Blue badge police again

Rainburstflowers · 11/04/2025 09:00

Name changes for this as I do every so often.
I have blue badge but my disability is not visible.
For the 3rs time in 2 weeks I have been challenged about not looking disabled and I am fed up of explaining myself

yesterday got out the car and this man came charging towards me shouting “oi you don’t have a blue badge”. I sighed and said “yes I do”. He then said “where did you nick that from?”
I said “I didn’t nick it from anyone I got it off eBay”
He then looked at me and said “oh right and walked off”
as if that was then ok!!!!
or it could be my built like a brick shithouse husband opened his door and got out the drivers seat.

I know I should not have said the eBay comment but I am fed up of explaining myself.

if anyone has any good comebacks please let me know

Why the need to check, if a BB is displayed though? What gives them the right, to interrogate a complete stranger?

We all know that if the Badge is displayed clearly of course nobody shouls query it.
As I said before we are talking about the nutters - for want of a better word.

LadyKenya · 15/04/2025 09:56

Some people are even being accused of the BB not being theirs. It is astonishing behaviour.

Dropthepilots · 15/04/2025 10:10

I have a BB and would fit into the “obviously disabled “ category so have never been challenged when using my badge. However many times there have been cars parked in BB spaces without a blue badge, and I’ve found that people are really blase about doing this, any pathetic excuse (I was just popping in…). Also I’ve found that people who could enforce the parking restrictions usually don’t give a shit and just shrug in a “what can you do” way. For what it’s worth, if someone challenged me on my BB I’d poke them with my white cane (yes I have a BB, no obviously I don’t drive but DH does and we only use the BB when I’m there).

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/04/2025 11:44

@Grendel7 - if you were in a blue badge space, correctly displaying your badge, would you be happy to be aggressively challenged by someone who didn't think you looked disabled enough to be using the space?

It sounds as if you are not listening to all the people on here who are disabled and have blue badges, and yet have been harassed by the blue badge police, and have felt forced to share private medical information with strangers, to justify why they have the blue badge. They are saying they hate it, and want people to stop doing it. Don't their views count for anything?

I don't think anyone is condoning the misuse of blue badge spaces or blue badges - they are just saying please stop harassing disabled people! If you think people are misusing the spaces at the supermarket, report them to Customer Services.

Getting a blue badge from ebay is illegal. You can only use legally one from your local council who consider all your answers to their questions before deciding if you are elligible. Thats the way everyone else does it,and I had been wondering why so many people had a blue badge who clearly shouldn't and why I have to limp an struggle from miles away whilst folk without badges but probably have a headache today ( aww) park in disabled bays.Consider what the fine/sentence is for illegally using one of these.

whoosh

Ohthatsabitshit · 15/04/2025 12:01

Weirdly we very much fit into the “look like you don’t need a badge as you are obviously very active” group (at least most of the time if you are unobservant) and have never been challenged. This is a shame really because I’m sure the resulting 30 minute interrogation by my unstoppable one would soon sort that out. We have once had someone ask for a lift to the buss station (presumably because they felt the car was free and so shouldn’t mind sharing). There are some very funny people in the world.

That made me laugh! Some people.

ShaunaTheDitzySheep · 15/04/2025 12:49

@Grendel7 how do you know they "clearly don't need one?" How can you even tell when most disabilities are hidden?

ClearHoldBuild · 15/04/2025 12:51

I’ve shared this before on these BB posts. When challenging a BB ends horrendously.

catwhite1 · 15/04/2025 13:05

I saw someone once get questioned by a nosey blue badge police brigade so they pulled up their trouser leg to reveal a metal leg and replied “is this disable enough for you”!

ShaunaTheDitzySheep · 15/04/2025 13:07

The moral of the story is : if someone has a BB, don't challenge them!

