To think you don’t get out of paying the bill because you don’t drink?

I’m sure this has been done many times before by people in similar scenarios.

I went out for a bit of lunch with two friend’s and one of them brought another friend along that I’ve never met but was nice enough.

However, when it came to the bill, she said ‘’Can we please calculate it all with the alcohol you’ve had separately paid for? Because I only had classical cokes’’

So, we did as she asked. Added up everything but removed the drinks. So 3 of us paid for our drinks in a split, and then did another split for the rest with her and her food and classical colas.

The annoying bit is, she had 3 of them. And they weren’t really much different in price to most of our alcohol.

We all had the same roast and mango cheesecake.

I wouldn’t mind but she kept insisting we all had a dessert so she didn’t feel alone in having one. We’re adults after all but it is a bit annoying

Separate thread to come to see if I would be U to tell my friend not to bring her along again

She also didn’t tip.

Very likely that she (the friend) just worded it clumsily.

But then she proceeded to not tip...which lends credence to the theory that it wasn't a clumsy choice of words and that she is in fact a CF.

corkface · 09/04/2025 21:35

She did pay her bill she just didn't subsidise your drinking. Non drinkers shouldn't have to pay for your alcohol. Well done to her for insisting you split the bill this way.

AthWat · 09/04/2025 21:37

Coconutter24 · 09/04/2025 21:33

Why did no one say we’ll just take all drinks off the bill in that case because they came to nearly as much as the alcohol?

Becuase they didn't think of it at the time, if they had, the thread wouldn't exist. It was only on reflection that the OP realised she'd been intentionally or unintentionally suckered.
I have gained this information by reading her posts.

Why are you so angry on some else's behalf, are you ok?

Muffinmam · 09/04/2025 21:38

ThatHardyWaspAgain · 09/04/2025 20:04

But it’s okay for us to pay for her drinks when it was about £2 difference in total?

You should have split the bill and had her pay for everything she consumed - including her drinks. You stuffed up your calculations. That’s stupidity on your part.

BillyBoe46 · 09/04/2025 21:39

I won't pay for other people booze. I pay for what I consumed. My friends are heavy drinkers and I tend to have 1 coke and then tap water. I can't afford to subsidise other people. In this case she should have paid her 3 cokes plus her meal.

AthWat · 09/04/2025 21:40

JorgyPorgy · 09/04/2025 21:34

I already voted YANBU, and it’s implicit in my comment that is what I think…are you feeling ok Athwat?

It's not at all implicit in your original comment of

"If there’s not much difference in price with the cola and the alcoholic drinks then it seems a bit petty to not just split the bill 3 ways. But where I live alcohol is considerably more expensive than soft drinks and i wouldn’t want to sub someone else’s alcohol bill if I wasn’t drinking or not drinking as much."

that that is what you think, as the OP was not saying she was petty not to split the bill, or that she should have paid other people's drinks bill, just annoyed that she got everyone else to split her cokes - which you don't even mention.

Iceandfire92 · 09/04/2025 21:41

She sounds like a right penny pincher. The sort to chip in "I only had a tap water and a grain of rice" and the sort to run off early to catch the train conveniently before the bill comes in avoiding paying their share of the tip/service charge. I would understand if one person had multiple cocktails and she had water but come on, life is really too short. If there's a few pounds difference, save everyone and the waiting staff the ballache and just split the bill. If you have to quibble over a few quid, perhaps you should prioritise things other than going out.

winter8090 · 09/04/2025 21:41

Often when I go out I order steak or wine and always calculate for what I had and pay that and now all my friends do the same.
No arguing. You eat and drink to your budget and no one else has to pick up the bill.
it seems unfair you had to pick up her drinks. I would have suggested you all just paid for what you had.

The number of people who are utterly missing the point, this late into the thread when that initial misconception has been corrected over and over again, is staggering to me.
It's the lack of comprehension that aggrieves me, not a £2 drinks bill.

Cherrytree86 · 09/04/2025 21:42

Surely no one thinks that this woman’s three copses should be paid for by her fellow diners because they don’t contain alcohol?

I assumed that PP was deliberately taking the piss, since no-one could be that stupid.

Jesus, nobody suggests anyone should. But would you ask them to pay for their drinks and also for a share of your soft drinks?

No I would obviously pay for all of my drinks and my food too. Maybe I misread, sorry.

Classical copses

Delatron · 09/04/2025 21:47

YANBU - you’re talking about a couple of quid. She sounds tight. And people on here are spectacularly missing the point she didn’t even pay for her drinks or tip…

Since there was so little difference you either spit the bill or all just pay for what you have had. But she has got you to subsidise her meal by saying ‘I’m not paying for your booze’. Why should you pay for her 3 cokes?

Specso · 09/04/2025 21:47

I fear ‘classical cola’ might actually catch on after this thread 😆

User79853257976 · 09/04/2025 21:48

The way it was split wasn’t right. It should have been just everyone pay for what they had. You sound judgmental.

Loloj · 09/04/2025 21:48

YANBU - I think a lot of people are not understanding that you ended up paying for her drinks.

Totally fair enough that she didn’t want to pay for your alcohol but she should have paid for her own drinks. You should he just calculated her bit (including the cokes) for her to pay, then split the rest between the alcohol drinkers. She possibly didn’t realise that someone had calculated it incorrectly but otherwise she’s a CF.

constantlylactating · 09/04/2025 21:50

I genuinely hate when people just 'split the bill'. I do drink, but not really if I'm eating, I prefer soft drinks. I also might be on a budget, so I'll be damned if I'm subbing 5 wines Wendy when I've just had a coke.

whycantibeselfishforonce · 09/04/2025 21:50

I'm a non drinker and would absolutely not expect others to pay for my non alcoholic drinks.
You made a mistake splitting the bill - she should have paid for her own drinks, I don't see what difference it makes if they were alcoholic or not - still drinks with a cost and she drank them! She sounds like a cf. Live and learn as pps have said!|

I also read the posts! Maybe OP and her friends should of thought of it at the time 🤷‍♀️ then there’d be no need for the thread.

You’ve tried so hard to write your post well, whilst also trying to be condescending yet you can’t even spell the word because?….

Thestarsinthesky · 09/04/2025 21:51

ThisFluentBiscuit · 09/04/2025 21:53

ThatHardyWaspAgain · 09/04/2025 20:03

Our alcohol total was £12.50 and her cokes all came to £10.12

So it’s okay for us to sub her drinks just because they’re non alcohol?

That's cheap for alcohol! Maybe she just assumed there would be a much bigger difference between alcohol and Coke. I would!
