What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Masham, had a really horrible feeling driving through it

Read up about the history, and there is a whole load of fairly recent druid stuff/ history in that area.

I'm sure it's been demolished now but Robin Hood Gardens in Poplar. I didn't feel unsafe or anything, it was just incredibly dystopian. I had a freaky recurring dream about the place for years afterwards.

I think it's gone or is going now (The Robin Hood flats).
I find those old estates (like the Aylesbury Estate in South London) fascinating.
They have the stereotype of being "sink" estates full of crime but if I walk through them I generally feel safe.
The buildings have been neglected so they often look dreadful but I quite like the original concepts of the estates.
They don't really weird me out ....just make me feel a bit sad.

Hoylake

Why? Just out of curiosity.

mummysmagicmedicine · 14/04/2025 15:36

Coventry- felt lifeless
Honiton- off vibes all around
Newquay- lovely beaches but didn’t help we stayed in a haunted hotel 😳. (Didn’t know when we booked)
Farnborough- no particular reason
Eastleigh- no particular reason

With both the Black Sheep and Theakston's breweries there I've never spent more than about 30 minutes sober in Masham!

Lydd in Kent and Canvey Island. Both feel like stuck in the 80’s skinhead era.

I've never been to Canvey but I felt uncomfortable in Lydd. I think all of the area in Romney Marsh feels a bit odd. A bunch of my ancestors came from there, but I don'tfeel any affinity with the place.

Some of the moors in the Peak District / North West. I love hiking and they are really beautiful, and I love the solitude. However, bits of them have such an eerie, bleak feeling to them, like something terrible has happened. It’s hard to put a finger on, especially the area above Glossop, off Snake Pass.

Edited

Those moors have an unusually large number of reported haunting. I live very close to them but to me me they just feel like home.

The Big Pit in south Wales.
It was foggy and February. It looked like parts of a concentration camp. I literally shivered when we saw the communal shower block.
The staff weee very nice though and I enjoyed the tour

I went there recently and loved it, and the whole area; that nature reserve is really beautiful in a bleak way (I love bleak).

It's amazing. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Isle of wight. I think perhaps because I felt very unwelcome there though.

I don't really get the fuss about Camden either , it's just expensive and busy. It smells like the 90s there so that's one thing in its favour.

Edited

What is it with the Isle of Wight (I love it!).

My friend did not like Eastbourne but she felt watched all the time because she is black.

muddyford · 14/04/2025 15:40

Plymouth. Really bleak and unfriendly feeling. Like Milton Keynes On Sea but with fewer trees.

Pandimoanymum · 14/04/2025 15:41

Coventry. Not creepy or anything like that, it's just grim.

Itsjustlife · 14/04/2025 15:42

WATFORD
Having been down from north midlands for daughters birthday at Harry Potter we stayed either side.
Driving through looking for a restaurant it felt unsafe, gangs of men stood around. Lots of blacked out cars.
The men, and I know i'll get challenged on this buts its a fact, were intimidating and non english, looking into every car going past.
Uneasy

I lived on Canvey Island for a while. Did not like the people at all.

InveterateWineDrinker · 14/04/2025 15:44

My friend did not like Eastbourne but she felt watched all the time because she is black.

You've just dredged up a repressed memory of going to Llanelli with a black colleague about 20 years ago. We went into a busy-ish pub looking for something to eat and the entire place just went stone cold silent. Every head turned to us, and stayed fixed on us as we walked to the bar. The bartender spoke to her as if she had just stepped off the boat.

We had one drink each, with everyone in the pub staring at us, before we scarpered back to the hotel.

Hoylake

I lived in Hoylake for many years. Beautiful place - possibly the best place I’v ever lived. What weirded you out ?

Birkenhead was odd. Just felt a bit empty and abandoned. Maybe I went on the wrong day!

My former step-mother lives nearby. You probably heard the sound of dalmatians howling...

It’s beautiful isn’t it? I can’t imagine anyone finding it uncomfortable or strange so curious why!

Trundlebus · 14/04/2025 15:47

Bracknell and Basingstoke. Both soulless clone towns. Yes I'm a southerner born and bred up the road, but lived "in the north" for many years. Wokingham, however, gives off better vibes.

Umbilicat · 14/04/2025 15:48

The train from Victoria down through Kent via Bromley is like a tableau vivant of broken Britain

Shcab · 14/04/2025 15:48

Chester. I’m aware that I should like it and it looks lovely in places but whenever I go there, whether it’s for shopping or for an evening out, I feel so uncomfortable and on edge and can’t wait to leave. I just can’t settle there.

Exmouth. Gave me a horrible, bleak feeling.

I second whoever said Saddleworth Moor - what a truly miserable area to drive through.

The fens make me feel uncomfortable and panicky.

Ripon in North Yorkshire makes me feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic, but I love Harrogate.

Lyme Regis felt ‘wrong’ but I can’t put my finger on why.

WearyAuldWumman · 14/04/2025 15:48

London. It's too big.

Woodythewonderpony · 14/04/2025 15:49

East Sussex. Not sure why, can’t stand Lewes, feels wrong. Horrible experience in Brighton when a small child after visiting my nan in St Michael’s Place when waiting for a bus 😵‍💫 - think there may have been some sort of eclipse. My mum’s family all come from East Sussex (Brighton/Ashdown Forest) so should feel at home but nope, you can keep all of it.

Live in West Sussex and it feels like home - yes Chanctonbury Ring and some parts of the Downs have lots of Folklore attached to them but don’t feel the oppression that I get with East Sussex 🤷‍♀️

Every city in Wales. Very inbred feeling. Really dank and obnoxious people and very backwards thinking.
Cartmel for similar reasons.
stoke on Trent very weird place.

Wow.

Letchworth (Garden City) - some lovely green spaces, unusual houses, and beautiful tree-lined roads BUT awful shops (think Wilkos & The Range - even Next and M&S didn't stick around), nowhere to go out at all, e.g. nice restaurants or proper old pubs due to its Quaker roots, questionable Brexit-voting people and generally just no 'vibe' whatsoever. Weird.

It's funny, I find Welwyn (garden city) a bit odd. Attractive, but empty. Feels abandoned.
