as we are not interested in losing weight (eating burgers today)"

ilovepixie · 15/04/2025 18:06

If the classes are in the school then they need to advertise.

The average age of my Fat Club (as I call it) is about 60! I don’t think there’s any risk of them warping young minds. 🤣

Yes, I did try it for a bit a few years ago, before I was alerted to how bad it actually is for you, and found I didn't fit in at all as a 30 year old mum with a new-born.
Mostly older women constantly talking about how they could save points for their wine. Wine this, wine that.
As a breastfeeding young mum who hates wine, it wasn't for me.
Plus, the consultant kept suggesting sausages and ham to a very obviously Muslim woman and I had a sneaky suspicion she was doing it on purpose while trying to appear innocent.
Neither me nor her went back after a couple of weeks.

Shubbypubby · 16/04/2025 18:12

@comeandhaveteawithme I actually calorie count, I don’t follow the SW plan but I do really like my consultant and have made friends there. I go for the moral support and accountability of the weigh in.
