To think a (not Paris) Disney holiday is possible for the average working family?

DD is nearly 9 and has wanted to go on a Disney holiday for years.

We took her sibling who is 11 years older to Florida, before DD was born (not thinking we’d be able to have another) and it was a once in a lifetime experience and nowhere near as much money back then- we both also had better paid jobs and our mortgage wasn’t as high add onto that the COL.

We wouldn’t do Paris for personal reasons I’d rather not go into.

Do any average families do any Disney holidays?

Currently we have to save hard for a week in Spain!

How do people do Disney?

Ok. I was just curious, as you assumed I wouldn’t have been to where you have.

I’m sure I have been to at least 1 place you haven’t been to and vice versa. The odds of us both being in all the exact same places are very slim, I don’t even live in the uk . This is just silly.

Went to Disney World with my foster family when I was 12. It was awful and a waste of money, even though someone outside that family were paying. 2 hour queues, nasty food half of us couldn't stomach - packed with additives we couldn't stomach, and accommodation was below average.
Rather do centre parks or a weekend near a British amusement park: better food, no bizarre atmosphere and most of all no rude/insane Americans or dappy Disney fans!
You'll save a fortune as well.

We go in October. We booked it last July and have been paying it off monthly and putting extra aside for spending money. We’re comfortable but certainly not what I’d call rich. DH works in a specialised role where he can do a lot of paid overtime so he’s been doing a lot of extra hours. We’ve cut back on things like eating out, I’ve massively reduced spending on clothes, makeup etc, I have a company car so we’re only paying to run one car. We’re paying £600 a month off the holiday and putting an extra £300 aside each month for spending money. We’re also staying off site and I booked our attraction tickets through floridatix. Not gonna lie, it’s been tight but as a family we made the decision to have a frugal year to be able to do Florida.

Some companies are offering deals as far ahead as 2028, certainly doable if you’ve got 3 years to save and pay it off.

I don’t live in the UK either. But yes, I do find it interesting that someone who travels a lot is happy to slag off a place they have not been to.

It's very expensive for what it is. You could have a much more fun time elsewhere. Disney is such clichéd rubbish.its overpriced and hyped for what you get. A week on a greek island would be a third of the price (you could go three times!)!and just as a amazing
My kids have never once mentioned it or been sad the haven't been.

Expensive for what it is? Cliched rubbish. But yet never actually taken the kids.

i love a good armchair expert who has zero experience of something (and probably wouldn’t know the cost either) telling people what is bad about something. Bore off

BCBird · 14/04/2025 20:28

I would say this is classed as a 'big holiday' that you have to save for. In my experience the people I know who have been would probably not have any holiday the previous year or a UK holiday so that they could save enough for Disney.

Boreded · 14/04/2025 20:29

And stop calling Walt Disney World in Orlando ’Disneyland’ - Disneyland is in California.

@TheIceBear you are a pain too, claim to have been to Orlando (which in the last decade had had an entire facelift and you’d not even recognise it) but don’t know what’s land vs world 👍

I know what you mean. But I went to Portugal for a month with my child and it cost a fraction of the cost of a trip to Disney. There was no theme park but my DC played on the beach every day and got to experience a different culture. I wouldn’t call the trip “cheap” or insuperior or call myself unfussy because i think Disney is tacky and a rip off. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though as you say.

Sorry I didn’t mean to offend you with the word cheap, I just meant I would choose no holiday for a period of time in order to save for the holiday I wanted to go on. The figure is somewhat irrelevant. We’ve only done Disney World and Paris once each (as parents at least), I enjoyed them and hope to go again but have other places we want to go to so they’re not a priority for us at the moment.

@Lilylouis

if you want some advice re: disney then please DM me, I LOVE helping people to find their dream holiday, whether it be a once in a lifetime or a once a year trip. Same goes for anyone else who wants some help with pricing things up or just general tips and questions.

i don’t like Disney. Why does that offend you so much ? Why are you so insistent that Disneyworld is nothing like Disneyland. Of course it’s going to be a bit similar and I HATED Disneyland. Again sorry if that offends you.

The most amazing ride ever!

My bemused Dad said he preferred the Carousel of Progress 🤣

I told my husband that and now he’s getting ready for bed loudly singing the song!! He’s a big fan of the carousel of progress! 🤣

@Boreded i could not care less about which is “land” and which is “world “ frankly. It’s all the same tacky consumerist rubbish to me.and I have been to Orlando briefly. I don’t know what you mean by “claim” it’s not a place I would chose to spend much time in. I don’t know why Disney fans get so offended by people who don’t like Disney . So much so you are actually accusing me of lying.

Pinkroom · 14/04/2025 21:39

We have managed to go several times over the years, we earn average UK salaries but we prioritised the holiday. So we work overtime and really save, no takeaways or expensive days out etc whilst doing so. Always booked everything seperately. If you can also go in term time that saves a lot. Take packed lunches to the parks when there to save on spending money. It is doable but may have to cut back elsewhere.

SwingTheMonkey · 14/04/2025 21:41

Why do people comment on threads about going to Disneyworld/land to say how much they hate it and how awful it is. Nobody gives a fuck that you’re far too cultured to enjoy it. You’re just wasting your time commenting.

TheIceBear · 14/04/2025 21:44

@SwingTheMonkey disliking Disney does not mean a person thinks they are “cultured”
. And everyone is entitled to comment on a public thread. It’s hilarious how triggered people can get by people having different opinions than them on places to visit.

Totally fine with all these culturally superior people turning their nose up at Disney., makes more room for the rest of us. I queued for 25 minutes for Rise of the Resistance yesterday!

Folk complaining about the queues just haven’t planned properly. Have a great time!

I don’t think people are necessarily triggered by the different opinions. I think people get pissed off when an OP asks a straight forward question such as ‘is Disney do-able for the average family’ and people feel compelled to pile on saying ‘oooh no it’s way too [consumerist/superficial/ blah blah] for my family’. That’s fine, but it wasn’t what was asked, so why say it? It just comes across as an opportunity to drop in some snobbery.

If someone asked for recommendations to get a trip to Thailand or a skiing holiday in the Alps they wouldn’t be met with dozens and dozens of people saying “you couldn’t pay me to go there” and the like. So why do they do it about Disney? Just scroll by? It can only be a desire to say they are culturally superior.

It’s not snobbery trust me. I just find it really sad that a lot of people see Disneyland as the ultimate goal, and the ultimate childhood dream. Particularly when it’s so expensive and not accessible to most.

NeverHadHaveHas · 14/04/2025 22:07

@TheIceBear it’s so bizarre to find it sad. Do you feel similarly sad when someone chooses to buy a BMW over a fiesta?

No I don’t but I wouldn’t class that the same at all. Are you saying Disney is the BMW and the fiesta is other holidays ? Or what do u mean exactly. And people are calling ME a snob. It’s ridiculous

No, I’m saying that a BMW is expensive and a fiesta is not so expensive. You’ve said yourself that Disney is expensive, and other holidays can be done for a fraction of the price.
Some people like expensive holidays. Some people like expensive cars.
I don’t understand why you would be sad about people choosing expensive holidays, but not when they choose other expensive items over cheaper options.

It is expensive but even aside from that if I had 10 grand to spend I’d rather go to lots of places , that aren’t America and Disney world /land/whatever . It’s not even just about the expense. I like some expensive holidays but I hate Disney. Hating Disney doesn’t mean I like cheap holidays.

BlueLimes · 14/04/2025 22:23

Why the need for the negative sneery posts? The op wasn’t asking if you’d like to go.
