What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

The Solway Firth

Blackpool. Absolute dump and full of druggies, alcoholics and inbreds.

WestwardEast · 14/04/2025 13:41

Areas of Wiltshire near Stonehenge, but not Stonehenge itself! My daughter also gets a feeling there, but feels it as a nice, comfortable feeling!
Also a local house.

I once had to cycle through Delamere forest on a 100 mile sportive and it felt very sinister. I'm not keen on forests at the best of times, and much prefer moors and the top of hills, but this gave me the creeps.

Funnily enough, I like Todmorden, which another poster put. It does feel a bit weird as it's in a valley and gets very little sunlight.

Todmorden is a bit of a hot-spot for paranormal and ufo sightings so there may well be something strange about it.

East Ham.
Shoreham- didn't feel safe.

Tophelleborine · 14/04/2025 13:43

Hebden Bridge. Norfolk.

My mother in law's house.

Canterbury and Gloucester, not the cathedrals but the cities in general. Especially Asda in Gloucester, which seemed full of huge scary people.
Northampton bus station seemed sad, as mentioned earlier.

Mikart · 14/04/2025 13:43

York and the surrounding area.
Masham

arcticpandas · 14/04/2025 13:44

Buckingham Palace. Just feels weird that you can live in a palace while on benefits.

London. Too many people.
Liverpool. Too many weird people.

MakeMeJuno · 14/04/2025 13:44

Surprised not to have seen Margate mentioned... like an abandoned haunted fairground vibe

The centre of Bolton when all the spiced-up zombies are out can be grim. I took some foreign students there once and they couldn't believe the place.

The centre of Bury isn't much better - it appears to be comprised entirely of vape shops and the people just look defeated, even the ones not on spice.

All of Rochdale.

All of Wigan.

Bolton is my hometown and although it used to be a prominent and wealthy industrial town, like many other northern towns it has been hit badly by the economy and lack of regeneration. It can be "gritty" but it has some beautiful architecture and I don't think you'll find friendlier people anywhere else.
I live in London now but I regularly go home for a good old northern recheck.

MyKingdomForACat · 14/04/2025 13:45

Couldn’t bear to go back onto HMS Belfast which is (was?) moored on the Thames near London Bridge. Horrible creepy place

SmallSoupcon · 14/04/2025 13:45

Chesil Beach.

Is it because of the sea mist that muffled any sound? Is it because we were the only people within sight? Is it because of Ian McEwan? Dunno, but I won't be going there again in a hurry.

A bit further inland and there's no problem at all.

Where does it come up regularly? I have never seen the Savernake Forest mentioned. I'm genuinely interested. What context does it come up in?
Edited to say I've just now seen it mentioned in the post above mine (which I obviously hadn't read when I posted), but I think, even that is with reference to yours.

Edited

Romney Marsh. My daughter (adult) feels the same. I can't put my finger on what it is, but I really hate it if we have to go somewhere via Romney Marsh. That's the only place I can think of in the UK (apart from Bath which was mentioned in the OP).

The North

All of it ?

InterIgnis · 14/04/2025 13:47

Lincolnshire, particularly the Fenland area. For a fertile area, it ironically feels very barren to me. I always felt strange driving through, just this endless flatness and emptiness as far as the eye could see.

Wafflesandcrepes · 14/04/2025 13:47

Henley on Thames. Too perfect. Always think people might be daleks in disguise.

Boscastle, Cornwall. People were lovely, but really felt I shouldn’t be there. Weird

Yes! especially the old museum of Witchcraft, went years before it was modernised and it was the creepiest place ever

Agreed. All four are the absolute pits.

dungeness. It’s like a nuclear holocaust has happened and there’s nothing left but a few people living in sheds.

so accurate @londongirl12.

to compound the horror of my trip there a rusty nail just lying around went through my flip flop and necessitated a tetanus shot….

A village called Slapton in South Devon, felt like a weird vibe, unwelcoming.

Liverpool, had to go regularly for a year for a work course I was doing. Really don't want to offend any Liverpudlians - it was just very outside my comfort zone.

Slapton used to be a very welcoming village, we used to camp and then walk up to the village at night. The Tower used to be such a lovely pub with a wonderful atmosphere but then new owners took it over and ripped it apart - it's changed hands a few times. The Queens head was always very welcoming - even cooked us chips out of eating hours.

I haven't been for some years but it became obvious the last time that most of the village is now holiday cottages - such a shame the locals were wonderful
