Dolly Parton songs make me cry

So much so that I have to turn them off when I'm driving to work. Jolene came on the radio this week, and it got me again. Coat of many colours gets me too. I think she's an amazing woman and artist, but she's maybe too good at getting to the emotions. Anyone else?

Another couple of interesting Dolly facts:

The woman at the bank with flaming locks of auburn hair wasn't actually called Jolene. Jolene was a little girl that Dolly met at one of her shows, she commented that the name was pretty and told the little girl she was going to write a song about her.

Elvis Presley was set to record I Will Always Love You but he wanted 50% of the publishing rights and Dolly wouldn't agree so Elvis didn't record it. She said she was heartbroken because she was a big Elvis fan and was looking forward to meeting him. She has said it was the right decision because the WH version made her enough money that she could have afforded to buy Graceland with the profits.

She's such an amazing artist I'm in awe of her and fascinated by everything about her.

As someone else said I don’t have many idols but she’s one of them. Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is one of my absolute favourites and her version of I will always love you is utterly beautiful. She’s great in her other films even if some of them are very twee!

The last verse of "Down From Dover" is a good test of a mascara.

Indeed, The Bridge is quite stirring too.

Coat of Many Colours breaks me every time. She's a living legend for so many reasons.

IMO there is something fundamentally wrong with you" if you don't like a bit of Dolly".

For me thebine thst makes me cry is the one she does w Brad Paisley"When I get where Im going"

SALaw · 11/04/2025 08:35

I just let the emotions happen. Why turn off?

Eddielizzard · 11/04/2025 08:40

She is incredible. I love her conviction and how she stays true to herself, her generosity and love. Just an exceptional human being.

@Lavender1974 just listened to the episode about Jolene. Really enjoyed. I loved that she just speaks her mind and is so accepting of everyone. Brave lady, especially the way she was willing to challenge the ultra Conservative Christians. Such a sad story linked to the wild flower song from the presenter. Thanks for the recommendation 👍

I love her, she’s one of the few celebrities you never hear anything but good about. We should all be more Dolly!

Beeinalily · 11/04/2025 11:55

I find that reassuring. No-one is all good. If this is her flaw, I can cope with that.

I adore Dolly and I am heartened to see the love on Mumsnet - especially as she is a vocal supporter of trans rights. Love conquers hate ❤

I love the video of her singing live in the bar in Ireland in 1990. She's so personable and down to earth.

I watched that video recently. I wished I’d been there.
She is amazing woman who does help a lot of people without a big song and dance about it
