Would you go away for 2 days if your cat was missing?

Assuming you'd lose a lot of money if you didn't go. And someone was helping search for the cat/leaving out food in those 2 days.

I think I’d be so worried that I wouldn’t enjoy it. It would depend very much on why I was going.

OkPedro · 10/04/2025 17:34

No as pp said I wouldn't be able to relax.
My cat went missing for 24 hours a week before I was due to go on holiday. I would have cancelled if he hadn't come home.

I hope your kitty is back home with you soon 🤞

WickWood · 10/04/2025 17:34

Depends how long the cat has been missing for? Mine went missing start of Feb and I went away start of March for 3 nights.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 10/04/2025 17:35

No. I would not be able to relax at all. My cat got lost once and it was horrendous. No way could I have gone for a holiday while she was missing. I would not have enjoyed it at all.

Mahanii · 10/04/2025 17:35

I went away while my cat was missing. He'd been gone for ages so I couldn't see any benefit to cancelling my trip. I came home and he was waiting outside the house for me!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/04/2025 17:36

I'd struggle to go away if one of my cats was recently missing.

TrixieFatell · 10/04/2025 17:37

I'd go, but I'd be wanting updates frequently

idontunderstandwhy · 10/04/2025 17:37

No but I absolutely wouldn’t want to.

TheArcher · 10/04/2025 17:41

No, I wouldn’t enjoy it and my kids would be distraught. Our cat actually did a disappearing act recently but came back the next day luckily (never stayed out overnight before so was thinking worst case scenarios 🙈) my teenage dd was in bits the whole night.

Bluegreencat · 10/04/2025 17:43

I would, but I’d get a pet or house sitter, in case they turned up at the door!

Beamur · 10/04/2025 17:44

I nearly cancelled a trip because my guinea pig was unwell 😂
But in all honesty I think you have to weigh up if you would enjoy being away and how likely your cat would be to respond to other people?

ChompandaGrazia · 10/04/2025 17:45

If it had only just happened then no, but if it was months ago then yes.

Pigeonqueen · 10/04/2025 17:52

No, I have £2000 cover with pet plan for a missing cat / holiday under the insurance so I’d claim that and stay home. Couldn’t relax or enjoy the break anyway.

bge · 10/04/2025 17:54

Actually I would. Assuming you have a cat flap and could leave out plenty of food. If he came home in the time I was away he could eat etc, and I’d carry on searching when I got back (although the twice my cat has gone missing searching made no difference at all, he strolled back in when he felt like it)

This. I would be really worried and probably wouldn’t enjoy the trip, but would get a pet sitter or neighbour to keep popping and putting food down.

StartAnew · 10/04/2025 18:05

If someone I really trusted was searching for the cat and staying in the house in case he came home, then I might. But I'd be worried and miserable and would not enjoy it. Perhaps it would be a bit different if the cat had form for going AWOL.

Arlanymor · 10/04/2025 18:06

I don’t think I could. I would be far too miserable and feel guilty for attempting to enjoy myself when I could be home looking, putting up posters, etc.

cakeandteaandcake · 10/04/2025 18:07

No, I couldn’t.

Although of course the second you cancel and lose the money is when said cat is likely to swan back in. But I still couldn’t.

We’re with PetPlan so I just logged in to see if we have that cover and FYI it only covers you if your pet goes missing “up to two days before you leave” and hasn’t been found by your scheduled departure. That wording seems horrendously unclear to me - does it mean “within two days of you leaving” or “before the point where it’s two days before you leave” but I’m guessing it’s the first one.

Edit: it is the first one, found a reference to “within two days” elsewhere in the policy. So it won’t cover you if they go missing outside that window. I’d still cancel though in that scenario.

superking · 10/04/2025 18:17

I honestly don't know - one of our cats has disappeared for a couple of nights on a few occasions and although it's worrying she has always turned up so far so I'm not sure I would cancel. We have a cat flap/ friendly neighbours who would keep us posted.

If it had never happened before then perhaps I would cancel - not sure really - it probably wouldn't make any difference to the outcome and if I cancelled and she then reappeared an hour later I'd be gutted.

cramptramp · 10/04/2025 18:19

Yes. If the cat comes home they are unlikely to leave and should still be there on your return.

But what if they’re injured?

faerietales · 10/04/2025 18:22

It depends which cat.

We have three - the middle one often goes walkabout so I wouldn't worry too much about him, but the others rarely leave the gardens near us so if they disappeared I'd be much more worried.

LucastaNoir · 10/04/2025 18:22

Yes I would. I would worry but me being there wouldn’t make the difference between him coming back or not. (I would have someone stay in my home and out food down etc tho)

Ablondiebutagoody · 10/04/2025 18:30

Yep. Cat will come back when it wants to so no point losing out on a holiday
