No quiet holiday locations anymore

3 year old is likely Autistic/ADHD and I’m diagnosed. Where are really quiet holiday locations in the South West? Ideally near a beach. Child can’t cope with busy and loud places and loves being around nature. Somewhere for us to recharge.

It’s so hard to find a quiet seaside town and I crave somewhere peaceful without too much going on and lots of people about. Does a place like this exist??! AIBU to think it doesn’t 😬

We go during term time. Appreciate not everyone can do this but due to dds ASD and other health conditions we do to minimise the impact the travelling etc has on her and she can actually enjoy her holiday. We don’t get fines as in Scotland but also do get permission from school because of her heath conditions.

Treeleaf11 · 08/04/2025 21:13

If you are going in term time it shouldn't be too bad. We went to Croyde last year Thursday to Tuesday term time in June last year and it wasn't too busy

AlertCat · 08/04/2025 21:20

In holiday time, not in the south of the British Isles, I’d say.

Thighdentitycrisis · 08/04/2025 21:24

you could look for somewhere inland not too far from the coast and drive to the beach early or late in the day

Greensaysgo · 08/04/2025 21:27

Go as far south west as you can. The beaches around St Just area are quieter and you can easily walk to get away from people at e.g. sennen cove. Lots of beautiful walks and places to go.

JustMarriedBecca · 08/04/2025 21:29

I'd avoid the South Coast. Take the sleeper train to Scotland and explore the beaches up there. The Lake District is also ideal.
France is also much quieter.

Pigeonqueen · 08/04/2025 21:30

Go in term time. Come to Norfolk - Haven Caister is lovely when it’s quiet and has a beautiful beach.

CheeseWisely · 08/04/2025 21:31

Would you / could you get on a ferry from Poole? The Channel Islands might suit you.

CharlotteCChapel · 08/04/2025 21:32

Westward Ho! is quiet. The caravan park we stayed in Braddicks and they're good quality but don't have a pool or evening entertainment. The beach is huge so there's no problem finding a quiet space.

MotherOfCatBoy · 08/04/2025 21:33

West Wales.. the Gower or Pembrokeshire.

Summerbay23 · 08/04/2025 21:35

Might be a silly question but why the south west? Agree with others, why not try Norfolk, Wales, Northumberland. We’ve had beautiful holidays in all of those places (weather permitting). Definitely worth considering.

ZenNudist · 08/04/2025 21:36

Norfolk has some nice quiet places if you go at the right time.

You could go to Northumberland

Scotland could be good

I recommend the forest of galloway that wouldn't be mobbed

I was there in October a year or two ago- a weekend, but term time- and it was heaving. The whole coast path, all the coves, even the ones you have to practically abseil to, all had people.

Pembrokeshire and the Gower are also not quiet now but super busy, even Lleyn peninsula is incredibly busy and you can’t get away from other people.

If peace and quiet are important you might need to visit an island.

parietal · 08/04/2025 21:39

northumberland.

or if you are bold, the outer hebrides where you will find beautiful beaches of fine golden sand and no other people. it can be warm enough to paddle too.

We hate crowds and have always found it ok when we go. Compared to places like Newquay/Mawgan Porth/Watergate Bay, which are HORRENDOUS in the school holidays. If you arrive at sennen cove at 9am in August the carpark is so quiet, then just walk past the flags to get out of the future crowds... The beach there is huge... A 10 min walk and you can plonk yourself down in your own little spot with no one else around! X

The outer hebrides are just as busy unfortunately! Thanks to influencers and the insta generation. It's a tick list not a holiday and people can be so selfish!

Alnmouth
Northumberland

Ted27 · 08/04/2025 21:48

@hiddensuffering

Is the Isle of Wight a possibility?

I know the Shanklin/Sandown area quite well, lovely beaches, around the pier quite busy but plenty of space further down.

I've been in the height of the summer season for the last 5 years and been able to find quiet places. Lots of nice walks

whengodwasarabbit1 · 08/04/2025 21:52

If you want cornwall and dont mind walking, stay in one of the villages inland and find a beach off the beaten track that you have to walk to from the coast path. Would recommend staying somewhere like St Teath (tregardock beach) or Marshgate/Jacobtow (strangles beach) . There are lots of hidden quiet beaches if you don't mind a 15 minute walk.

Ddakji · 08/04/2025 21:57

South south-west is quieter than the north.

TheLette · 08/04/2025 22:17

A few years ago I went to Broadstairs in the very last week of the August summer holidays. It was pretty quiet there. Too quiet for me personally!

soupyspoon · 08/04/2025 22:25

Are you in the south west or wanting to travel to it?

I find its overrated, traffic is terrible and its very very busy

Wales, Cumbria, Northumberland, all beautiful and quiet. Parts of east Anglia too.

Ive just booked Northumberland for July. I cannot wait

Crunched · 08/04/2025 22:35

You can always find a quiet beach in the Isles of Scilly whatever the month.

Ablondiebutagoody · 08/04/2025 22:52

Pembrokeshire. North Cornwall type scenery but extremely quiet. Beautiful, uncrowded beaches like Freshwater West or Whitesands or many others.

DuckBushCityLimit · 08/04/2025 22:55

I was looking at Lundy island recently - looks idyllic! Might already be booked up for this summer, tho.
