Some say 3-6 months’ expenses, others aim for a year or more. What’s actually realistic?

OP posts:
Flutterbyby · 08/04/2025 19:02

Wouldn't call it an emergency fund but it's about 50k.

2025Hackathon · 08/04/2025 19:06

6 months but working on a year’s expenses.

Ideally, there would be a separate rainy day or emergency fund outside run of the mill living expenses.

DrCoconut · 08/04/2025 19:07

COL and a series of expenses means there's under £200 at the moment. I know others will be even worse off and I'm lucky to have any savings.

SaladSandwichesForTea · 08/04/2025 19:07

2k.

We have access to 4k on the credit card and overpay the mortgage 1k a month so we would have access to money and have a good reserve of overpaid mortgage (which would let us take a mortgage holiday for up to a year)

The chances of us both losing work at the same time is low.

And I'll get flamed but I don't want so much in savings that I wouldn't be eligible for government support if I needed it.

Notsuchafattynow · 08/04/2025 19:08

I follow Dave Ramsey.

£1000 for emergencies in high street banks
£6 months longer term savings (isa) incase of redundancy etc

emmetgirl · 08/04/2025 19:09

What emergency fund?

apricotdreams · 08/04/2025 19:10

zero ☹️

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 08/04/2025 19:10

About 6 months worth of living as I do now, if I cut back all the niceties and whatnot maybe 12 months. I have a separate fund for boiler going kaput etc that would just about cover the cost of an immediate replacement.

I’ve worked really hard on my credit score too so have multiple credit cards with decent 0% APR deals on them. Could definitely use them if needed.

Cloudysky81 · 08/04/2025 19:11

Enough to cover two years of mortgage payments and bills.
If a disaster were to happen that should give enough time.

TomatoSandwiches · 08/04/2025 19:15

We have a years expenses if necessary.

NovemberMorn · 08/04/2025 19:18

Between 3 and 5 k.
I have access to money if a big totally unexpected emergency crops up, but the amount shown is what I call my instant emergency money.
I wouldn't feel happy without it to hand.

Moveoverdarlin · 08/04/2025 19:18

20k

MerryGrimaceShake · 08/04/2025 19:20

You guys have emergency funds? 😂

Being serious, I managed to get to 3k once. Then my rent, bills and the cost of living all went up and poof - gone.

We are trying to build it up again but some BS seems to happen every month or so at the moment!!!!

Mamabear487 · 08/04/2025 19:22

I don’t have one but I do have 2 credit cards for emergencies and larger purchases that get paid off in full when used

REDB99 · 08/04/2025 19:24

Two years of mortgage and bills plus food etc, more if I massively cut back.

LividBoo · 08/04/2025 19:26

Also doing Dave Ramsey.

So £1k for now, to be built up to six months once I'm fully out of debt. Genuinely life changing for me.

edwinbear · 08/04/2025 19:26

Not as much as I had pre Trumps tariffs….but it’s still about 5 years worth. DH and I both work in a really insecure sector, he was out of work 2 years last time he was made redundant and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if one, or both of us, was made redundant by the end of the year. I still worry it’s not enough, which is ridiculous really.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 08/04/2025 19:30

£500. Would like to get to 3-6 months living expenses but never managed to get there.

Lilly11a · 08/04/2025 19:30

At the moment 3 months wages which is 4 months expenditure roughly

Tangled123 · 08/04/2025 19:31

I put enough in savings pots to cover all my annual bills, like rates, car insurance etc. I also have credit cards with a higher limit than I really need to cover any other emergency that might crop up.

CoralOP · 08/04/2025 19:32

This made me chuckle, just read the thread from the lady saying typical mums netters were all rich and she didnt feel like she fit in, a lot disagreed.
Flicked to this post about emergency savings and first reply was 50k 😀

To be fair I do have savings but mostly due to an inheritance.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/04/2025 19:35

Not enough, bloody washing machine decided to breakdown today 😔

Orangemintcream · 08/04/2025 19:43

6 months salary. More if I can.

DoAWheelie · 08/04/2025 19:45

I had £3k which was enough to (mostly) cover rent and utilities for 3 months, but then I had to pay for two funerals in 8 weeks which threw me into debt and I've not recovered yet a year later.

CakeIsNotAvailable · 08/04/2025 19:52

We have around £23k, which would cover our essential bills for about 12 months. We used to have more, but paid off our mortgage last autumn and that reduced our savings a lot. We are managing to save £1-2k a month at the moment, though, which is reassuring.