PensionedCruiser · 15/04/2025 13:15

@ClearHoldBuild Thank you for posting this. It shows clearly what many Blue Badge holders and their carers have to contend with. The fact that the poor man didn't even hold a driving licence makes it so much worse. They should regularly show that footage on the television.

ButterCrackers · 15/04/2025 13:19

Tell them that they can call the police right away to report you parking in a blue badge space. Tell them that you hope they get reported for wasting police time. Then take a photo of them / say it’s in case there’s any damage when you get back.

You're obviously aware it was changed in 2019 so that those of us with invisible disabilities can get a BB too? My needs aren't obvious but they're still there

SpringSunshineanddaffodils · 11/04/2025 09:10

Tell those people to fuck off and mind their own business.
It literally is nothing to do with them. You know you're entitled to park there, and you are. It's down to whoever enforces the rules to pull you up on it if necessary.
We once parked in a parent and child parking spot and got pulled up on it. A man loudly and passively aggressively said to his wife "I thought these spots were just for people with children" he obviously assumed we didn't have any because we were in a work van. I revealed my newborn DD tucked up in a moby wrap inside my coat and said "here's my baby actually, so mind your own business next time" but he just walked off and pretended not to hear. I was sleep deprived and passed off so I shouted "excuse me... hello" hut he continued to just ignore
Prick.

Anyway, as I said. Tell them to fuck off. Don't just ignore them. Tell them in no uncertain terms to get to fuck. How dare they impose their stupid self rightous judgement on someone they know nothing about.

Ignorant fucks

WalkingonWheels · 12/04/2025 16:33

Yes they are. I literally know someone who has one for that reason alone.

Deafness can sometimes be enough, you have to be profoundly deaf and usually have related balance issues. Being deaf means car parks can be very dangerous places, hence the blue badge.

PooksBear · 12/04/2025 18:11

@TheOriginalEmu I'm lucky to have no understanding of this so would you mind explaining this to me please? I'm just genuinely curious
My son climbed snowdon the other week and has a blue badge. Mobility issues are not just around physical ability to walk far.
Why would somebody who can do physically challenging things and/or walk far have a blue badge? Is it down to variability or is it more than that?

He has autism, he has no awareness of danger. He’s also 6ft3 and 180lbs, getting him across a busy carpark in one piece can be a 2 person job depending on how intent he is on doing a bunk that day. He climbed snowdon with his disability group where each disabled person has an abled partner (2 in his case) to help them stay safe. He can run all day long, he’s incredibly fit that doesn’t mean he’s not at risk in a car park/on a street.

No one should have to resort to doing that, in a public car park, because they are feeling bullied, and disbelieved. People have no right to demand an explanation because the person with a BB, does not appear disabled enough for them.

Completely agree 100%

WittyBrickCritic · 15/04/2025 18:08

My daughter is 6 and she has one, she also 'doesn't look disabled' however the multiple seizures and tubing to sleep would say otherwise... My favourite comeback is.. you don't look ignorant and yet you seen to be isn't that weird?!
Brings me deep satisfaction.. 👌🏻

I agree.

But then I suspect the person in question took great satisfaction at looking at the face of the BB police and how uncomfortable they then were.

Hopefully they were able to shrug it off, and were not upset by that encounter, and it did not mar their day. Who knows though, and that is the whole point of the discussion, he could have been challenged for the 3rd time that week, because in some one's eyes, they could not 'see' his disability. It seems to be a big problem. There needs to be more awareness of invisible disabilities imo.

kissmyfatass · 16/04/2025 08:12

I am so paranoid about being challenged. My DF is a wheelchair user so I take him to appointments etc. I will literally get him out of the car and then move the car to a non blue badge space because I don’t want to get the grief. I argue with him I don’t need the blue badge space do happy to walk from wherever once he’s safely out of the car. If I’m in a space for blue badge I won’t get out of the car if anyone is around just in case

Does that just not make things more difficult for your Father, when he has to get back into the car? It is not about you, anyone could see that your Father is in a wheelchair.
