What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Wroxham in Norfolk is the weirdest place. All the shops are Roy’s of Wroxham, Roy even owns the car park.

Minions on Bodmin Moor. Horrible atmosphere - just felt creepy. Was speaking to someone we know from wadebridge about 3 years later and he said he and his friends had been totally weirded out one evening in the pub there.

There are some brilliant names on Bodmin Moor. Minions, Blunts, Quethiock, Bethany, Polyphant....

Crazybaby123 · 14/04/2025 19:29

Ive never been, and now I never will😂

You don’t want too, certainly not missing much. 🤣

Lonelycrab · 14/04/2025 19:32

They have actual Minions on the road signs going into Minions, pretty cool.

But Bodmin moor is a bit strange as a place I agree.

Xcellentaligat · 14/04/2025 19:34

Oh yes Dungeness. Once was enough.

A village called Slapton in South Devon, felt like a weird vibe, unwelcoming.

Liverpool, had to go regularly for a year for a work course I was doing. Really don't want to offend any Liverpudlians - it was just very outside my comfort zone.

Slapton was badly hit in the Second World War. I think that’s why it feels so empty. There was a huge hotel on the front but that was lost in the war. I think it leaves its mark.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 14/04/2025 19:36

The Louvre - makes me ill every time I go.

A housing estate just off the road where I live. Went once to walk the dog and couldn’t get away fast enough. Feels oppressive and weird and full of secrets. It’s a very posh estate, too, not run down. I reckon it’s built on some Iron Age burial ground.

flowersmakemehappy · 14/04/2025 19:36

Yes I agree with Wroxham…very strange place. Also Coleford in the Forest of Dean has strange vibes. Both places we’ve visited whilst on holiday but won’t rush back to either unfortunately

One all….

True but I was really responding to the stupidity of thr pp saying "The North" when 'The North' is a large area. As us the the South. In reality,, although I am a proud Northerner, I actually like some areas of the South!

goodnightgrumble · 14/04/2025 19:38

Retford. Just something I couldn't put my finger on. Only the town centre though. There is a lovely square but something just didn't feel right.

Lonelycrab · 14/04/2025 19:40

Crawley

ScrambledSmegs · 14/04/2025 19:42

Not weirded out as such, but Stansted Mountfichet Castle. It's not original, it was built in the 1980s on the site of the original castle as a 'Living Museum'. It really gets to me that it looks like a castle, but it isn't one, it's just someone's idea of what it probably looked like.

Funny how brains work.

Teaandtoastserveddaily · 14/04/2025 19:43

Weird village near Bridlington called Nafferton. Bloody weird place. Hated it.

Tinklyclock · 14/04/2025 19:43

Thetford forest. Seriously creepy.

Shovealoadon · 14/04/2025 19:09

Could have written most of your post @dewfirst! Yes to that stretch of A34 and used to have to drive it a lot but thankfully moved away and much less frequent now, was always a relief to get past that stretch of road. Knowing about the frequency and number of fatalities definitely contributed to the unease especially in bad weather.

Tower of London, literally hair at the back of neck standing up going up the spiral staircase to the towards a small wooden door and sense of sadness. Found out after about the lost Princes in the Tower and made me feel cold/ sick.

Rural East Devon. The house my family moved to was in the middle of nowhere, in v remote countryside. The things we saw there still haunt me, black shapes moving in and out of the house, even in daylight but 10x worse at night. Sense of being watched through windows, we always closed the curtains before dark. None of us liked going to the furthest part of the house (a granny annexe extension) freezing cold (even with heating on), v strange vibe quiet. A figure of a woman was seen down there a few times by different family who had stayed over. I never lingered long enough to investigate that one myself but dealt with enough in the main house. Wild horses couldn’t drag me back!

Holy crap, you have properly given me the shivers there @Shovealoadon. I have recurring dreams very like what you have described - about the furthest recesses of an old house I am living in that I go in very rarely, because for some reason it they are too terrifying. I expect I will have it tonight now!

Goathland, creepy place. And the drive 'over the tops' from Goathland to Whitby. Can't even put it into words so this won't make any sense, but it feels to me like the air is buzzing and incredibly oppressive, like when you were a kid and you'd stand under a pylon and hear/feel that electrical buzzing sensation. Creeped me out.

This might be because of the listening station at Fylingdales. The car radio used to randomly switch off in that area although that hasn't happened for a while now.

RareMaker · 14/04/2025 14:29

Sheppey.

A place called Totton near the new forest

Harwich

Totton - Fuck yes….

GreenTeacup · 14/04/2025 19:47

I have travelled the UK extensively and have been to many of these places. I don’t agree with most of them except Chesil Beach. The roar from the waves is unlike anything I have heard in this country and with it being stone underfoot, it makes you feel quite unstable.

I did visit a fort once that is steeped in history. Where it is situated is off putting but I was fine until I entered the fort. I just felt really out of sorts - almost dazed and cloud like. The fort is circular with a courtyard in the middle. It was a fairly busy day.

They had some buildings that displayed WW2 memorabilia. I had finished looking and told my DH that I would meet him in the courtyard to wait for him on a bench. I can’t fully explain what happened next - I was just sitting there when the sound suddenly cut out and it was as if the breeze suddenly stopped. I was suddenly aware of being in a very different time although the courtyard was now empty. Then suddenly the noise and breeze returned and I was back. It only lasted about 10 seconds.

I have attended ghost walks, been to many historic buildings and sites and never experienced anything like that before or since.

Omg I went to Luton uni too in the mid to late nineties and I had exactly the same experience. I never felt safe there and there were definitely no go areas for students.

I felt I had no choice to go there because I did
so badly at my A levels

left and never went back

I stayed in halls in Milliners Way in my first year which were quite a way from the main uni campus in town. There was an underpass I hated walking through and on one occasion when walking back to my flat through that underpass (I was walking with my then boyfriend and another male friend) I was mockingly groped by a man who was part of a much bigger group of men walking in the opposite direction. It was horrible.

The centre of Bolton when all the spiced-up zombies are out can be grim. I took some foreign students there once and they couldn't believe the place.

The centre of Bury isn't much better - it appears to be comprised entirely of vape shops and the people just look defeated, even the ones not on spice.

All of Rochdale.

All of Wigan.

and Eccles...

Basingstoke in late 1980s

Thetford forest. Seriously creepy.

No way! Is there anything specific that creeps you out or just a general vibe? I used to love going there as a kid so curious if I missed something!

ilovesushi · 14/04/2025 19:50

Anewuser · 14/04/2025 16:10

I came on to say exactly the same. Used to drive through it regularly and it always gave me the shivers.

Drove through it last year for the first time with DH. We were taking an alternate route and had never heard of Avebury. We got really good vibes from our drive. Beautiful countryside, feeling of awe/ wonder even before we reached the stone circles. It does feel properly ancient and you can feel the weight of time and history.

Thats because anywhere outside the M25 is full of dragons and sea monsters obviously.

My mother would agree😂
I’m a southerner but have lived in the north for twenty years. I would never go back south now and when I visit family on the south coast I can’t wait to return to my adopted home.

I love Northumbria and we go quite a lot but had never been to Berwick, I assumed it was a bit like Alnwick - it was not, it was just all a bit sad.
Luckily we had rented a lovely house with friends so had a great time anyway.
I do love Holy Island though, I suppos its a bit eerie but thast part of its charm

Two different places

North Berwick is in Scotland, Berwick is a little north of Newcastle on the Scottish border.
