WWYD hit a parked car

I reversed into a car in a train station. Took reg details and photo of damage and informed my insurance. Damage is minimal (photo proof). I didn’t have anything to hand to write a note. Would you just forget about it and see what happens and would you worry about it. What would you have done differently? I do feel awful about this and hate that I’ve done this

I’ve driven into a stationary, empty, car once, drove off quickly without thinking then later that day called the police to fess up. They took down the details including the reg of the car.
nothing came of it, it was several years ago. It was a pretty old and bashed car though so I’m guessing the owners never reported themselves.

yes I was wrong just to drive off but I realised my mistake and did what I could to make it right

these days I’d perhaps put a message on local Facebook but I’d be wary as people can be horrid on there

Hoppinggreen · 08/04/2025 14:31

DD did this not long after passing her test and just left and came home in a panic (I know this was wrong and so does she now). We went back but the car was gone
THEN we got a call on our home phone from a Police Officer as there had been a witness who took a note of her number plate.
We sorted it all out and paid for repairs but don't think that driving off means you get away with it

Incorrect.

I wasn't talking about the strict legalities, I was talking about the reality, which is that the police aren't interested, just as they aren't interested in lots of other "minor" crimes, etc.

Crazybaby123 · 08/04/2025 14:33

Leave a note. Imagine if it was your car.
Someine actually did this to my car in a train car park and it was a huge dent that cost us quite a bit to fix.

Honestly, driven off as quick as possible!

Are you the person who drove into my car at Harrogate Hospital? You caused £5kk damage. Take responsibility for your actions.

As I said above, we got a phone call from a Police Officer when DD hit someones car and didn't leave a note.
He was VERY interested

Are you for real? 😡

pukekokekup · 08/04/2025 15:01

I had the same situation recently. I took some photos of the damage (cosmetic) and waited there for a bit then decided to go and borrow a pen and paper from the nearest shop so I could leave a message. Luckily the driver came back at this point so I told her what happened, we exchanged the numbers. I apologised to her quite a few times because I had never damaged other peoples cars before and felt awful. The lady was very kind and even gave me hug. I called my insurer once I went back home and they took care from there. Someone damaged my work car years ago and ran away. Worked paid for the repair but I remember how upset I was. I would never do this to anyone.

RenoDakota · 08/04/2025 15:03

This has happened to me before. Reversed into a low sports car in the dark and pissing rain. Had nothing to write on to leave a note and was also desperate for a pee so nipped home, a couple of minutes away, got pen and paper and went back and left a note. Was all sorted out by the insurance. Knew I had done absolutely the right thing.

Leaving the scene of an accident is easy to prove and prosecute. They will be very interested. It’s an easy win.

Hope that happens to you one day. Vile.

Goldbar · 08/04/2025 15:35

I didn't think you always had to report to the police if there were no injuries, only if you were unable to exchange details.

Essentially, OP, the other driver's insurance needs a way of contacting your insurance. So you need to leave your details (number/number plate etc.), however you manage it, so they can do this and you don't look like you've done a runner.

You're one of those.

DiscoBeat · 08/04/2025 16:05

I would definitely find a pen and paper from somewhere and leave details.

Challengedbutenlightened · 08/04/2025 14:14

Thanks everyone. My insurers assured me I had done all the right things-they know I hadnt reported it to the police. I have now reported it online with 101. The train station is a bit of a weird one. Last time I was there a vehicles hand brake had failed (same area as well) and staff couldn’t do anything about it. There was a lot of cars damaged and in a CTV black spot. I will grab some paper from the hospital and see if the car is still there when I get back and leave a note

If it's a route you take often, you may see the car again, so I'd carry a note in the car, just in case. In the meantime you've done all you can and, quite honestly, you've done a hell of a lot more than most people would do.

There's every chance that if it's that minor, the owner wouldn't otherwise notice for a long time, if at all.

Some people find your attitude despicable and in my opinion quite rightly so.

Itsmeeeeeee · 08/04/2025 16:50

Nothing more, like the police are interested. 😂

No one with a sense of humour on tonight?

All clutching your pears and polishing your halo's?

What exactly is humourous about damaging someone's car and then driving off leaving them with the bill?

Yes but we cannot say that can we, because this is MN and everyone is beyond reproach!

EilishMcCandlish · 08/04/2025 18:44

I failed to put my parking brake on properly and rolled across an airport car park once, clipping the car in the bay opposite while in a new parent just back to work sleep deprived state. I left my name and number on the windscreen. When the owner got back from their holiday a week later, they were very grateful for my honesty. I preferred the clean conscience approach.
