What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Selfridges. Went in once years ago and couldn't work out how to get out again. Proper panicked feeling that I was trapped.

I got that same feeling in Ikea at Brent Cross - panic stations. Horrid. I'm fine in other branches, just not that one.

Lydney and the Forest of Dean have a weird vibe.

I agree, isn’t it weird I was so excited to relax in amongst the trees in Forest of Dean but the place terrified me. Strange for me as im
used to walking in woods alone a lot and I was with DH this time.

ZiggySdust · 14/04/2025 14:24

Letchworth (Garden City) - some lovely green spaces, unusual houses, and beautiful tree-lined roads BUT awful shops (think Wilkos & The Range - even Next and M&S didn't stick around), nowhere to go out at all, e.g. nice restaurants or proper old pubs due to its Quaker roots, questionable Brexit-voting people and generally just no 'vibe' whatsoever. Weird.

Glen Coe. Serious heebie-jeebies driving through there once. I never want to go near the place again.

I drive through Glencoe regularly. It's an atmospheric place but I've never had the heebie-jeebies. Would be interesting to know whether people who drive through it without knowing what happened there feel anything.

Justchillinhere · 14/04/2025 14:26

We rented a large wooden chalet in Strathpeffer Scotland on Airbnb years ago, 3 people in separate rooms had weird experiences, I woke up sitting on the middle of the bedroom floor, heard people running and laughing along the hallway but there was no-one there, it's a nice place but I won't be back, didn't leave a review 👻

Gonksmum · 14/04/2025 14:27

Porthgain, near St Davids, Pembrokeshire.

Squirrelsnut · 14/04/2025 14:27

I went to Grime's Graves years ago, it was fascinating but the surrounding area felt very odd indeed, like it was out of normal time. I didn't hate it but it was oddly dreamlike.
Thetford Abbey was a weird and oppressive place.

Good.
Stay away.
All of you.

I just love the friendliness of the North that you don't get down here. Family are Northern but I was raised down South.

Flyingwands · 14/04/2025 14:28

Every city in Wales. Very inbred feeling. Really dank and obnoxious people and very backwards thinking.
Cartmel for similar reasons.
stoke on Trent very weird place.

Interesting question. I have only ever driven through Glen Coe once, years ago. It felt overwhelmingly sad. Was that because of what I knew about the place or was it the atmosphere of the place itself?

RareMaker · 14/04/2025 14:29

Sheppey.

A place called Totton near the new forest

Harwich

I live in London and I hate the bit around Hatton Garden/the Bleeding Heart. Such bad, black vibes.

mogtheexcellent · 14/04/2025 14:31

Goole

went there on a uni field trip. coach got lost and we ended up in a residential area where the locals just stood and stared at us with a grim look on their faces. coach got the hell out of there and went on to the humber bridge (still have the souvenir pencil). still no idea what we were supposed to be visiting in Goole.

xteac · 14/04/2025 14:31

Gloucester. Just grim.
Bristol. I've never had a good experience there, and I lived there for 2 years!

Lovelyview · 14/04/2025 14:32

I always find reservoirs a bit creepy. All those drowned buildings and trees and the way the water's unnaturally held back.

MaggieMistletoe · 14/04/2025 14:33

Peterborough reminds me of something from a post-apocalyptic film. Sad because you can tell it was probably nice once.

Maitri108 · 14/04/2025 14:34

There's a Saxon chapel at the end of a long walk through a desolate area lined with ancient oaks. It's called St Peter on the Wall.

It has a quote in Saxon on a sign:

"In this place the word is revealed to you."

The Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall - Church in Bradwell-on-Sea, Maldon

The Chapel of St Peters-on-the-Wall is the oldest church in England, situated on the Essex coast.

Heaven's waiting room! I do agree though, I lived there once and there's a nasty undercurrent.

Mansfield, Notts. Feels really insular and odd. Have only had to go there a few times for work and each time I could not wait to leave, it really feels like something out of The League of Gentlemen. Having said that I do have a good friend who was born there and left who feels the same

hahhaha - my dad used to say the only good thing about Mansfield was the road out of it! 🤣

Howmanycatsistoomany · 14/04/2025 13:21

Yeah, it's got a strange vibe. I really don't like the Peak District (and I lived on the edge of it for years).
Also, Glencoe.

Gosh I feel like this too. Starts with Glossop for me, I feel sick just thinking about the place.

Summatoruvva · 14/04/2025 14:36

For me Glastonbury has a horrible oppressive atmosphere but my mum finds it restorative. The Pilgrim pub on the high street chills me to my core.
Newent in Gloustershire creeps me out too. The people seem hostile.

BakedAlaska12 · 14/04/2025 14:36

Derby

MyKingdomForACat · 14/04/2025 14:36

What is weird about Thurso? Interested x

TheStigarette · 14/04/2025 14:37

Harrogate. Just such a weird prim vibe. On paper it should be so nice but i really dislike it . Gives me the ick.
