To think a (not Paris) Disney holiday is possible for the average working family?

DD is nearly 9 and has wanted to go on a Disney holiday for years.

We took her sibling who is 11 years older to Florida, before DD was born (not thinking we’d be able to have another) and it was a once in a lifetime experience and nowhere near as much money back then- we both also had better paid jobs and our mortgage wasn’t as high add onto that the COL.

We wouldn’t do Paris for personal reasons I’d rather not go into.

Do any average families do any Disney holidays?

Currently we have to save hard for a week in Spain!

How do people do Disney?

@noquinoa oh and I must add if it’s America you are talking about wouldn’t go there in the current climate if you paid me

That is absolutely fair enough and I agree.

I do understand that people aren’t the same so I am expressing my opinion as I am also entitled.
To me, Disney is a ridiculous rip off. Tacky consumerism at its best. There are far nicer places to see in the world.

There are plenty of other beautiful places to see. I’ve travelled around the world a few times, but I like DW too. It’s difficult to compare.

well I wouldn’t deprive myself or my family of holidays for years to go there like some people have said here.

I can’t understand people saying they didn’t go on holiday for years to save to go to Disneyland. I’d much rather just have a cheaper holiday once a year and not bother with Disneyland. Went once on a school tour as a teenager and even back then thought it was extremely tacky and expensive. Not something I’d have an interest in at all. There are plenty of cheaper, better, alternatives.

I’d rather save up for a holiday I really wanted to do over multiple years rather than do something cheap, I’ve found as I’ve got older I’ve become much fussier! Just as well we’re all allowed our own opinions and to spend money how we wish.

Yes exactly it is just as well. But one thing I must ask is what do you mean by “Something cheap” ?

OtherCoraline · 14/04/2025 19:40

Actually, now that I think of it: I think that, in answer to the OP title, it could be possible for the average family to go but I’d imagine it was once, twice at a push and potentially could wipe out savings or pay it off on credit cards if they knew that they can make the payments. If we budgeted say £10k, that’d be a quarter of our savings and doesn’t seem worth it to us, hence we’re doing Disneyland Paris. Although, as PP has said, it’s nowhere near as grand or impressive as DW.

leakycauldron · 14/04/2025 19:43

It's the park tickets themselves that add the $$$

So maybe think about what parks you would def want to do and what ones you aren't as bothered about.
We don't do sea world for example.

Booking as far in advance as you can, can make it easier to budget. We booked this years August trip, March last year!

It would be handy to know what your ideal budget would be and people can advise on that.

Sea World isn’t even Disney though..?

Park tickets are the only cheap bit. Unless you add the lightening lanes. It’s everything else that adds up.

Well for example if I could only save £2000 a year for a holiday, I’d rather go every 2 years and spend £4000 doing something I wanted, it’s the same concept really? In terms of what I’d find cheap, it’s subjective of course, I don’t think I could find a holiday I would enjoy for the 4 of us for under £5k. Not these days at least. Thankfully we can afford more than that a year so we don’t forgo holidays, but I absolutely would if I didn’t have enough to do what I wanted, I wouldn’t go away for the sake of it.

I know what you mean. But I went to Portugal for a month with my child and it cost a fraction of the cost of a trip to Disney. There was no theme park but my DC played on the beach every day and got to experience a different culture. I wouldn’t call the trip “cheap” or insuperior or call myself unfussy because i think Disney is tacky and a rip off. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though as you say.

Have you been to Disney World in Orlando, and if so which parks did you go to?

I wouldn’t touch Orlando with a bargepole you couldn’t pay me to go there. The epitome of tack. Have been to Orlando but not Disneyland itself . Paris was enough for me.

Right. You are slagging off somewhere you have not even been to. I thought so.

TeenLifeMum · 14/04/2025 19:56

For our family of 5, 10 days in Orlando at theme parks (we did universal rather than Disney) cost £11k.

The two comparable cost trips we’ve done are Vancouver to Calgary and New York, Chicago and Wisconsin lakes. I preferred both of these to Orlando but dc absolutely loved universal (I really enjoyed it and had been twice with dh pre dc). The memories dc have from the Orlando trip are very special.

Is a £10k holiday achievable for most families in the UK? Probably not imo.

leakycauldron · 14/04/2025 19:56

@noquinoa well no sea world isn't Disney .... nor is universal.

But people are there and tend to try and do it all while they are there... one it's near impossible to do all the parks in a 2 week holiday. Especially with kids.
Plus it costs a fortune.

I have been to Disneyland and the queues , the annoying music everywhere and the rip off food was enough for me. My dh has been to both and said they were similar. I’m sorry if my opinion offends you. Everyone is different. I’m sure you wouldn’t go to some of the places I’ve been either .

SeaBaseAlpha · 14/04/2025 19:59

Totally fine with all these culturally superior people turning their nose up at Disney., makes more room for the rest of us. I queued for 25 minutes for Rise of the Resistance yesterday!

Tbf to your dad, it’s not bad either. Cool and dark if anything.

icelollycraving · 14/04/2025 20:08

Dh and I both work full time. We haven’t had a holiday abroad in 15 YEARS 😳
We used to earn more, had more disposable money, only holiday now is a week with family. Depressing but it’s just how it is. I was discussing it with dh a few days ago. Some friends go away a few times a year, go out a lot, much bigger houses, often just the man working. I’m assuming with the younger ones, mortgages over a long term but the others? Who knows, debt or saving?!

Ok. I was just curious, as you assumed I wouldn’t have been to where you have.
