What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Totnes. It's meant to be a hippy, alternative town but I find it weird and unfriendly. All the hippies are actually extremely wealthy people in elasticated trousers.

Whenever I walk through the town I always get this sense that everyone around me will suddenly stop, slowly turn towards me, and then silently point at me, as if to alert the other locals that I'm not a member of the Totnes cult. Weird.

That's exactly how I feel about Stroud. Not surprising as the two places are softened likened to each other.

Suzuki76 · 14/04/2025 17:52

Glenrothes. Felt like we were about to get robbed at all times and the whole place was just a massive half empty shopping mall. That's the town.

That should be often likened😜

Oh, Sally in the Woods too! Near Bath.

Irlam (edge of Manchester). Worked there for 3 weeks. Seriously weird and backwards place/people.

My dad once took me for a walk in Irlam. He had a thing for taking me for walks in weird post-industrial areas with shattered windows and leaky canals, I don't know why. Anyway this would be the late 90s and the only person we saw on this weird liminal walk around disused buildings and fenced-off chemical plants was a one eyed man flying an eagle.

Yes!

Some of East Sussex including Lewes.

Felt uneasy on the Norfolk coast.

The A74(M) southbound and parts of the M6 especially around Shap.

Some parts of the M1 especially around Sheffield.

Notfolk coast.....Try living amongst it ........ I'm not 'local' and after 20 years, am still 'not local'

Trough of Boland. Lovely picturesque villages with a sinister undertone. Drive through but don't stop is the best advice.

dungeness. It’s like a nuclear holocaust has happened and there’s nothing left but a few people living in sheds.

I only know of this place thanks to Bob Mortimer 🤣

For me: Bury. Wembley. Most places outside central London - filthy, grimy uncared for and full of weirdos.

clinellwipe · 14/04/2025 17:57

NOT UK, but the creepiest/weirdest place I’ve been to is Hellfire Club on Mountpelier just outside Dublin . It definitely felt like we shouldn’t be there and there was a sinister presence - I’m not a woo person but I was glad to leave

Really? The entire UK outside of central London is filthy, grimy, uncared for and full of weirdos?

Thats because anywhere outside the M25 is full of dragons and sea monsters obviously.

Edited

Don't forget the werewolves and the hobgoblins ! 😆

ClareBlue · 14/04/2025 17:58

And witches were burnt on Pendal hill overlooking it. Get to Lancaster as quick as you can if you are ever there. Someone told me at least 25 000 visitors have never returned from there just in this century. I believe them.

Oxford

It’s funny how Oxford has been mentioned a lot. I’ve visited only twice but both times felt disappointment there; just a weird soul-less energy.

Miyagi99 · 14/04/2025 17:59

Denbigh Moors.

I always find reservoirs a bit creepy. All those drowned buildings and trees and the way the water's unnaturally held back.

Im a bit scared of reservoirs. 🤣

My dad had a book about a town that was flooded for a reservoir. I can't remember what town/reservoir and Google isn't helpful but apparently every few years the water level drops and you can see the bell tower in the church and some of the buildings. I think it said that because of the way the water is reacting with the bell or something, it keeps it algea/plant free so when the bell emerges, it still rings even on a still day. The book had a grainy photo of the semi flooded town and in my imagation there were people stood in the water. Properly scared me!

That and those giant plug holes in reservoirs to manage overflows.

And my dad telling me once that if someone drilled a hole in the right place, it would cause the wall to explode and all the water would rush down drowning everyone.

Plus the sheer intimidating structure of them.

And! The possibility of falling over the top in a canoe. That is very specific. 🤣

Portree felt quite "thrusting". Like that annoying person at work who wants everyone to know when they've arrived in the morning. Maybe it's because it's the only proper civilisation on Skye. 🤣 I do like Syke though.

Camden doesn't freak me out but I do find it soulless and empty. You know when someone has "dead eyes". That is what Camdem feels like to me. I think it's probably a bit of a victim of its own success. A bit all fur coat and no knickers because it's pretending to be this fashionable, trendy place but it's too commercial now to have that energy.

Agree about Camden, never liked it, thought it was a bit of a dump with a lot of people who were aspiring to be ‘cool’/ thought they were too ‘cool’

I was going to say this, too. We were driving there yesterday.
Miles of flatness; black earth, criss crossed by muddy dykes underneath the huge endless sky, makes me feel on the uneasy side of uncomfortable.
I can't remember the name of the author who ascribed her failing mental health to living in that landscape, but I empathise.

Gosh yes, Lincolnshire is a strange place, me and ds drove from North Wales to a place in Lincolnshire to get a part for my van and we both agreed that it was a weird place, just miles and miles of flat nothing. The dykes either side of the roads ( that were in poor condition) freaked us both out. The dark skies were a sight to behold though, beautiful.

Im not a fan of Cannock chase either, especially near the war cemetery there, me and dh encountered some very odd people, couldn’t wait to leave.

whowhatwhen · 14/04/2025 18:01

Hook in Surrey - bland and ugly and like a corridor to Chessington World of Adventures. Horrific looking place.

Hazey19 · 14/04/2025 18:01

Aberystwyth. weird vibe.

Gloucester. Just grim.
Bristol. I've never had a good experience there, and I lived there for 2 years!

Agree. They've spent a lot of money on Gloucester in recent years. Mentioned how awful it was to a friend from Cheltenham ( we went to a concert at the Cathedral. Very pretty there. Walking there absolutely hideous ). She said that they could spend any amount of money they liked on the city of Gloucester but the absolute dross who lived there would still be the same. Have never been back.
My youngest son was at Uni in Bristol. Hated visiting the city. Always felt un safe.

Yes!

That'll be the timeslip effect - if you believe Tom Slemens. He's a great story teller, I'll give him that.

Hoppinggreen · 14/04/2025 18:02

Speaking of Todmorden
My DH pointed out that in German it means "Death Murder"
I grew up not far from there and it was Hebden Bridges scarier cousin but as house prices and general hipsterness pushed people out of Hebden they ended up in Tod and now Tod is getting trendier too.

Moonlightdust · 14/04/2025 18:02

Milton Keynes is depressing.

The weirdest place I’ve visited is Coombe Abbey in Coventry. Very spooky experience there.

I think you mean the "Trough of Bowland" but I get your point.

I feel the same about Saddleworth Moor in the South Pennines just outside Manchester..
