No quiet holiday locations anymore

3 year old is likely Autistic/ADHD and I’m diagnosed. Where are really quiet holiday locations in the South West? Ideally near a beach. Child can’t cope with busy and loud places and loves being around nature. Somewhere for us to recharge.

It’s so hard to find a quiet seaside town and I crave somewhere peaceful without too much going on and lots of people about. Does a place like this exist??! AIBU to think it doesn’t 😬

The Lizard peninsula in Cornwall is quiet in our experience. Avoid Kynance Cove which is insanely popular. We find Bude relatively calm as well. Pembrokeshire particularly the middle and north coasts. Avoid Tenby and Saundersfoot and you should be OK.

Another vote for Pembrokeshire, even in school holidays either go to quieter beaches or if you can, walk along the beach until you get to space if possible - will probably have to carry DC though. We've done this since DC were young as none of us can stand being beach mat to beach mat with others.
One year we stayed in this amazing farmhouse with huge grounds, just us, so peaceful - I haven't been able to find it again on holiday websites again since though - something like that would fit the bill

Scottish beaches are always quiet when I’ve been, even during the school holidays.

LillyPJ · 09/04/2025 00:24

Yes, quiet places exist - but maybe they're quiet for a reason. If they are lovely places, perhaps they are difficult to get to? Maybe they don't have the kinds of facilities (public loos, cafes, shops, beaches...) that lots of people want.

Geneticsbunny · 09/04/2025 08:37

You can always find a quiet beach if you are happy and are able to walk a bit. Just look on Google maps for a sandy bit, away from a town and find a footpath to walk to it. We have found the most amazing beaches like this. Obviously check tide times and be aware of being cut off and take a mobile incase of emergency.

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 09/04/2025 08:42

Another vote for Northumberland

DuckBee · 09/04/2025 08:47

We go to quiet places but that’s because we don’t go to typical child places with fairgrounds and loud noises. Our holidays are very simple and we entertain ourselves.

CrickityCrickets · 09/04/2025 08:48

Try west Wales, much quieter and not that much further than Devon/Cornwall if you are in Southern England.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/04/2025 08:51

Northumberland. Huge, long beaches - you can always find a quiet spot.

budgiegirl · 09/04/2025 09:19

The Gower. Huge beaches, small towns and villages to rent cottages etc, or campsites if that's your thing, we found it to be very quiet even in peak season. And there's always the Mumbles ( a bit busier ) if you want typical seaside entertainment - crazy golf, arcades etc.

Canterranter · 09/04/2025 09:21

I would rent self-catering, a place with a nice big garden and in the countryside for walks and playing. Then you have control over having quiet surroundings. If there's beach in driving distance you can at least go and leave if it's too busy.

BestIsWest · 09/04/2025 09:25

The Gower is very busy these days.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/04/2025 09:31

I know of plenty of quiet beaches in the south west. The sea may be too steeply shelving for a small child though.

i know of a couple of lovely safe sandy ones too but wouldn’t want to announce them on here or half of London will be there this summer!

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/04/2025 09:33

Carhaeys beach is always surprisingly quiet.

bumblingbovine49 · 09/04/2025 09:34

North Wales in Penbrokeshire . Also possibly as far North in Scotland as you can afford the time to travel to. You need to get as far away from the South coast. Very far west in Cornwall also a possibility

In term time you are more likely to find peaceful relatively uncrowded beaches nearer the South of the country. In school holidays it is very difficult

Hannahthepink · 09/04/2025 10:15

Seaside towns with beaches are always going to be busy in the summer, but there are quieter parts of most towns and quiet beaches away from the main beaches. I grew up in a seaside resort and live in another one now, both in the south west, and we rarely go to the ‘busy’ bits in the summer, there are plenty of spots to go to avoid the big crowds. Perhaps if you have an idea of what area you fancy, people can give you specific ideas?

That’s a big ask in the summer or during school holidays!
Better to use term time or Spring/Autumn opportunities if you can.

MotherOfCatBoy · 08/04/2025 21:33

West Wales.. the Gower or Pembrokeshire.

I agree. A remote cabin will give you what you need.

hiddensuffering · 09/04/2025 11:03

Thanks for all the suggestions! I mean during term time of course, I wouldn’t attempt braving the school holiday chaos!!

Hannahthepink · 09/04/2025 11:12

In term time during the week I honestly think that you can take your pick really. You can sit on Weymouth beach in term time and practically have the place to yourself.

ItGhoul · 09/04/2025 11:34

Like others have said - if you're not too bothered about the weather, then the north west coast of Scotland or Northumberland might be a better option.

Judecb · 09/04/2025 17:54

I find Pembrokeshire to be quieter than Cornwall and there are plenty of beautiful beaches.

Agreed

BG2015 · 09/04/2025 17:57

Northumberland

jeaux90 · 09/04/2025 18:14

Woolacombe it’s a massive beach so no reason to be near other people and during term time it’s ok. We went there beginning of July last year, it wasn’t too busy at all.
