Dolly Parton songs make me cry

So much so that I have to turn them off when I'm driving to work. Jolene came on the radio this week, and it got me again. Coat of many colours gets me too. I think she's an amazing woman and artist, but she's maybe too good at getting to the emotions. Anyone else?

Love Dolly - I saw her at Glastonbury and bawled when she sang I Will Always Love You. Her original version is so tender.

Pippapotamus · 10/04/2025 21:31

I love her, I don't have many idols but Dolly is definitely one of them. I've been listening to her on Spotify and forgive me if I've I've the name of the song wrong but love is like a butterfly. The way her voice flutters and the chorus goes up and down just how a butterfly would. Amazing song writing

LOVE Dolly.

Absolute queen.

My 12YO DS loves her too now, we sing Islands in the Stream together in the kitchen, he’s Kenny and I’m Dolly

I love Dolly! Letters To Heaven makes me sob, Blackie Kentucky is very sad and I love He's Alive, about Jesus rising from his tomb - I'm not at all religious, but it's so well written.

I love Dolly but I don’t understand why you’d cry and turn it off instead of singing along!

If you heard me singing, you'd be crying! 😆sorry, couldn't resist.

Brilliant actress in Steel Magnolias as well. DD 15 and I quote "Dollyisms" all the time, all said in an over exaggerated southern drawl:

“Laughter through tears is my favourite emotion”

“Honey, there is so much static electricity in here, I pick up everything but boys and money.”

“Honey, time marches on and eventually you realize it is marchin' across your face.”

She is Queen Dolly in our house, amazing woman, years ahead of her time.

harijes · 10/04/2025 21:44

Absolutely adore her in this house.

I would urge any fan to watch her documentaries. She is one hell of a woman. So inspiring.

Balloonhearts · 10/04/2025 21:45

I used to find Jolene sad until I heard her talk about it. She has quite a way with words. 'I got that sucker home and I beat the tar out of him.' I think was how she phrased it. 😂

I still cry at coat of many colours!

Little Andy is another one.

SabreIsMyFave · 10/04/2025 21:47

I agree that Dolly is just magnificent. So talented and gifted, and such a great songwriter, who has produced some heartwrenching songs, and many of them from the heart/from her real life.

Her (original) version of I Will Always Love You is much better than Whitney Houston's verstion. Whitney just shouts - and kills the song IMO. I do love Whitney, don't get me wrong - and she is/was amazing and released some wonderful songs, but I heard Dolly's version of I will Always Love You first, and loved it, and I really didn't like Whitney's cover of it.

HappyGirlNow · 10/04/2025 21:50

Here You Come Again 💕
Love is Like A Butterfly 💕

Love her!

AndrinaAdamosballetshoes · 10/04/2025 21:52

Dolly’s original version of I will always live you is beautiful, I always loved Whitney but much prefer Dolly’s more gentle, heartfelt version, she doesn’t make me cry though, on the other hand Robin Gibb singing “I started a joke” the tears fall!

pilates · 10/04/2025 21:53

Love her 😍
‘If you hadn’t been there’ brings tears to my eyes

MyUmberSeal · 10/04/2025 21:56

An old flame can’t hold a candle to you…
No one can light up the night like you do…

Dolly’s songs are perfection. Just love her.

OnTheBoardwalk · 10/04/2025 21:56

Oh and my love for Dolly made me watch the best little whorehouse in Texas - brilliant and not what’s was expecting

TaylorSwish · 10/04/2025 21:57

I adore her. She’s an icon.

LadeOde · 10/04/2025 21:59

'Me and little Andy', my Dolly Parton favourite of all time. 'I will always love you', second favourite and can't stand the Whitney version.

Lavender1974 · 10/04/2025 21:59

Y’all need to listen to the podcast Dolly Parton’s America. I listen to A LOT of podcasts and this is my favourite ever. It explores her universal appeal and has loads of lovely interviews with her.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/04/2025 21:59

Here You Come Again. I will always love you. Both get me right in the feels.

The woman is a goddess.

Dolly says she loves Whitney’s version because it made her a ton of money! 😆

Ah, brilliant - love a podcast recommendation, especially about someone as fascinating as Dolly. Let's give this a go on the way to work!

Ps I work in the mental health field, so I need to turn up looking relatively calm and not saying to my clients that "its OK, I've just been listening to Dolly"

The last verse of "Down From Dover" is a good test of a mascara.

Happyholidays78 · 10/04/2025 22:27

She is a legend & I do not say that lightly.

DinoLil · 10/04/2025 22:33

Hehehe, I'm just back from a quiz night and a question was who wrote the song I will always love you. I think, I'd lost the plot by then!

Friend said Dolly and I still can't even conjure up the song in my head!
