What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

lydney Forest of Dean weird weird vibes there, Sheffield and I’ve never been but I always feel u ease just at the mention of Brighton. I know loads of people who love Brighton but I can’t imagine ever going there.

dungeness. It’s like a nuclear holocaust has happened and there’s nothing left but a few people living in sheds.

Dungeness is my favourite place. It's bleakness is beautiful and the people who live their seem so orher-worldly. Plus the light there is stunning.

Chatham, Medway. Makes me itch

Agreed.

Mam Tor is really eerie.

Top of Kinder Scout too - I hike there regularly but it can be very eerie, especially in poor weather with low visibility.

I’m the same with Brighton, also Cambridge. Love Sheffield though

There’s a stretch of the A34 through Oxfordshire, between Chieveley and Didcot, that gives me the heebies every time I drive it. It’s horrible. There have been a LOT of fatalities along that part and the road is hideous, just drops away at the sides and the hills are madness. Annoyingly I have to drive it a lot.

I felt very weird vibes at the Tower of London. Maybe knew too much of the history. I’ve not felt like that at other bloodthirsty sites though.

Although there was a part of the cathedral at St David’s that was just icy cold, the rest was very pleasant and it was a boiling hot day, but it was one of the side chapel at the altar end, so cold.

Completely agree with this…. that stretch of the A34 is utterly weird.

A village called Slapton in South Devon, felt like a weird vibe, unwelcoming.

Liverpool, had to go regularly for a year for a work course I was doing. Really don't want to offend any Liverpudlians - it was just very outside my comfort zone.

Look up the history of Slapton Sands. Very sad loss of 749 USA troops who were disembarking from US landing ships when German torpedo boats attacked them.
A tragic loss of so many young lives.

qotsa · 14/04/2025 18:55

@Tiswa @MyKingdomForACat not relevant to the thread really, but it you ever happen to go to Porto, go to The Grand Hotel there. Literally like stepping back in time. So bizarre but also fascinating. Slightly odd, creepy vibes. Didn’t help that we were having a little snoop around at night because we arrived late.

Im a bit scared of reservoirs. 🤣

My dad had a book about a town that was flooded for a reservoir. I can't remember what town/reservoir and Google isn't helpful but apparently every few years the water level drops and you can see the bell tower in the church and some of the buildings. I think it said that because of the way the water is reacting with the bell or something, it keeps it algea/plant free so when the bell emerges, it still rings even on a still day. The book had a grainy photo of the semi flooded town and in my imagation there were people stood in the water. Properly scared me!

That and those giant plug holes in reservoirs to manage overflows.

And my dad telling me once that if someone drilled a hole in the right place, it would cause the wall to explode and all the water would rush down drowning everyone.

Plus the sheer intimidating structure of them.

And! The possibility of falling over the top in a canoe. That is very specific. 🤣

Not sure if this is the one you are thinking of, but Capel Celyn in Wales was flooded on the say so of Liverpool City Council. It’s still a very sore point for many of us Welsh people.

I've mentioned this on here before on a similar thread.

The Italian Chapel on Orkney ... couldn't go near the place, felt as if there was an unnatural force pushing me away and I got a full body shiver and cold sweat.
Never felt like that anywhere else, very strange.

That's very weird. I live in Orkney and I love it. There are bits which have a strange vibe, mainly because of the liminal nature of the place and the history is very close to the surface, there are a couple of Neolithic burial mounds which I don't like (Curween especially, very odd). But the Italian Chapel is pretty much a universally loved Place and folk come from literally all over the world to visit it. Strange how some places affect us so.

I’m from Dungeness and I love it! I do know what you mean tho

Dontbeabitterlemon · 14/04/2025 19:01

Doncaster train station. Can’t describe the feeling. Just like I wanted to run.

An ex-mining village in Wales, can’t remember what it was called but felt very bleak.

agree with north Berwick but couldn’t put my finger on why.

Belfast - felt very tense and on edge.

Meggie2008 · 14/04/2025 19:02

Spent a lot of time on the Isle of Mull when I was younger, it's a stunning place, but there's a forest called Ardmore there that just feels wrong on every level. There's something ancient in that forest, I'm convinced.
Last time we walked there, both myself and my dad were seeing shadows coming out the trees and creeping through the ruined village. My mum couldn't see them, it was odd.

LacyRuby · 14/04/2025 19:03

I agree with Slapton Sands in Devon. It feels very strange and lonely. Lots of sadness vibes almost like it's heart is broken. Lots of American soldiers arrived there to practise in WW2. They also took over lots of local cottages and farms in the area too.

Lunaballoon · 14/04/2025 19:04

Corfe Castle in Dorset. It had a bit of a “Village of the Damned” vibe about it. Went into a pub for dinner, chatter at the bar went silent as soon as we walked in. Sat at a table in the empty dining area and immediately someone came over and slapped a reserved sign on it. Very unwelcoming to say the least!

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/04/2025 19:04

Port Meirion - always gave me the willies as a kid!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 14/04/2025 19:07

Wigtown in Dumfries & Galloway. It's a small town famous for its secondhand book shops. When we visited, the town was shrouded in fog. Only the town though, the surrounding countryside was entirely fog-free. There was a sinister, League of Gentlemen vibe everywhere.

Buckfast Abbey. We stayed in a holiday house right beside it and it had a seriously unpleasant vibe. I couldn't sleep at all.

The Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle. Fascinating but it has so much history and loss there is a oppressive atmosphere. I was fortunate enough to see parts of the complex not normally open to the public including the BBC room which would have been used on the event of nuclear war in the Cold War era. Eerie. I was quite keen to leave.

Could have written most of your post @dewfirst! Yes to that stretch of A34 and used to have to drive it a lot but thankfully moved away and much less frequent now, was always a relief to get past that stretch of road. Knowing about the frequency and number of fatalities definitely contributed to the unease especially in bad weather.

Tower of London, literally hair at the back of neck standing up going up the spiral staircase to the towards a small wooden door and sense of sadness. Found out after about the lost Princes in the Tower and made me feel cold/ sick.

Rural East Devon. The house my family moved to was in the middle of nowhere, in v remote countryside. The things we saw there still haunt me, black shapes moving in and out of the house, even in daylight but 10x worse at night. Sense of being watched through windows, we always closed the curtains before dark. None of us liked going to the furthest part of the house (a granny annexe extension) freezing cold (even with heating on), v strange vibe quiet. A figure of a woman was seen down there a few times by different family who had stayed over. I never lingered long enough to investigate that one myself but dealt with enough in the main house. Wild horses couldn’t drag me back!

I'm in agreement on Harrogate feeling off. I feel the genteel tea shop vibe is anachronistic and fake. Feels very whitewashed to me.

A friend of mine was subject to a horrible homophobic attack at a hotel in Harrogate.
