What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

The North

You don't like Wick?

ilovesushi · 14/04/2025 14:02

I've remembered another one. When I was in my twenties, I lived in Norwich for a while in an old part of town. Nearly every time I turned the corner at the bottom of my road/ lane, I saw out of the corner of my eye a shadowy figure standing against the wall. When I looked again, there was nothing there. Always had a slightly ominous feeling on that corner. I used to cross the road to avoid that patch.

Caldey Island, with the monastery. Creepy vibes. And this was YEARS before the abuse allegations came to light.

Abuse allegations?! I remember going there with my parents and sister when I was about 14, all hormonal and thinking that the top of the cliff overlooking the sea would be a romantic place to shag a Poldark type of character. 😂

I love Thurso! xx

It was 20 years ago and I am sure there could have been more to experience tbh.

I love remote places generally. This experience was however very depressing, claustrophobic, grim. The town was awful. Back then anyway.

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/04/2025 14:03

really didn't like Blackley in Manchester or Plumstead when I went years ago

Bogginsthe3rd · 14/04/2025 14:03

Liverpool for me. Strange city with weird vibes.

Ecocool · 14/04/2025 14:04

Wisbech. It was like going back to the 70s in the town. At first I thought it was quaint...then I realised it was real life there.

Canterbury and Gloucester, not the cathedrals but the cities in general. Especially Asda in Gloucester, which seemed full of huge scary people.
Northampton bus station seemed sad, as mentioned earlier.

I used to work in the bakery section of that ASDA when I was a student. It was scary!

Oh crap, should have researched before I posted. Just read a news article. Horrific. 😢

Spidey66 · 14/04/2025 14:05

Westbury. Just a totally nothing place. The High Street is some council flats with some charity shops underneath. It's goy a nice White Horse carved into the hillside near it though. Plus it's close to Frome which is where i live and is much better!

Camborne in Cornwall. Just grim!

Portmerion. Appeared deserted but felt like we were being watched. I haven't seen The Prisoner so that didn't account for it.

Agree! Such an odd place. Not very attractive close up, like a wobbly old film set. The surrounding area and sea nearby is lovely, but Portmeirion was a juxtaposition of leftover bits and pieces

Walsingham. Felt like we were being watched.
Fully agree on Camden too.

I've been scrolling to see if someone mentioned Walsingham because it was the first place that sprang to mind when I saw the thread title! Yes, absolutely felt like I was being watched and a general weird sensation. It was worst in the shrine, really intense, but the whole town had the same feel. I was about 12 when I went there with my family, my mother loved old cathedrals and chapels etc and mostly I found them very interesting but that one I found sinister.

As a child I often used to get an uneasy feeling about places, thankfully not so much now. I know what the OP means about Berwick though

I was there some time ago for a conference. Some of us were in the pub when a group of students walked in, in blackface. It felt like something out of pre-civil-rights era America. But also like it was a completely normal occurence for this particular pub and town.

Jesus fucking christ!!

ThatGumYouLike · 14/04/2025 14:07

Prudhoe, near to Newcastle. I found it to have a very unnerving feel to it.

RobertaFirmino · 14/04/2025 14:09

I'm sure it's been demolished now but Robin Hood Gardens in Poplar. I didn't feel unsafe or anything, it was just incredibly dystopian. I had a freaky recurring dream about the place for years afterwards.

strawlight · 14/04/2025 14:09

The M62 over Saddleworth. It’s bleak and horrible things happened there, I can’t wait to get over the tops.

CaliforniaPoppies · 14/04/2025 14:10

Oh yes, Walsingham gave me the creeps too, as did Whitby Abbey - like I could feel the spirits from a long time ago.

The place in Dorset with the massive brick wall all the way round it and the entrance gates with the 5 legged animals. Creepy.

That's the Drax estate

Hastings.

Yes!! We went on Saturday. What a strange town

PinkPonyClubber · 14/04/2025 14:11

Derby, can’t even tell you why. Went there for a few days with work and the whole place just gave me the creeps.
Also Camden, went in the 90s and was fine. Been twice with teenager in the last few years and it’s so awful. Know loads of people who go drinking there for the day, it’s like hell.

LetMeGoogleThat · 14/04/2025 14:11

Trawsfynydd, the decommissioned nuclear power station freaks me out.

Sands End, nr Whitby.
Seven Sisters, London

Chatham, Medway. Makes me itch

Camden. I love London, but not Camden.

Oh my! I completely agree.
